'-, Tf t' 1 UfiESOH SBnThm JACK1Vll,l.r., Saturday, 3Ltr 30, 1885. Mr. Koehler's Statement XEOARDINO THE SIDE-TBACK AT CEN TRAL POINT, OX THE O. t C. IEditors News: In jour issne of May 25ib you. published an article from yonr correspondent at Salem, j dated Maj 23d, which contains some filaliciocs insisuations against me. I do not consider it necessary to reply to those insinuations, but deem it prop er to state the facts as far as I ad con cerned. On April 10th I bad a consultation t Central Point with Messrs. Beall and Magruder in regard to a side track at said point which brought to light the existence of a difference of vpinion as to the provisions contained in House bill No. 190, then supposed br all of us to have become a law. After.my return to Portland I asked Hon. R. P. Earhart, Secretary jf Ptate, for a eertiEei opy of the act. On April 18th I received by letter his re ply, stating that the bill bad failed to pass. On May 1st Mr. J. W. Howard, of Jfedford, called at my office, making some inquiries in regard to my aetion with reference to the side track at Central Point, which were answered by my saying that an offer for putting j in a side track had been made by me. I mentioned to him the fact that the bill above referred to had failed to bs come a law, and as this was news to him, and apparently a'so to many peo la of Medford, 1 telegraphed to the railroad agent with request to tell Mr. J. S. Howard, local agent for the sale of town lots at that place for the Ore gon and Transcontinental Company. I was again at Central Point on the 13ih inst. The walls of the ware house, referred to in the special cor respondence from Salem, were not op, jind, of course, no freight stored. Respectfully yours, R. Koehlkr. JZorsesfor Oregon. An Into Ocean special gives the following: The largest shipment of Percberont ever brought io this coun try arrived yesterday from France on the Denmark. The lot -jonsists of 47 " 8tftHtnsltnd 62-TfiaTearpTircfcasetTafr Ja Forto Bernard, of the greatest breeder and dealer in horses in Franc, August Tachern, by Edwin Blowitt, of Fremont, Neb., manager of the Horse And Land Company. One of the stall- j tJmui. a 3-vtor old. weisln within a 1 pound or o of a ton. All the ani mals are registered horses, and some Are what is known in France as govern ment approved. One stallion of this grade cost $2,800. All the stallions cost over 51,000 each. The mares cost from $500 to $1,200. They are bound for Baker county, Oregon, where the .company las the largest iorse ranch in America, if not in the world, branding this year about 11,000 animals. Most of the Stallions will be turned oat with the .otlie. stock to run At large on the government lands. A new rule fcas been -adopted by the Interior Department, -whereby all ap pointments for Surveyor General will i be limited to practical surveyors. Un der existing arrangements the Depart ment finds that the surveyors are de pendent on their chief clerks and dep uties for the technical information re quired to properly transact the busi ness xf the office and it is to work a reform 5n this respect that the new rule has been adopted. It has alto been determined that the appointments --for-Jtecister of Lands, Receiver of the Land Office and Surveyor Generals will not be confined to residents of the Territories in which the offices are lo ated, as tha Department holds that these pre not strictly Territorial offices. The World's Eposi1'011 will be closed on May 31. The friends of the Exposition havo raised $95,000 by subscription to meet the expense of tarrying it over nnlil next November, wlje? ' WN' be re opened. Superin tendent Jefferr, ef the Illinois Central Railroad, has telegraphed that the rail xoads and car companies reaching New Orleans will subscribe 5100,000 to wards the expense of reopening the Exposition next winter. The Board of Management has paid off 50 per rent, of its indtbtednesi, and believes that the Expetitioa can be re-opened naxt winter free of debt. Tho Northern Pacific has contracted do haul wheat from Oregon to Chicago st 32 crnts t, iiundred pounds. This is at tb rate of 10 cents and 2 mills a bushel ftr transporting it about 2,500 guiles. The prico of wheat in Cncago is now 91 cents a babe), thus making wheat worth 72 cents a bukhd os the bukhsl oa the line of the Northers Pacific Spark, the new Democratic Com niisioner of lie General Land Office, says that his recent order suspending 6nal action on all entries of public land in the .Northwest was neither "political nor geographical" Ta its character, but was solely intended to prevent fraud and rascality. Honest, bona fide settlers, he says, will not be injered in the least, and will have no difficulty in getting out thrir patent .. . Mr. .Zjcb Montgomery, ot Cali fornia, has been selected by Attorney- General Garland tn iis First Assistant, t The appointment brings down a slorm of criticism. Montgomery was a "cop perhead in California during the war, and since the suppression of the re bellion has largely devoted himself to attacking (he puWio school system. General Sara Carer, the Prohibi tionist, says that the reason his party does not succeed is because it is poor. How about that pet argument that the man who Joes not drink one glass a day at ten cents a duy will be worth a small fortune in a half a century. Most of .the Prohibitionists ought to have made money in that way. The war cloud That has so long hung over England and Russia, but which had partially cleared away, is again daikening, and according to latest ad vices, the probability of war is as great as at any former time. Grast's Pass, Or., May 25, 1885. Ed. Sentinel: Perhaps your ram lag leaders would Ixjtr.tertsted la sorra news' about the Yank Qaartz lode. Mr. McNewH has cone back and again bonded it at a less figure. He was aware that it carried cold and silver in quantities to pay. Iow that the late improvements in working such ores justifies the outlay, he has let a con tract to cut through it on both sides of Rogue river. Both tunnels will be about -300 feet each or across the lode, which is 300 feet in width and if th y can get 5 or C dollar rock it will be a bonanza better than the Comstock. He can get -a face on the lode above the water line of a thousand fest. They can utilize Rogue river to run thtir stamps and ere the year is gone there will be a 100 stamp crushing mill running night and day and there is rock in sight to keep 100 such mills running for a century. The lode hns been trased from Briggs creek to Grave creek, a distance of twenty miles, and in a lode carrying low grade ores is more likely to carry the same amount to the ton one place as the othrr. The least result by the working process tliat McNevm took to Sau Francisco was from 7 to 14 dollars. If such is the result on that, and it is as good on Jthe water itieJtoxJbjdnjevdnped, Josepbme has a tuture richer than the famous Comstock, and Galice creek and Roguo river will have a popula tion larger than virginiacity and will consume all that can be raised in Southern Oregon. The son of Sen ator Frye, of Maine, who has been suffsring from a severe cold, which settled on his chest, was cured by a few doses of Red Star Cou&h Cure. He publicly endorses it as prompt, pleasant and tafe. Dr. Cox calls it tho best remedy. It contains no opi ates or poisons. Notice to Soippees.
