A new comer named -John Campbell, claiming to hail from the Lake country, was arreted at Grants Pass on Monday last bv Sheriff Patterson and brought here for trial on a charge of robbing Julius Shmitt of -$10 which he had in his panti in his room at the Union livery stable. De fendant had n trial before a jury in Justice Hubbel's court on the following day when the jury disagreed and he was di-charged. Winter Sturgia, who has been in Stanislaus county, Cal., for some time pst was with us several davs this week. He was on his way to Benton county, where he will make his future home. The county fair project has been abandoned for the present and tho en ergies of tho citirens of Jackfonville will now bo entirely devoted towards securing a branch railioad to the main line. E.D. Foudray has commenced action against G. A. Hubbell for usurping the office of Justice of the Peace1 claiming that Hubbell cannot hold two lucrative offices at one time the latter being Town Recorder, which office he still held when he qualified for the of fice of J. From a telegram received in East Portland on Tuesday, it was learned that Milton, the 10 year old son of Hon Binger Hermann had died at Roseburg Tuenday morning. The rumor could be traced to no auth entic source, and is given merely as-a rumor News. We acknowledge a pleasant call this week from Prof. Slraub of the State University. He informs us that the attendance from Jackson county is continually increasing as some nine or ten from this section will attend this year. , r- The contrac'.' o furnish the post at Fort Klamath with both hay and grain has been let, which is evidence that it is not to be abandoned. Newman Fisher of this place got the contract to furnish 200,000 pounds of grain and Sibes Worden of Fort Klamath the It was rumored on th streets of Portland, luei-dav, that Gen. Giblwn had received orders from the authori ties at Washington to hold the troops in readiness for marching at a mo ment's notice. The order is supposed to be due to the threatening attitude of the Mexican government in regard to the Cutting affair. We nevertheless be lieve that when jury is selected to try this case, and the law is read to them as it appars on our statute books, at least twelve good and lawful jurymen will come to our Way of think ing and Mr. Kent will officiate for two years longer.
