OREGON 8E8TIHBI jack.m.illk i Saturday, January, 23 HF4 Mr. IMnina has declared in the jnokt positive terms to heveral men in high position that he would not be a presi dential candidate. Blaine would like to lie Jiccretary of state again, but it i not Relieved that he has set his heart upon it. i . The United States treasury opened the new year with an exhibit showing a debt reduction during 1883 of 110, 000,000;,and "this in spite of the tax legislation of the last congress which, in the first bix month's operation of the new law, cut down the revenues 28,000,000. - The democratic papers seem to be terribly out of joint because President Arthur did the honors of host on New Year's day in a new suit ot clothes. In fact, tht opposition press is as much shocked by the President's appearance in elegant broadcloth as if he h-.d dawned upon his callers with no more clothes on at all than Eve had when she played audience to the boa con strictor, nor than Mr?. Venus of Jlilo wore when she sat for her photo. When General Sherman wus down in Texas, some years ago, he was asked by a r.ewspapcr reporter, how he liked the countn? Being much out of hum oriust then, ho replied. "Wei', if I owned hell and Texas, "I'd rent Texas out and live in hell." That made the inhabitants verv mad, of course, but the editor of a country paper got eten on the general. He copied Sherman s offensive remarks and added: "Well, damn a man, anyhow, who won't stick up for his own country." The democrats want possession of the national government to inaugurate I reforms. They havo had New York I City under their tender care for forty years. And the figures in Harper's I "Weekly of January 12, 1884, prove IthatitLas been the worst governed, land best robbed city of the world for I all those years Republican legisla tures have done their best to stay the (lands of the followeis of Tweed and Filden, but it has boon of no avail for long. Do lambs cry for woU-cs? Then Im'11 the people long for democratic rub'. In nn article on the affirmation on li high license ordinance of Porl- and by the supreme court of Oregon, Pf- -lonto "Rei- ,!L '.' ".v iinere. Only le foolish will close their eyes to the bet. hatct er views a man mav itertain relative to the liquor traffic, b should have the coolness and prac- pal sense to look about him and ob Irve, as he must, the rapid growth the conservative temperance ele- ent." lit is said that Senator Sherman feels rely the disappointment resulting km his inability to take the Presi- icy of the Northern Pacific. His IbitionR now are all towards great fi lial enterprises; and caring nothing comparison for political honors, ho not but regard the loss of an nppor ity to biing his great talents to bear m the managemcut'of the most gi- tic transportation system in the Intry as n misfortune. He is weigth- jlown, however, by his duty to the Itical party which has so often hon II him. To resign his seat in the .te would result in the election of a oc-at; not only that, but it would e the majority in the United States te uncomfortably close. He had Iternative, therefore, but to decline irolfered honor. KNAVE OK FOOL? A msn named Wm. Ruble, a parly to the famous Kflly-Ruhle mining uit, has been permitted the usi-of the "Northwest News," in which to abu9e the Judge and some of the officers of the Couit of I his district. This person, a somen hat unsavory importation from Polk county, whfre he was con stantly in litigation, has cost this county more than the value of his worthless carcass, and has the ef frontery to attack tho press here and bedaub his slime, on a number of worthy citizens. He is a professor of Christ, just such an one as brings scoffing on religion, and his time seems equally divided between hypocritical praying and wholesale and malicious lying and it is a nice, question whether he be greater knave or fool. Ruble has a double in this dirty business who writes ostensibly from Salrm over the name of "Newton." Who i it? "Nenten knows enough law to be sonio one else, but he is too plain y Ruble himself, and tho one or. the two, double or singK, Newton Ruble ov Ruble Newton play into each others hands, the one accus ing Hie sentinel me oilier ine "Times" of lying about the Coyote '.reek affair and being incapable of pub lishing truth. The main oliject of attack in the fulse stufl tent to the "News" is exiludge Hanna, than whom there has been no more impar tial or honorable Judge in the State, and tho trash written by a man such as we havo partially sketched will neither injure the, Judge or benefit the writer. Mr. Kelly, who stands high here as nn honorable citizen and Mr. Jarres Biidscy who was duly author- zed by the Court to enforce its decree are also too far above this unclean scribbler to need defense. When "Ruble Newton says a lot of women and chi'dren surrendered to Birdsye and his posse he expects to create a laugh, but it.so happens thct Newton Ruble's "women and children" were big strapping men with breeches on their less and Winchester rifles in their hands, skulking behind brush piles and in