Editok Enterprise : At a meeting of the Union voters of Oswego precinct, on Feb. 20lh, a Grant Club was organized by ihe flection of D. P. Trullinger, PresU dent; C. W. Bryant, E.G. Ingalls, nnd George Walling, Vice Presi dents; L. II. Calkins, Secretary; Le roy T. Shipley, Corresponding Sec retary; II. W, Shipley, E. G. Ingalls nnd G- Walling, Executive Commit tee, and E. G. Ingalls, Treasurer. We opened with a long list of good Union Republican?, who will do their whole duty in the coming campaign os true lovers of their whole country, iiut.tain the principles of the Union party: and help to elect U. S. Grant l'resident. L. II. Calkin. Sec'y. The exhibition of Silverton Col lege, which took place on Saturday, March 7th, 1SG8, was a very brilliant affair. The house was crowded by the friends and relatives of the pupils, nnd the various exercises were gone through with in a very creditable tnanner. Among those who dialing uished themselves particularly, we Inay mention: Misses Eliza Hayes, Frankie A. Dunbar, Annie Rawlins, Mary Samson, Edna Eastham, Viola Davis, Susan Dudley, Mary Bruce, Ada Wolfoid, and Mary Stephens, and of the (ients, W. W. II. Sam son, E. P. Smith, Oliver Wolford, Frederick Masches, J. Rigdon, La- feyette & Charles Daris, Jackson & John White. Of W. W. II Sam K'on it can be said, that one of his winning smiles or winks is all that is Necessary to create laughter. Ou the whole it was the best display of talent we have had the pleaf'ure of w itnessing for some time. - All over thu valley of the Wil lamette, the p'eophj are uttering com plaints about the want of tonnage bctAcen Portland and San Francisco. Every dealer who comes here speaks vf it as a hardship upon the Slate, rtnd scarcely a newspaper of the in terior but mentions the matter in some way, at almost every issue. Vhe Record, after saying that large Amounts of grain nnd Hour are wait ing fill along tho river lor Ehipment. ndds: " Everything seems wailing for tonnage at Portland, to carry off the freight that has accumulated there beyond thts capacity of shipping to knove it immediately. If Portland vants to be the Emporium, as it seems destiircd to be, its merchants should be up and doing, and not let the business of the country wait its slow motions. Get ships to "carry off ou r"p reduce, if you want to have it to handle.1' The Record's hints to Port land business trien about being " up and doing" and " get ships," etc., should be heeded. says the Oregonian. Maj. Thomas Charman, of Char Yn.m k Dro., leaves by the steamer to day for San Francisco, to make the purchases for their Spring trade-. As usual it is in contemplation to buy largely, of the best goods that cau be Mr. J. II. Lariibcrt, of Milwau kie, informs the Oregonian that Hon. W. C. Johnson of Oregon City, will address the Grant Club at Mihvau. kie, on Saturday, the 2ist iust., at 10 o'clock A. M., when everybody, and particularly the Democrats, are invited to attend. , On Friday evening last a supper, and pleasant sociable, given by the ladies of Oregon City, netted a hand some sum fur the benefit of Rev. W. I. Cosper, of the M. E. Church. Circuit Court, Judge W. W. Upton, is still in session. A large number of important suits have been, nnd are being tried, report of which we t,hall endeavor to obtain for our next issue, r. J. W. Lewis, of this city, in making gang plows is engaged from an Eistcrn patent, which is said to be a very expeditious and cconom ical pattern, Some persou is writing for the Olympia papers, "Incidents and An nals of the Settlement" of that place. Why cannot some early settler favor us with a series of papers on the sub ject, relating to this the first Oregon settlement? Mr. Frank McCann of Portland, who comes to us well recommended, proposes soon to start a dancinjr class in this city. Perhaps on Friday evening next, at the Court House, the first will be held. - Some men claim a preference for steam, over water power, all things being even. We want to know what constitutes the advantage. A concert of choice music is in prospect for our citizens, in a few days the time and place will be an nounced In due time. SEW YORK SWIXDLERS. We received the following circular by the last eastern mail, purporting to come from an honest firm bnBro.icU way, N. Y. City. We shall suppress their names for the present as they have given us no attestable proof of their own integrity, leaving us to in fer that they are as deep dyed swind lers as those whom they would have the public trust them in making "col lections' from I Office of Atiornriis a Counseturs. ) New- York. Feb. lsth. 1SCS. j Messrs Editors : Enclosed we hand you our circular, which, to forward the ends of justice, and give to your patrons an op portunity of Raining their just dues, we wish you to'give three or four insertions in your journal, at the same time adding any local ideas of your own, to forward this work. If impossible for vou to insert this as news snrl tlie circular to our office for settlement. I We think, however, that as a matter of justice it should have a gratuitous insertion, i uy giving uie circular as early an m.-er-, tion as possible you will greatly oblige, Yours, respectfully. The following is the circular. The reader will note that $2 is required, in advance, in addition to 5 per cent. commission and that only the latter is to be deducted from collections. The firm evidently intended to do a safe business, at all events, even if they secured advertising free: Important to the Public. Office of & Room.., .... Broad wav. New York. Having received numerous -ipplications by parties who have been swindled by schemes known as Gift Enterprises, origi nated in New York and vicinity, has in duced us to go to considerable expense in procuring such information as enables us to oiler to our clients a plan by which they may be protected in their just rights. To do this, we propose to collect from the proprietors of such lotteries the prizes justly due the ticket holder, as represented to them by circular or otherwise. This necessarily involves considerable expense, and to defray the same we are compelled