The day is cold, and dark, and dreary ; It rains, and the wind is never weary ; The vine still to the mouldering wall. Lut at every Jrhst tli dead leaves fall, And the day is dark and dreary. Jfy life is cold, and dark, and dreary ; It rains, and the wind is never weary ; Jfy thoughts still cling to the mouldering Tast, B Hut the hopes of youth fall thick in the blast. And the days are dark and dreary. e He stillsad heart! and cease repining ; Lehiml $e clouds is the sun still shining : Thy fate is the common fate of all, Into each life some rain must tall, Some day must be dark and dreary. Enterprise follows the path marked by reflection to profitable dis coveries, and industry, guided by in iutelligence, reaps its appropriate re ward. E iith is bountiful to all her children, but bestows her choicest fa vers on the most dutiful. In what ever occupation men engage thy must drawthcir sustenance, from the bosom if the common mother, and thus all he pursuits of life depend for existence upon .Agriculture. It is one of the strangest anomalies in his- tory Lnat a calling thus paramount and all controlling, should have re - inained throng sixty centuries ne glected and ill understood, while more (D fimple and exact, though infinitely less important arts, were ages ago brought to a degree of perfection that modern skill ma- not hope to sur pass. But though the idea of im provement in Agriculture and agricul tural implements is less than a hun dred years old, very young in the presence of the centuries, its progress and its results would be incredible were they not so well authenticated. No sculptor of this age expects to ri vol the wo! ks of the chisel of Phidias, stained and marred during the lapse of twenty-four hundred years; and even our boasted "sun-pictures" would appear lifeless and inaccurate compared with the inimitable crea tions t f the pencil of Protoques ; but the most ignorant of our, lately eman cipated fffcdmcn would cast aside as useless the clumsy spade with which Cato, the censer, fuffowed his little farm, and the least enlightened con., servative in modern agriculture would convert into fuel the wooden plough oftfTriptoIcrous, the mythical "Thrice Plonghcr'7 of the ancient Greeks, who with this implement, won the favor of Ceres, and was permitted to fly through the air liiQthe dragon-drawn chariot of the fabled Goddess, amrdi-tribute corn throughout the earth. Yot the first, iron plough used in the United States was patented in 17C3. often, especially after heavy rains, mcei with watsr which is not lit to drink. There is a well known way cf purifying it, which simply consists in putting in from two to three ten-thousandth parts of alum, about two grains per pound. This will cause all the extraneous animal matter to coagulate and sink to the bottom. Yet very few have recourse to tls simple method, probably be cause they tire afraid ot drinking nl uin-watcr; but they do r.ot consider that the ;dttm is decomposed by the mere fact of its exercising a chemic al $ i lbier.ee. Tl g'jory says he always respects o.d ;ige except w hen some one cheats l;im with a p;ir of touh chicken?. Ever since the period of the ap pearance of the potatoe rot in this country, farmers have been studying, more or less closely, the potatoe crop, and we believe we speak within the bounds of truth in saying-, that all who have had the best opportunity to judge, have decided that the appli cation of mineral manures will give the best result, and the use of strong horse, or other fermenting manures, the poorest return. Especially does this prove true in seasons when rot is most prevalent. In New Jersey, the green sand mare used lavishly, supplies oil the mineral elements. In other localities, where this cannot be obtained, ashes, lime, piaster and superphosphate of lime are employed with certainty, when properly ap plied in sufficient quantity. All strong soils yield a better crop of potatoes when plowed, and complete ly pulverized in autumn, and we sup pose this to bo mainly due to the elimination of the mineral elements, consequent on the comminution cf the soil, and its exposure to atmos pheric influences during winter. In the spring the more thoroughly' the ground is again plowed the better for the crop. a- In Denmaik, two dairies of Ayr shire cows give the annual milk pro duce per cow at G50 and G32 gallons respectively. Three returns of d liries consisting wholly of Short horns, show a produce of five hundred and forty gallons, six hundred and thirty gal lons, and seven hundred and sixtyfivc gallons respectively, or an average of G25 gallons per annum for each cow. fn two dairies, where half-bred Short Horns were kept, the yield was 810 and 866 gallons respectively for each cow. , -o- The interest exhibited by Phila delphia in her public parks, has wak ed up the Dostonese. A recent pnp r in lloveifs Magizine says that Eos ton has been entirely outranked by other cities; and after deriding the "beautiful common and the public garden, "deads that something should be done to ''fully redeem cur former foremost rank in respect, to public ground?." The cool weather of ant um is the most favorable season of the year fir making butter, and it should be the aim of every farmer or dairyman to produce the besi possible article for mar ket purposes. There is no disguising the fact that, with good cows, ample feed and much experience iu butter making, many persons succeed in making a villainous compound of grease, milk and hair, des ignated 1 y name but no legitimate relation ship to it. Much of" the butter of com merce is of this character a fact for which there is no excuse. Clean milking, clean pails, (satis, crocks and churns are the first reipii.iits to the production of a good arti cle of butter. This every body knows without being informed of it, but the trouble is. the practice is not up with the information possessed. Here is where re form, iu many cases, should commence followed by a kindred amendment of con verting the cream into butter. It the but termilk is not thoroughly worked out, a good ai tiele cannot be produced; if the salt used is foul, of poor quafty and inju diciously applied, too much or too little, the. butter will not be of good quality, nor command a top price iu the market. Well, health failing, as a last resort, the doc tors sent us to Minnesota. The winter was intensely cold, and a terrible form of Neural gia prevailed among the settlers, and we fell into the grasp ot" the disease, and day and night, for weeks, endured untold agony. Many remedies were tried without avail. One day. however, a stalwart frontiersman entered the room, bearing in his hand a vial partly tilled with a reddish liquid. It was some of the Taix Killer. lie had bought it iu California three years before, and had kept it with miserly care until then. A pph ing it .externally and internally cave immediate relief. Since then, we have rec ommended it successfully in c.ises that baf 11 ed the best medical skill; and when we see persons reject this remedy, we recall our own expel ience, and think that the time may come when pain, incurable by other agents, may teach them the value of this great discover-.
