John Orth and family went out to Applegate last Sun day, for a trip and when nearing their -destination one of thehorses in his team commenced kfcking and filially fell down dead. The horse wav a valuable one but Johnny congratulates himself on the fact that none in tho wagon got liurt. It was a narrow escape, how 'ver, and Mr. Orth did well to hold the team so that no further injury re sulted while the family was climbing "out of the wagon. Attention IIepuiilicans. The Re publican State Central Committee "-of this State have made arrangements with the railroad company whereby all members of a 'Blaine and Logan '-club In Jackson county can join"in die -excursion to Portland for the nominal '-sum of $7 for the round trip. All -join;; from this place will leave Jltd Tfonl on Monday Sept. 22d, striving at Portland on the evening of the 23d Tickets for the return trip will be good until Friday morning Sept. 26th and the wives of members can also recur tickets at the excursion rates tor the round trip. Quite a number from here have signified their inteu tion of going, but all thus inclined must secure tickets on or before 4Mon "day September 15th as notification must then be sent to order tho number of cars required. All along the Sacramento river, the talk is that rail toad work is to be resumed again, es peeially at tunnel 9, which is a long tunnel. Probably some work may be done to keep the tunnels and grade in condition tor tuture operations. The wagon road between here and "Delta hag been fixed up considerably by the railroad company while build ing railroad, and preparing for exten sion above Delta, end Autenreitb has also been making improvements, thus rendering the trip a pleasant one be tween here and tho Bav Citv. The Redding "Free Press" referring to the excursion to Delta, says com plaint is made against the engineer for the reckless speed on the return trip; from Backbone to Redoing he made nearly a mile a minute. This rate of peed over, a new crooked road greatly alarmed both male and female passen gers, and many of the latter with blanched faces and closed eyes, prayed for a safe ariival home. Tho merchants and business men of San Francisco are urging the Central Pacific to build the California road advising the securement of the Oregon branch, towards assisting the business prospects of San Francisco, now se riously damaged by rivalry of the Northern Pacific and Oregon branch road leading down to the California Boundary. Hassett have returned from their prospecting trip. Judge Wnton has returned from Portland but will go there 'to locate soon. Studies have been resumed at tl e Ashland Co. lego with a good a' ten dance. Tho new lodge of A. 0. TJ. W. at Medford will soon be organized by W. J. PI male. Tho Indianapolis "Sentinel," whicn published the Blaine libel, is Mr. Hen dricks' personal ortan. Mr. and Mrs. Win. Hoffman have both been on the sick list for some time tut are now improving. We are under obligations to the manigerx of the Mechanic's Fair at Portland for a complimentary ticket. A lot of Blaine nnd Cleveland hats are exected at Max Muller'a pot office store early this week. Get out. For the finest clingstone peaches we have yet seen we ure under obligations to G.B. Caldwell of Williams creek. A tailor shop will be opened here next -week by the former foreman of the Nobby clothing store at Ashland. Nellie, the well known trotting mare owned by C. W. Kahler, will compete for State Fair purses this year. F. W. Sawyer of Keibyville and John Nfwcomb of Applegate liavo r- turned from Salem fully restored in health. Mrs. W. L. Bilger of Portland and Mrs. Robt. Kahler of Tacoma arrij ed this week on a visit to parents and friends. The Willamette University at Port laud will soon commence the erection uf a handsome medical college to cos' 25,000. Rosh Hashannah will come on Sept. 20th this year nnd Yoin Kippur on the following Saturday. E. Jacobs' store will be closed on Soth days. Dr. G. II. Logan, the leading photo grapher of Anhlnnd, attended the Pioneer's re uninn Thursday and took several views of the crod while they were enting dinner. The time between Portland and San Francisco by the overland route has been to shortened by the extension of rai'roads in both states that passen gets are nqvy c'opiing through in fifty, nin hours, Alex Watts, and Henry and J. W. York of Josephine count' were in town this week. They are all South ern Oregon Pioneers and