E.TH MI COBS Z? -ST- n9BB9nsaiaKmmna i i iiriTJiiniL DR. LIHBIG'S A Microscopic Reformer. The Hew York "Tribune" is doing work in exposing the record of the bogus reformer, Cleveland, as sheriff cf Erie county. A careful persual of the facts leave no doubt in the mind of an unprejudiced reader that Cleve land accepted the office of sheriff with the sole intention of making as much money as he could out of the taxpay er!, flis bills were all higher than those of his predcessor, Dirccy. The aggregate of Cleveland's bills was $30, 306,36, while that of Dorcy's was$2G, 639,81; Clevelard's excess being 313, 663 55. The Touchers show that in many cases he charged more for ser Tices than (he law allowed, i-otahly for "executing Patrick Morri&ey," for which job he received 5650. though the board of FUpervibors had lixcd on the sum of $500 for the performance of this disagreeable duty. Even a Democratic board wore obliged to cut down Cleveland's dishonest bills, nnd did so to tho extent of $4471 50. Did CIsveland carry his claims to the courts, as ho should have done, had they been just and right? No. the man who as willing to turn hang nan for a small consideration was willing to let this largo amount go, be cause he undoubtedly knew that he was not entitled to the money he thus attempted to obtain from the treasury of Erie county. The investigation alto Bhows that Cleveland, while sheriff of Erie county, used his influence at Al bany to lobby through a scheme that largely increased the civil fees of his own effice. That his total income, while sheiiff, was about $70,000. After deducting $4500 of illegal fees which were thrown out, he seems to have obtained from the county $795 more than his predecessor for the sher iffs office alone. If the increase in his civil business was equally large, he must havo altogether obtained ubout 17,000 more than tho sheriff" who preceded him. And this man, sup ported by five of the most corrupt city rings that the municiplatcs of this country have ever been cursed with, is the candidate of those who are hun gering and thirsting for administrative rform. Cleveland's record as sheriff fo Erie county shows him to be a law yer with little practice, who accepted the offico of sheriff for the purpose of making all the monpy he could out of the taxpayers. His passion for micro scopic reform did net develop itself until he became mayor of Buffalo and -ka-WS-affltbte-Jonger to iinktv any-, thing himself. A Siory of Blaine. A gent'eman who was recently in Augusta tells a gcod story of Blaine. His letter of acceptance was being dis cussed and his companion and quest expressed some surprise at the remark able showing he had made of figures in support of tho tariff policy of the lie publican party, saying that he had never seen the facts grouped in so forcible a manner before. Blaine said it reminded him of a little story. An Irishman who had. lately came over went to his employer and asked him to write a letter tp the old folks at home. The employer took his pen and Fat dictated: "Wud your honor plaze tell 'em I have mate wunst a da) ?" "Why, Pat, you meat twice always-, and often threo times a day." "Sure, sor," said Pat, "that's thrue, but I'm tellin' 'em now more than any one in the hull couuthry will belave." "Iowa Capital." The Klamath (Oregon) "Star" says: We have frequently, for the past seven or eight years heard different stories told concerning a dreadful monster that inhabited a body of water known as Crater lake, which is situated about tifty-Gve miles west of north Linkvi.le, but up to this time paid but little at tention to it, supposing that it was nothing more than a superstituous story circulated only by the native In dians. But since the return of John Shallock, who, with others, has seen the' monster, and no mistake, we are now compelled to -believe otherwise, and that there is a very hug's animal of some kind that inhabits Crater lake is a fixed fact. Mr. Shallock, in dc bcribiiig this animal, says it looked to be as lprgc as a man's body, and was swimming with about two or three feet out of water, and going at rapid rate, as fast as a man could row a skiff, leaving a similar wave behind if. Its face or head looked white, and al though it was n long way off they could plainly see that it was of an im mense size. Several shots were fired at it while swimming, but it was so far off that they could not see where their bullet3 struck the water. Chas. Moore, who has visited the luke, says the bluffs around the lake are 'from 1,500 to 3,000 feet above the water and almost perpendicular, there being only one place that parties can descend to tho lake, and when seen nt that dis tance they look like Miiall children. If this b" the ne'e, tl p nninml s-een bv Shallock and party inu.-.t bs indeed a huge annual of seme kind. '0U Bit HAD Tffl AT E. C. BROOKS' New Drug Store, Jacksonville, Or. ClOOlKS.