to ask of our patrons a remit tance of two dollars. Our charges will be five per cent, of the amount collected, which we propose to deduct out of. and r.ot until, the prize or the money value therefor is in our hands. JE-Zr- Parties will address as above, &c. Now, we have not the slightest idea that this firm have been to the least expense to procure information as stated. We believe that the sum total of their outlay lias been for printing and postage, and such expen ses as may have been necessary for them to send out the circulars above. Their profits would no doubt be im mense, from the $"2 fees they receive, but we wih again to warn the public against placing too much confidence iu such concerns, Capt. J. M. He has established an agency there for the express pur-, pose of attending to Oregon business in the E ist and all we have to say at present, advisory to those who may receive those golden opportunities sent by irresponsible parties, is; th it they forward all papers, nroney, etc., tu Captain Keeler. CAPTAIN mexes; Editor Enterprise: With sorrow I saw the announcement of the death of my respected friend Captain Francis Menes, and thinking it my duty as an old shiphilte of hi, (having been 1st Mate of the ship Jlorniivj Star, of which Captain Maries was Master) I write you tub sketch, thinking that it will be read with interest by very many of the Cap tain's warm friends and acquaintances on this coast, and also iu France. The Horning Star was a French-barque and belonged to a French company V. Marzion & Co. of Havre De Grace. France and was sent by them to Oregon. It left Havre De Grace in December, 1846. for Erest, to take part of a cargo" belong ing to Arch Bishop Blanchett, who, togeth er with ten priests, seven nuns and three brothers, also took passage and accompa nied ns to Oregon. The vessel lurt Brest 'm JanuaiT l6i7 arriml at tI,e Columbia viver Bar on the last of June; crossed the bar July 10th, and arrived at tbo mouth of the Willamette on the fifteenth of the same month. Here we discharged our passen gers and the cargo belonging to the Bish op, -as we could not reach Portland from inability to cross the bar at the mouth of the Willamette river. The fraternity pro ceeded to locate themselves at Oregon City. We then returned down the Columbia river, and leaving Astoria in the latter part of August, 1S17, sailed fur Tahita where we arrived about the 1st of October. Here we discharged the remainder of our cargo and sailed to Yalparaso. where we re ceived instructions to go to Peru to ob tain a cargo to take to Havre De Grace. We immediately set sail for this point and obtained a cargo of saltpetre, which we landed at Havre De Grace in September, 18 IS, after a voyage of nineteen months making our home there for a few months. In the last of November (as near as 1 can recollect) I visited the home of Capt. Menes in France, it then being his inten tion to remain there for life, if the business of Marzion & Co. could get along without his services. But the company required him to m:ke another voyage to Oregon, to establish a French settlement here, which he reluctantly undertook. So in Decem ber, ISIS, we left Havre De Grace, and reached the Columbia-river Bar about the middle of July, IS 19 ; remained outside of the bar seven days waiting for a Pilot. But no pilot could be obtained, and by advice of the captain of an American brig, who informed ns that Mr. Heave, the Bar Pilot, had been drowned in the Bay of San I"ran cbco, it was agreed that both vessels should cross the bar as soon a- the wind was fa vorable. Captain Menes, having crossed once before, consented to go ahead while the other vessel should follow, but in do ing so took the wrong direction, for the channel had changed since 1817, and the I Morniiuj Star was badly wrecked for nine I liours on the bar with very heavy weather j against us. The American ship, I forget j i me name, liieiruau ueea in our wane I passed us about "eH) yards. She fctruel-: ! j the bottom at several places, but passed , on she drawing but about six or seven j I feet of water, while the Mjrnbut Star ttrew j J 10 feet. We lot all the small life-boats of ! the Hominy Star while 'attempting to low er them to save the crew, at, which time one man was drowned. The keel was lose from the stern and the rudder lost leav ing the vessel uucontrolable but, through Providence interceeding in ourbehalf, and the courage of the captain and crew, it was brought to Bakei's Bay with four feet of water in the hold. This was a most mirac ulous escape. Most of the pumps were broken, and it was almost impossible to keep her afloat; but. with the courage and skill of the Captain and crew, and the aid of Mr. Latta, a river pilot, who brought to our assistance ?. number of Indians who were kept constantly at work pumping and bailing, we reached n place of safety. We built a box rudder with which we succeed ed in steering the vessel up the Columb'a river to Portland and landed where the Allen & Lewis waiehoiise iiov stands, which all pioneers of Oregon will well re member. Here we succeeded ill saving the cargo, and the hull was sold to Messrs. Couch it Flanders, and by them to Mr. Charles Hutchins, who afterwards burned her for the irons and copper, as the cheap est Way to convert his investment to good account. In 1819. Capt. Menes opened a French store in Oregon City, for Marzion it Co., in which I remained as clerk until 1S53- In 1850 Dr. John McLaughlin became a part ner, and continued so until 1 i n which year tlie business was closed, and Captain Menes located himself at St. Louis, (French Prairie.) Marion county, where he resided until his sudden death on the 2oth of De cember last. This popular preparation contawKS no mineral of any kind ; no deadly botanical element; no fiery excitant; but is a combination of the extracts of rare balsamic herbs and plants, with the purest and mildest of all ditlusivc stimulants. The week stomach is rapidly invigorated, and the appetite restored by this tonic, and hence it works wonders in cases of Dyspepsia, and in less confirmed forms of Indigestion.
