WHAT SBC SAW IS C8EBCH. He staved at home and slie wtnt to church. After dinner he asked her: "What was the text, wife?" "Oh! something, somewhere in Gen erations; I've forgotten the chapter and verse. Mrs. High sat right be fore me with a Mother Hubbard bon net on. How could I hear anything when I could not even see the minis ter I wouldn't have worn such a looking thing to church if I'd had to Lave gone bare-heade. "How did you like the new minis ter?" "Oh? he's splendid! and Kate Darl in was there in a Spanish lace cape that never cost a cent less than fifty dollars; and they can't pay their butcher's bills, and I'd wear cotton lace or go without any first." "Did he say anything about the new mission fund?" "No; and the Jones girls were all rigged out in their yellow silks made over; you would have died laughing1 to Have seen them. Such taste as these girls have; and the minister gave out that the Dorcas Society will meet at Sister Jones' residence, that old poky place." "It seems th'atrycu didn't hear much of the sermon." "Well, I'm sure it's better to go to church, if you don't hear the sermon, than to stay at home and read the papers; and 0, Harry! the new minis ter has a lovely voice; it nearly put me to sleep. And did I tell you that the Hiches are home from Europe, and Mrs. Rich had a real camel's-hair shawl on, and it didn't lcolrlike any thing on her A long silence, during which Harry thought of several things, and his wife busy contemplating the sky or view when she suddenly exclaimed: "There! I knew I'd forgot to tell you something. Would you believe it Harry, the fringe on Mrs. Jones' par asol is an inch deeper than mine, and twice as heavy! O, dear! what a world of trouble this is." Small Pox. We have received a circular from the State Board of Health, giving warning of the preval ence of small pox in this State, and urging the necessity of sanitary meas ures among the people, and vaccination. "With care in the selection of virus the danger of contracting disease there by is reduced to a minimum. It is pretty certain that only one disease ever has boen introduced by vaccina tion, and with ordinary care this is impossible. It is better to avoid vir us taken from adults. The dangprs attributable to the oper ation itself are tco light to weigh against positive benefits. It has been estimated that one serious accident may occur in one case in 100,000; certainly not more frequently than would be expected from any similar wound or abrasion of the skin. Prop erlv done with due precaution as to health and vigor, and the age of the subject, and the source of tho virus used, it may be confidently affirmed to be altogether without danger. Bovine virus, or that taken directly from the cow, is fashionable-, and, in consequence of the excellent arrange ments which have been made by differ ent parties, it can at all times be ob - tained fresh and pure. It is reliable, -swd it is to bjerommended.Yet, there is strong rfilfflito believe, and such is the opinion of the highest au thorities on this Bubject, that human ized virus, obtained from tne- arm of a healthy child, loses none of its efficacy, even when propagated through genera tions." The Black Leo. Winnemucca Silver State, Nov. 14: The black leg has made its appearance among cattle on Big Meadows, and is proving very fatal. H. O. Marker lost eight of his largest and fattest calves from the disease last Friday, and several others had the disease, but were living at last accounts. The black leg first made its appearance about two years ago in eastern Nevada, near the Utah line, and since then has been gradually spreading westward. A year ago it was on the Humboldt above" Battle Mountain. Last summer it reached the Little Humboldt, and now it is iJBig Meadows. It does ntfc seem to smaflaasmeiv loner in anv riirticnlnr J.