came over to attend the celebration. Our City Marshal, Jas.P. McDan iel, was laid up with a congestive chill this week and Ad. Helms officiates in his stead. Mr. McDaniel was borne better at last accounts. Jay Beach, the Oregon hoiFcroan will be on band at the fair with his usual valuable stable of horses. He will come direct from the State fair here. "Yreka Union." C. W. Kahler, Wm. Kahler, Jr., J. R. Little, Wm. Mensor and Chris Ulrich and family will take in the Stale Fair at Salem and expect to leave here tomorrow night. Goods are being sold at cost by Wise Bros, of Ashland on account of quitting business at that place. There is no humbug about this aud they mean just what they say. Constable -Walrod of Ashland brought down a county boarder from the upper pnd of the valley this week charged with burglary and ho is now in jail awaiting the action of the next grand jury. j The Mechanic's Fair commences at Portland, October 9th and will con: in ue till the 25th of that month. Round trip excursion tickots will be sold by the railroad company for $1G from Medford or Ashland. Tire assessment of the county has been finished by Assessor Nichols and that official's term of office aUo ends a' this time. Mr. Nichols has proved a v-pry efficient and capable officer during his two term's serv ice in that position. The Red Men and Kubli bricks are now well underway and will be rushed to completion as soon as possible. Mr. Kubi says he proposes showing what a linn looking hardware store shou'd look like when the building is finished. Judge Day will hereafter be found at the office formerly occupied by Judge Prim in tho McC'ulIy block. He is a Notary Public, conveyancer Hnd col lector, or will make out any kind of a legal writing required in ship shape for small fees. Col. John E. Ross wears the only Butler badge we have' yet seen in this section. It's a genuine spoon, made of silver, but the dinner committee of the Pioneers made us premise that we would not tell that they missed sever al spoons at the dinr.cr last Thursday. While in Ashland tliw week we pud the Nobby clothing store a visit and found an immense stock of all kinds of c'othing, ready made, besides a large line of cloths from which a selection can be made for suits. Mr. G., with assistants, will commence at once, to put the mines in shape for active woik next winter, nnd being an old hand at tho business we look for good returns if the season should prove favorable. The mechanical department of the Jacksonville steam flouring mills will hereafter bj in charge of G. W. Al bright, a new comer from the Est, but heretofore at the Olw ell mill in Phoe nix. Mr. Karewski has also received more new machinery this week, being determined to make the best Hour to be had in this locality. Fred Schwatka Strang of Salem was appointed to the cadetship in the An napolis naval acadiny made vacant by the promotion of Weeks to a lieuten ancy in the arm. Strang is now on his way east, to be ready for cxaniin.i tion on the loth. Tho appointee is 17 years old, and is n nephew of Lieut. Fred G. Schwatka of Arctic fame. The "Times" says a larger jail will be necessaiy socn if crime keeps in creasing in J.ie.ksou county. The purses to be given this fall by the Mt. Shasta Agricultural Associ.i tion amount to over 2,300. The r.-ic ing distiut comprises Siskiyou, Trini ty, Shasta and Modoc counties, Cul., aud Jackhon, Klamath, and Lake counties, Oregon, but no horse shall be eligible to the District races unless owned in the District prior to October, 1883. An Oregon exchange gives the num ber of bop yards in the Slate at 192, and of this number about one thiid are in Linn county. The Chinese ere crowding out white labor in hop pick ing. There is money in raising hops at even fifteen cents, although it is probable that twenty, or perhaps twenty five cents, will bo had for this year's crop. An Iowa farmer, who came to Port land a few days ago, said that he had a splendid farm which he had owned and occupied for eighteen years. It was one of the best farms in Iowa, but he had to feed his stock seven months in the year. In Oregon, he learned from a stock man, that he hail to feed bis stock only from four to six weeks. That settled the question with him. During the past year seventy six patents were issued to .citizens of Oro gon, an nverage of one to every 2299 people. Residents of Washington ro ceived twenty one patents, or one to every 357G people.