ditches to earn tho eight dolhrs per day promised them by liublo for resisting the lawful authori ty of the Circuit C urt. It so happens that seventeen of the law breakers in eluding Ruble were tried b Justice lluller and thiitcen held to answer for riot and nary one wore petticoats Ruble pretends that he ordered Bird sye off the claim hecause tho proceed ings had been saved bv-f-"""-f,J J t ' . (Utiles Ananias and he knows it5T The a;.peal was rot perfected nor thot proceedings stayid, and Rublo ought Jto know just when they were, for ssvfkral days after his men weakened and gave up the prop erty and the record stands for itself. So far from distorting any facts in this shameful affair tli3 Sentinel publish ed only the statements of worthy eye witnesses without giving them color or bias and has only been too lenient with a man who deserves the severest pun ishment for inducing, or forcing, or biibing others to break tho law. Hav ing aiso broken it himself, at a cost of thousands of dollars to tax payers of Jackson county, he makes it a subject of jest and merriment. Ruble brags that he ordered the' officer of the Court to git! gitl git and that is just what the people of this county should say to Ruble cmphisized with a big G so he would not misunderstand. Th's is one of tho characters described by Shakespear who "wear the livery of Heaven to servo the devil in" and in Ruble's case it is so well worn and threadbare that it is but a thin dis guise. Twelfth Annual Couioutluu. The twelfth annual convention of the Oregon State Woman Suffrage Association will lv held in Portland nn Tuesday and WeJnesday, Februar' 12th and 13th. ISSt, at Turn Hall. " Woman Suffrage Association, equal rights clubs, and societies in sympathy with the suffrage movement, of what ever name or order, are earnestly re quested to send delegates. The usual reduction of forty per cent, in fares will be made to visiting delegates by the various transporta tion companies, and entertainment will be provided for all who come from without the city. Let the ftiends of equal suffrage come promptly forward and make this convention a memorable one. H. A. Lougiiaky, President. Makv E. Combs, Secretary. The "National Republican" neatly sums the Democratic position on tho tariff revision question as follows. "The largest possible amount of im portation of foreign goods consistent with the revenue absolutely necessary, and the least jtossible consumption in America of anything American, ex cept tha cereals and raw cotton." Several communications are crowd ed out this week received too late. I Orecon, with her 95,274 squaro miles and CO,000,OCO acrrs of fanning land, lit r fertile sO.l pikI salubrious climate, the objective po'iit in the Northwest, bus become the theater of many vast and stupendous enterprises during the past five years. Fur her, 1883 was the year of years. The pre ceding twelve months were disappoint ing in many respects, but with 1883 came times of unexampled prosperity amply atoning for the failures of the past. But if the season had been dry and unproductive, one event marked it, in tho estimation of Orcgonians, as the turning point toward assuredf pros perity for all time to come. This was the completion of the Northern Pacific Railroad, on the 8th day of Septem ber. On the 11th of that month the event was celebrated at Portland by a grand parade antl review. Whether the great Northwest will be benefited to the extent dreamed of by its people, through the opening of direct railroad communication with rfie East, remains to be seen, but that its immediate eH feet was to give business of all kind an enormous impetus cannot be denied. There was no revival or revolution in trade. The whole country seemed at one leap to spring ten years ahead. Real estate in city and country ad vanced from 100 to 500 per cent., an inflation to be dreaded in alnust any land of tho world except this, where the natural resources are inexhaustible. Upon Portland, tha MOST METROPOLITAN SMALL OI7Y Of the world, the influence of this for ward impulse was direct. The di visions of the Northern Pacific stretch ing over the State in all directions exerted as direct an influence upon nearly every section as prevading a--that which still agitates Portland Tho volume of business increased to astounding proportions for a city of only 35,000 inhabitants, the wholesale trade alone of last year amounting to nearly 50,000,000. It manufactured during the same time about 11,000, 000 worth of articles, including him ber, cars, cigarn, clothing, ironwork, saddlery and harness, cordage-, eh ctri cal goods, flour, fruit canning, furni ture, fur.", l;quor8 and other good-. Her needs of the past made the place a small manufacturing center, and as in the future Portland must compete for the Oregon trade with Chicago and New York, her manufacturing interests must necessarily iuciease. Circuit Court commences ..londjv rtfortiury ni- ml'ijf1 ;u:ige 'flahna presiding. The new building will be ready for occupancy then. NEW ADVERTISEMENTS. Medford Livery AND Egan &. McOTahon, Props,.
