The building known as Hill's hoarding house at Ashland got afire on "Thursday last and burned to the 'ground proving a total loss. The fire 'is supposed to have originated from a 'defective flue. No insurance. Loss about $2,000. Will Probably Locate. Jay sBeach and wife returned from the Vreka Fair this week and the former Ss now negotiating for the purchase of farm near town, and if terms are Agreed on he will stay with us. While on (iis way from Linkville to Yreka on Thursday last Pat McManus' team ran away and going off the grade the wagon 'upset and fell on top cf Mr. McManus inflicting injuries from which he 'died soon afterwards. Mr. McManus 'was formerly a retidentof Jacksonville, a pioneer on this coast, and leaves a family to, mourn his loss. He was aged about 50 years. Appointd Receiver. By the con sent of both parties in regard to their choice, Judge Hanna has appointed J. Hansen receiver of the Wimer 'Simmons mine, near Waldo, winch is now in litigation. Mr. Hansen is an experienced miner, havini; had charge of the English Co's mines at Galice creek for some time past, and the work at the Waldo diggings will now go on without interruption. Religious. Jacobs and Constable Birdsey arrested Mr. and Mrs. Luellen in Manzauita precinct last Wednesday for the alleged kidnapping of a nine year old boy mnifi I Bragn, n on-of-the.-woman by a. former husband. John C. Brown, the father of the bay, is a resident of Canyonville, where the boy is ."aid to have been stolen by the defendant. Protective Society. The follow ing are the proceedings of the last meet ing of the Butte creek protective soci ety: Tli 4 initial meeting of the so ciety was held at Eagle Point on the 21st inst, and formed a temporary or ganization by calling A. J. Daley to the chair and chosing W. H. Parker Sec. Pro tern. On motion, W. H. Parker, W. H. Simpson, and Thos. E. Nichols were appointed committee to draft a consti tution and by law to report at next meeting. Some of the plays were exceedingly well rendered, especially that of Rip Van Winkle on Thursday Dight, while of soma of the others not as much could be said. The pres komet in the Eastern sky, which Ke distinctly seen by every one at L ? i t .V iy morning, is certainly ine most remarkable one of all the modern comets. Prof. Lewis Swift, director of the Warner Observatory, Rochester, N. Y., states that the comet grazed the sun so closely as to cause great dis turbance, so much so that it has di vided into no less than eight separate parts, all of which can be distinctly seen by a good telescope. There is only one other instance on record where a has divided, tht one being i comet of 1864, which separated to two parts. Applications have wbeen made on Mr. H. H. Warner bv parties who have noted these cometary offshoots, claiming the ?200, prize for each one of them. James Birdsey has just put up an other new buggy for his own use that is a beauty. L. L. Savage returned from Rose burg this week but will return next Wednesday. An Albany type-setter is training a quartette of flies to put the periods in his "takes." Teamsters are now charging two and a half cents for freight from Rid dleburg to this place. Marshal Payne done a rushing busi ness last Sunday and three d. d's slept in the coder that night. Mrs. Mat Obenchain returned from Lake county this week and her hus band will also be in soon. They report having had a good time. Mr. Logg, Father of Francis logg of Forest creek, died, at his home in Chicago, Ills., this week, at a ripe old age. The Mart Taylor troupe is now play ing in differentparts of Jackson county and is reported as doing a good busi ness. Several communications are again crowded out this week on account of the lack of space and their late ar rival. John Sitr.rnonet'ie an oTu resident of Yreka, died at that placo of heart dis ease on Tuesday last aged about 47 years. Wednesday November the Sih, is the date set for the opening of bids for the construction of the new Court House. Miss Eugenia Kelly has a number of pupils learning instrumental music and gives the best of satisfaction as a teacher. "Black -Bart," the noted highway, man, was seen near here not long since, but for some reason was not Mrested. Senator Prim and Representatives Stanley and Furry returned from the Legislature this week after an absence of six weeks. Proceedings of the Josephine Cir cuit Court will be published next week as we failed in getting them in time for this issue. A serenade was tendered Mrs. M. Hauser last evening by the Jackson ville Brass Band on the occasion of her 59th birthday. Senator Dolph was accorded a grand reception at Portland this week at which nearly all the prominent men of that city were prseut. Nickell returned from Kcrby ville where they had been attending court in Josephine county. Tho new distillery under superin tendence of N. K. Lyt'e is going up and soon will be ready for active work. The capacity will be. about one barrel per day. All the goods purchased bv S. Cohn while on his recent