J The Slate Teachers' Assoaiationr wHl convene at Astoria .Monday evening, July (Tihr and continue in session July tb, 8ih, 9th- and IOtlk. All teachers as J friend of education are cordially invited" to attend and aid in promoting and developing the eda caiional work of oar State. An excellent programme is being prepared, and will l published' at an early day. Promineat teachers and lecturers from ourcolleges and leading public schools will e present and take part in the exercises of the Association. Every effort will be made to make eachi eesiion eminently interesting, instruc tive and successful. Arrangements have beem roods by which all persons attending, the Apso fciatioa and' paying; full fare over the East audi West Side Divisions of the Oregon aBd California Railway to Portland', will be entitled to return tickets at eighty (80)' per cent, off from regular fare to-destination. Arrangements hae been mide with the Oregon Railway and Navigation Company far exeurnion rates of two dollar and fifty (?2.50) per person from Portland to Aaloiia and return. McElroy, Suptr. of Public Instruction. J. IK Nesmith's Death. Ex Senator J. W. Nesmith died at his name in Dsrryr Polk county, at neon Wednesday.. He had' bean ill for some- time and! bis- death was not unexpected) L.W. Nesmitk. was bern in Washington county,. Maine,. July 23, 1820j he remored in youth to New Hainpthira in 1833; thince to Ohio, thence to Mtssouri) and in 1S43 to this Stale coming with the Applegate party. He wos efected a Supreme Judge for the Territory at the election of June 3, 1847. He took a raiiant part iu the Cayuse wac of 1S48 and was Captain of Company G, Oregon "Volunteers. At the election of June 1!2', rfcHSj.He-was elected' & representa tive to the State Legislature from Polk county. Shortly after Captain Nesmitn, as he was then called, led an exploring band southward through the dangerous Indian country of Southern Oregon, seeking For a practicable route to California. Ha ran far delegate to Congress in 1849, aud was defeated by Samuel R. Thurston, and in 1852 was elected Treasurer- for Polk county, la 1853, he was appointed' United States Marshal for Oregon, in' which capacity he ttrred until 1B5K Ih the Yakima war of 1855 he served the country in connection with General Phil. Sheridan, who had command of a small force of United States Regulars. In 1861-'67"lie was United States Sen ator from Oregon, his colleague being Colonel E. D. Baker, who wag. killed' at the battle of Ball's .Bluff. General Nesmith'a residence has been at Derry for many yarE-where ha farmed on a large scale, and kept house in the old '.vie of hospitality and welcome. Senator STesmith was noted for his keen wit and humor, and. some of his humorous wayings bad a national rspu tation. He was a typical pioneer, and one-ofttho foremost figures of the early stttlerssof tbis -State who are rapidly passing' away.. Abont 18 months ago, while I -was hunting, I picked up soin favorable looking: quartz, and after looking soma time I found the ledge and gave a party l- interest to put on The first ear's assesment, Af'er working Rome time aud the ledge Bepminp broken-, work was suspended and nothing has been done with it since. I received assay from J. H. Fisk of this rock, none lesn than $40, and some as high as $150 to the toa carrying Rome silver. About the same time Dr, Sturdney and W. J. Stanley lo cated what is known here as the old copper lode IJ miles-below Woodviile. This is what in called a true figure vein l)ing between prophy and slate. Though the ore is not high grade it will no doubt be a paying mine, as it is from 8 to 10 feet widfy some of the best ore assays 25 per cent, copper, and 20 in gold and silver. This ledge runs about 10 degrees east of north. Having received information from T. D. Jervitt last spring during his stay in WoodiUfo-, that some rich- silverore had been found in this locality,. I en couraged O. Bod an old Colorado prospector to spend sobip time looking for the ledge. Ho soon found sonic good float ore and a small vein runn in? 100 ozv in stiver After looking at the ground, he located on a- ledgy runn I nig quartering across the strati vein 'mi... i j r 11...1 .1... -u: t l ! lub ivuv is cuueu mv vruver xoju ttuu runs 20 degrpes west of north, and lays between prophy and granitrrand the owners think they have a bonanza The Little Galma owned bv Otto Lind II. Kinney and others is about 1J miles west from the Bo)d chim anil runs nearly north and south and a says from $25 to 50, in gold and sil ver to the ton. On upper Gravp creek about 20 miles from Woodviile the Blalock Bros, hate a large and promising ledge running N. VT. and 8 E. The assay shows 20 per cent, cop per and from $8 to $16 in gold and silver. Samples of ore from these ledges can be seen at T. T. McKenzie's of your town. Any information we can give you of present and not of past prospects will be gladly furnish ed. W. J. Stanley. Hon. Ginger Hermann, Congressman-elect, is preparing to make a tour of the State to familiarize himself n ith its people and interests. He will start from Jacksonville in alout two weeks, going across Klamath and Lake coun ties into Grant, through Eastern Ore gon, along the Columbia into Portland, thenoe along the coast and the valley. He will stop at all the principal points, examine the mine?, Indian reservations and see just what rivers and harbors need improvement. The Congressman elect will ride behind his own team and the trip will consume most of the summer. Mr. Hermann has already been to Washington and has become acquainted w ith most oE the Senator and. Congressman of other States,, and he is now fo familiarize with Orecon and its interests. He proposes to go to Washington as a walking lexicon of Oregon and its resources. "R-gister." The Grand Lodge of tne A. O. U. W. of Oiegon, Washington Territoi) and British Columbia will assemble at Salem July 7tbr probably at the State House. About 150 delegates are ex pected to he present.
