On Thursday the thermometer stood at 6 in the shade, in this city. - "We have been requested to say that a Vacancy has occurred in the music class of prof. L-YTe invite all who wish to be correct, in this fast age, with regard to time, to the card of Mr. Highfield, in our advertising columns. Ills time is always right and can be bad on very moderate conditions. Manufacturers and dealers in leather should patronize the MiKvaukie establish ment of Mr. Thomas Armstrong. Ilis leather is equal in all respects, if not su perior, to any other quality in the State. Try Lis. See advertisement. J. E. Walsh recently committed to the avium at East Portland, has passed an examination before the faculty in charge of that institution and been discharged, as O restored, and able to attend to his busi ness, which he resumed in this city on Thuxsday hist. Capt. Keliey of the Nevada, in the North American Steamship Co.'sline. will sail from San Francisco on the 5th of Au gust next, connecting with the Sir. San tufcjo for New York. The fine ship Oreao nin will sail on the 20th of August, and the Nevada on September 5th. O Our city has worn a sad appearance for the last week in consequence of the death of two adults and three children in this vicinity. The diseases were not contagious. but death in every instance was sudden. The general health of the community is good, if we except the numerous instances of whooping cough, and in this respect very great improvement may now be noted. The P. T. Co.'s new steamer Altjany. Capt. Miller, made her first trip to Salem on Monday last running up from here in nine hours and ten minutes. She over took the Echo aground, on the voyage, lightened her and passed over the same eUoul vithout hindrance. On her arrival at Albany there was great rejoicing among the people who are highly pleased with their towns namesake. We think the name a very fitting one. and much more ap propriate than personal. All pretty steamers outfit to be named after the pretty valleys and towns, we say. 0 Heath, the great proprietor of all, (Sjteems to have made imperative demands upon other friends throughout the State. Among the losses in Portland we observe that Hon. J. N. Dwlph, Capt. Higgins. and others have had taken from them tender bjs of affection. Who knows our sad hearts anguish The deep distressing pain. When we see that we must render Our little jewels twain? " It has been currently reported on the streets for some time that the Democrats of Oregon City have purchased a flag The fl tg of our Union. 0 The red white and white and blue.' On Thursday, at noon, there was seen fly ing from the mast, the ' Stars and Stripes" ---Some said that it was the Democratic I fl. isr but on viewing it from our office d.ior we pronounced the supposition un q true, as the flag showed evidences of for mer service and no Democratic flag, in this age. bears any such indications unless it came from Seeessia. The real facts about the flag which was flung to the breeze on Thursday are these : The 14th amendment to the Constitution has been adopted and officially proclaimed to the T ople: and Union men here felt like re citing over it a little. e?We have seen no finer potatoes, in any country, than those raised by Mr. Wm. Ilronghton of this city, in his garden about one half mile east and a quarter above Main street.ccording to analytical trigo nometry. Ttiis proves to us that while Mr. Broughton has an elevated place for his residence, it is noi alone for its beauty that he admires it, but that it can be made productive as well, thus combining the useful with the ornamental. Very many persons suppose that the hills : bo .t us are not productive. This is a grave error. We urge that no hill is so high, no vale so low, but thawealfh can bo produced from them in our State. We have samples ot timothy grass in our office, measuring six feet in length, which grew on clay land. w ned by Mr. Wm. 15. Partlow of this city. hat better evidences than these do we need to orove that labor finds -its reward here ? Thh and Tua9. On Wednesday last passengers reached Una city ten hours from thjj Dalles. This we consider is pretty good time. The distance by wafer fronriiere to Dalles City is about 135 miles. The passage requires three steam rs and one railroad, to complete the con tract. Of these the P. T. Company furnish the Senator, a packet of 150 tons, worth at le ist $20,000 ; the O. S. X. Co. supply the 11 iison G. llant, a fine Xorth river side wbeel steamer, valued at about 70,000, and having a carrying capacity for about 1.000 tons. This steamer, under command of Captain John Wolfe, plys regularly be tween Portland and the Cascades, where the passenger is landed and conveyed across the portage on a train of cars drawn y a veritable locomotive of Eastern w knianship.over regularly laid iron rails, for a dis'ance of six or eight miles. Thence J-1" go on board another floating palace, of which we know but little in these lat Ur days, except that Geo. Knaggs Esq., acts as Purser. Py ix o'clock F. M., you Ou sup at tie Uxnatiila House, in Dalles ci;J, or take cars again for Celtic, 13 miles ver a splendid railroad. Xext you arc at liberty to pursue jour way on to the States, or just where you please. At pre ent travel to Chicago is easy in from thirteen to fifteen days by the Boise City rote. connecting with cars of the U. P. It. qR- at Laramie. By the more northern route the time is a little greater, but 20 'lays is sufficient for an ordinary traveler to reach St. Paul in, from Oregon City. The that part of our item is brief. In 1802 tt writer left St. Paul May 15th, and landed in Portland on the 29th of October --five months and 14 days. A friend, at ir elbow came out a few vears earlier, and tvaj.tr HveJcs in making the voyago .''' ''"y fc-i-v miV-,, hy ..?