visit to San Francisco are of the best quality and latest style. Ladies will do well to call and see his new dress goods. The new monument for the Boddy family has arrived and will be placed in position in our cemetery by W. L. Record, the agent, next week. It is a fine piece of work. A soap firm gavo away money on the streets this week actually throwedit out on the street for the boys topick it up but the aforesaid firm seemed to make money nevertheless. Mrs. Dr. J. W. Robinson accom panied by her mother-in law, Mrs. N. Robinson, started for Roseburg on last night's stage to visit Mrs. Leach who is reported dangerously ill. If you want a sewing Machine call at E. C. Brooks' drug, watch, clock, and jewelery store. His machines are a little finer and his prices a little snugger than any other bugger's. Col. Stone and wife returned from California this week and propose spen ding the Winter on their farm at Am merman's station. They refused a neat sum for their old honiesteafl this week. The official returns in Ohio give the Democrats fourteen and the Republi cans seven Representatives in Con gress. In one district the Republican majority is only 15, in another only 42 votes. The finest lot of grapes we have yet seen this season were brought us this week by, Peter Britt. They were raised on his place north of town and for size and flavor are superior to any ever raised here. Seymour Condon was elected State Librarian; D. W. Parties hero who claim to have re ceived information from headquarters seem highly elated over our railroad prospects and they believe now that we will not bo over one and a halt miles from the road. James Hughes of Kerbyville made us a pleasant call last Saturday while on his way to San Francisco. He will probably buy a stock of goods while below and again commence busi ness in Josephine county. He says Rogue River valley suits him well en ough and he proproses remaining. John Hailey Jr., and Win. Carll visited Jacksonville this week on stage business. The former went south on Tuesday while Mr. Carll had to return to Roseburg to attend court as a wit ness in the Roadman murder case. James McDonough came from Yreka this week bringing back "Sleepy Kate" and C. W. Kahler's "Nellie." Both of these horses were out of fix at the Fair, having had the pinkeye a short time since, and neither won a race. A large number of bucks, squaws and papooses came in from tho Klam ath reservation this week after their winter supplies and tbey all teem well supplied with chiciamon. The well known David Hill is in charge of the train. Mat Tali, who has just camn in from Lake coutity, infoims us that they have already had some severe stormy in that section and that stock men are fearing a hard winter. Nearly all of them are well supplied with feed, however. From Jacob Klippel we learn that all the miners in the A pplegate section are about ready for active work and are now waiting for water. The Squaw Lake company will do some good work this season and will soon commence piping. The Ohio delegation will stand eight Republicans to thirteen Democrats; the Bourbon majority is 17,000. Ma son (R ) has been elected to Congress in the second district of West Virginia, and one cf the other districts also elects a Republican. At a meetingof the VereitiEintracht held last Sunday it was decided to hold another masquerade ball on New Year's night. All those who have ever attended the parties given by this society will go again as they never do anything by halves. The game law goes into effect next Tuesday and there are some parties who would "better look a little oud." A sportsman's club is beinsr talked of. who propose informing on and prose cuting any parties who kill deer and other game out of season. A change will be made to Winter timo by the O. & C. Stage Co. about the first of next month. When this is done Jacksonville will bo a home sta tion, and an extra driver4 will be put on the swing from hero to the Moun tain House on the Siskiyous. Telegraph repairers have a lively time of late between Grave creek and Roseburg where the railroad construc tion parties are now at work. There is hardly a day iut some work is re quired on the lines and the trouble is always between those points. Farmers are busy plowing and a large crop will be put in this season in anticipation of tho market afforded by the building of the railroad. Our grangers need not be afraid of having a surplus left next year and they will get cash for everything they have to sell. Mr. Shannon, of Cottonwood, had a rough time with a bear, which he wounded in that vicinity last Saturday morning. While out hunting, ho dis covered a bear, which he had shot at and wounded. The bear rolling into a gulch, Mr. S. procended to the gulch, and as he stood on the edge to dispatch bruin, the bank caved letting him down upon the beast, resulted in his getting clawed up considerably in the hands, arms, and other parts of the body, be fore being able to escape. Mr. Shan non was seriously chawed and clawed by the infuriated wounded bear, but it is believed be will recover from his wounds.