"Oh, sir," (die said, 'o make you understand why I took the flower might be a story too long to tell in n court, uud it mL'ht be out of place te tell it anywhpre to strangers, but as ycu havi spoken so kindly I will tell you. iearsago, I lived in this city. My parents were well situated and I was carefully reared. I married a man whom evpryone recongnied as an ele gant gentleman but tome he proved to bea drunken brute. At last he took our little boy and went away, I know not where, leaiing me wi'ha h..liy just two months old. My parents had died ami I went our into the country and changed my name. I worked for a living, heart-oroken as I was. One day my little darling was taken ill. I took her in my arms started towards town, where she niiyiit hive the prop er medical attention but she seemed to grow worse. At last I knew she was dying and I sat down under a tice. 1 held her '.o my bosom a long time, foi sho shivereJ, and when I looked again, she was dead. A man who lived near by made a coffin, and I buried the ittle girl under the tree where she had lied. Then I went awny, I know not how, and began a long search for my husband, not that I wanted him, but that I wanted my son. 1 must hae gone crazy, for I was seized one day and taken to a mad house. How- long 1 remained there I do.i't know but I could see that I was much older looking than when I went in. From time to time I implored the keeper to let me out, but he refused. About a month ago I taw an opportunity and escaped. I was not mad, for when again under the clear sky, the memory of my trou bles were ns fresh as though but a dty had passed. I turned, nfter much in quiry, toward my native place, and a few days ago I arrived here, but I did not stop until I had found my way to the little grave under the tree. I hail carried stone and built a little wall around it, but briars ind bushes had grown up so thickly that I could hard ly find the place. I cleared the briars away and came to town. While pass ing along the street I saw thi-i nianV flowers. I stole a geranium pot, and it now sits on the li'tle child's grave." The flower dealer had sunk upon a bench. "Grea' God, judge!" he ex claimed, springing up. "The woman i mv mother." Coral. Msticriea. Some interesting. information ubont the coral fisheries of Italy is given in a repcrt of F. G. Ilaughwout, United t States Consul at Naples. More than fife hundred Italian ships are engaged in tho fisheries, either upon the Italian hanks or upon those of foreign nations, giving employment to about 4200 salors. The qumtity of coral collected annually by the ships sailing under the Italian flag amounts to5G,000 kilo grams, valued at 4,200,000 lire (ujout SO.uuu.uuu;. In Algeria, 10,000 kilo grams of coral are taken anually, rep resonting a value of 7f)0,000 lire. In addition, the Spanish ship, about CO in number, gather along the coast of Spain and elsewhere about 12,000 kilograms of coral, in value- about 800,000 lire. From theso figures it may be seen tliat the quantity of coral gathered untiual'y by snips not bearing tha Italian 11 lg amounts to 22,000 kilo gnins, of the value of 1,55 ,000 lire. This, added to the figures already "iven as tho direct result of Italian fisheries, amounts to 78,000 kilograms valued at 5,750,000 lire (about 81,150,000). these are the figures which represent approximately the annual g thering of coral in different seas by ihe Italian and fore gn ships and its value. There are in Italy CO eonl work simps, giving work to about GOOO men, women and children, by whom the coral is brought to that cendition which renders it so interesting ar.d precious. The men employed earn from 20 to 80 cents a day and tho women and children from IC to 40. Sunderland's cherry tree, measur ing 70 inches in circumference, is thrown in the shade by one found by "Vindicator" on the farm of Jasper M. .Mitchell, Powell's va'ley, which was planted by his father in 1858. It is the "oxheart" variety mid bears a full irop every year. A careful n:enur inent about 3 inch's above ih grounl gives its circumference at 103 inches, or- 2 feet 10 inches in diameter. About 4 feet up the trunk tho first limb puts forth, which is G3 inchps in circumference. Two teet higher another limb pi.t out that equals in size any ordinary cherry tree. The tree stands 45 feet in height and its branches cast a shadow over nearly 100 feet square. It stands just at the corner of the door-yard and the ground around it has never been cu tivated; in fact the tree has been Used for a hitching post since the time it became Urge enough to stand it. It is some what cut and fc.irred, but rough usage does not beem to hurt it, and the chances for many more good crops from it nro very promising. It is certainly the champion cherry tree of Oregon so far ns heard from. Bishop Wurtzburg, a noted clergy man, used to delight in telling a joke at his own expense. lie was walking in a meadow, when he met a little shepherd Ind, "What are you doing, niy-soiii" said the bishop.