-. ' On Monday last Messrs. Wm. Barlow and Geo. A. It will un doubtedly be the best book issued upon that subject Messrs. Francis. Dewev & Co.. of San Francisco, are agents for this coast. On Tuesday evening next a concert and exhibition, comprising select music, charades, tableau vivants, etc., will be given at Washington Hall in this city for the benefit of the Baptist Sabbath School library, by citizens of Oregon City. L. II. Lewis Esq. and brother.of Port land, passed on to their homes last Tues day, after an absence of some days in the valley. They traveled south through Washington and Yamhill counties, thence north by the route through Albany, Salem. Aurora, etc. They report the roads in good condition everywhere they have been, except in Clackamas county. Information is wanted of the where abouts of Joseph Alexander, who resided at Butte creek, in this county, for some two years, and left there about three years ago. stating that he was going out into the Cascade mountains. lie was about 50 years of age. medium stature, anfi showed evidences of insanity. Address information io Joseph P. Eagon, Belpassi, Oregon. State papers copy. Mr. II. L. Kelly is making an opening in the brush upon the bluff for anew resi dence. He has a fine location, and we predict that in less than two years will be surrounded by neighbors. Property on the bluff is valuable for residences, and is commanding considerable attention not so much among speculators as the perma nent class of settlers. We understand that Mr. Harvey sells very reasonably to persons who wisli to build. Monday's Evening Commercial con tains a statement from Wm. W. Skinner, formerly of St. Joseph co., Indiana, upon the East side railroad. We have never passed over the entire line of the grade between East Portland and Matlock's, but can say on the representation of a much abler man than either Mr. Skinner or our self, an old resident of Oregon and a prac tical thinker, that while there are some facts in the statement as published, they are all. in the main, exaggerated. Old Taminv. A prominent Democrat of this county objected to the nominations of the Xew York Convention, because it was ruled by Wall street gold. lie at tributes it all to August Belmont, and " Old Tam.my Hall." He says he knew them both in New York, and they are un scrupulous tricksters, particularly Old Tamany. lie thinks he ought to stick to stocks, and let politics alone. We hope " Old Tamany :' will make a note of this. On Wednesday last, the Active Base Ball club of Portland came up to Oregon City, to play the third and last game of a match with the Young Grants of this? place, and to be beaten again by the latter. Af ter our boys did the job up for them as the baso-ballists in our city do those things of late, the Actives returned to Portland as happy, we suppose, as could be expect ed under the circumstances; they having lost the ball by six runs. On Monday previous the 2d nine of the Athletics of Portland, were beaten in this city by the Champions of this place, 27 runs the score standing 77 to 50. On Wednesday last another painful accident befel master llichard Roberts' at the woolen factory in this city, resulting in the breaking of his left lower limb, just above the ankle. It occurred while in the act of casting a belt off from a pulley of a second breaker in the card room. He placed his knee against the belt, When his overalls were pressed between the pulley-wheel and belt, throwing hitn over the wheel. It is a sad accident, and adds an other item to the list of unfortunate events which have befallen Mr. Roberts' family within the past year. Mr. J. N. Iloag. Secretary of the Cali fornia State Agricultural Society, has our tl anks for favors. The next fair of the Society will be held at Sacramento, begin ning on the loth and ending on the 2oth of September. Exhibito:s from Oregon will be granted all the privileges that can be asked, to compete with California. We suggest that it would be well for our woolen mills, iron works, and manufac turers generally flouring mills especially to bo in attendance at Sacramento. This County can compete with California in lumber, lime, cement, iron and coal, and the State can discount her on grain. Mr. X. P. Perine, of San Francisco, called upon us on Friday of last week, but five days out from home. He came overland, by the coaches of the Oregon and California Company, was but little fatigued, and says he has now to own vp that our State, with its beautiful, exten sive, and fertile Rogue's River Valley. Umpqua valley and Wallamet valley, ex cels all of California. He returned to California by the steamer of Wednesday, and by Saturday night (Providence per mitting) will be at home again, having passed but two weeks abroad and seen more, in that time, than he ever knew in all his life before, respecting this glorious country. According to an article in the Ore gonietn of last Wednesday, concerning the work upon the West side grade, we can not sec that that company have so very much to brag of. Mr. W. W. Skinner's re port concerning the work on the East side, is no doubt of a one-sided nature. We believe Mr. S. is an employee of the West side company, and his statements ought to be taken with some grains of allowance. The Orerjonian says the force employed on the West side road averages about 100 men. On Thursday last 140, including the Chinese, were at work on the East side between this city and Portland, as we are informed by one who was there. In addition to taose there is a force employed in nnfnn pnnntr. Tn to this date about ... - j - - - . . Dear Sirs, I ought to have acknowledged long ago tho box of Pain Killer you had the goodness to send me last year. Its coming was most providential. I believe hundreds of lives were saved, under (rod, by it. The Cholera appeared here soon after we receiv ed it. We resorted at once to the Pain Killer, using as directed for Cholera. A list was kept of ail to whom the Pain Killer was given, and our native assistants assured us that es;ht out of eveiy ten to whom it was prescribed, recovered. It has. too, been very ustful in various other diseases. It has proved an incalculable blessintr to multitudes of poor people throughout all this region. I Our native preachers are never willing 'to :o J out on their excursions without a snpplv of f trie Pain Killer: It gives them favor in the eyes of the people, and access to families and localities by whom otherwise they would be very indifferently received.