-' 'Journal." The case of the Siate of Oregon against Grover, Chad wick and Brown, for money illegally taken from the State Treasury under the Grover ad ministration, was dismissed in the Su preme Uourt at balein this week, the defendants having satisfied the judg ment The following case&have been ap pealed to the supreme -;ourt from this judicial district: H. State vs. lanYan; ap peal from Jackson cotnty, State vs. Week brothers; appeal from Lake county. j It is reported that a 'very fine lode of Nickle ore has ben discovered on Myrtle Creek near Mount McLaughlin which promises tn prove very valuable. It is said that parties from Son Francisco are becoming interested in the mine and will have them thoroughly tested and worked. The Redding "Independent" of last Saturday says: It now seems evident that work will be commenced here shortly by tho grading forces, as they are now in town two or three gentlemen from below who will Betas foreman, and havo been sent here to await the arrival of the laborers.' Hull, who has charge of the looms in the Ashland Woolen Mills for some timp, has bought Jos. Satter field's place of 350 acres up at the Mead ows for 3900, and will remove thither with his family this week. Mr. Satterfield has bought Mr Hull's house and lot in Ashland for S1200. "Tid ings." A number of whites are still em ployed on the C. C. W. It but the Chi nese havo all been discharged. Less than four miles of the road remains to be completed and work will be con tinued during the winter so as to have it ready for travel early in the Spring. That finished is reported to be tho best mountain road in tho country. William Mansfield, an Oregon burg lar with a record, has been sentenced to twelve years in the State Prison from Portland, where ha was detected in his latest offense. It is supposed that ho killed a man at the front of the Northern Pacific Railroad about a vear ago, but there does not appear to i be evidence enough against him to con vict. vl When we 8cesijKw7jMKn,,;rt'vl to cure a half-dozen orimre classes of ilisfases, w conclude that it is ahum bug. Mr. Seymour W. Condon was elected by the Legislature State'Librarian fcr the ensuing two years. Mr. Condon is a straight forward young man of tine ability and thorough gertleman. He graduated this year with honors at the State University, and hs since been in the employ of Hon R. P. Earhart, in the Secretary of States office. He has many friends in Oreron who join with us in congratulating him upon his election. The German colony wao located in Flounce Rock precinct a short time since have got into some troublo about land matters that will rrobably re sult in some of them letving there. We hope to hear of an amicable adjust ment of the difficulty and that they will all locate permanently. There are eight men in the crowd all of whom are masters of some trade and are surely a desirable population. Messrs. Fisher and Mul er transpor tation contractors for the government, have been considerably annoyed for a while past on account of the scarcity of teams required in taking govern ment stores and vegetables to Fort Klamath. Record of the same house arrived from the Bay city via Crescent City on Saturday, last, mak ing the first trip over the ' new Cres cent City wagon road by wagon. Mr. McGrath is here on a trip of recrea tion and sight-seeing, this being hi first trip to Oregon. His house does a large business in the maiAle line in Southern Oregon, and receives new orders each day on account cf the su perior work furnished. ' - Cure eor Blackleg. Peter Ivory, of Clover Swale, who is an-experienced cattle raiser, says he has a remedy which will cure the blackleg in cattle every time. It is as follows: When the animal is first taken it will exhibit lameness in some one of its legs. With a sharp knife open the lame member between the knee and hoof, where will bo found a lump or sack filled with a white, watery substance; squeeze all of this out then fill the opening with salt and pepper,, and bind the limb up with a cloth. It is a graphic narrative of the Jeanette expedition from the time when, after the parting dinner, the crew separated into threo sections. This report, therefore, supplements the "hip's log and DeLong's own minutes, all of which -vcro preserved, and this completes the history of the ill-fated expedition. The report is accompanied by a carefully drawn chart, which shows in detail the wanderings of the explorers, and the story of tho events of July 12th and 13th, attendant upon the loss of the Jeanette. It will comprise all the counties of Eastern Oregon, except Wasco, which remains in tho Fifth, and will have added to it Washington, Clatsop, Clackamas, and Columbia, Multnomah comprising the entire Fourth District. The First, Second and Third remaining unchanged. Gov. Moody will have to appoint a Judge for the new District, who, according to the bill, must bo a resident thereof.
