A Port Town&end dispatch of June 28th conveys the following about the Skagit country: Jl gentleman of experience and reli ability to-day returned from isitinj:, the Skagit mines and reports the river boonvng. On Friday last the bteatner Nellie could only make forty-seven miles above the mouth of the river, and passengers had to disembark at the de'U and get to their destination as best tbey could. The. river was rising at the rate of six to eight feet daily, and in many places was overflowing its banks. When the bill distributer lias disappeared from the streets and his bills trampelled in to pulp, the advertisement is performing its silent mission in the family circle. It appears to a constituency three or four times larger than the actual sale of the paper, for there are few newspa pers which do not pass from hand to Land through three or four persons with every issue. Elko "Post." A speaker at a recent meeting of a Massachusetts Teaclier.s'association said very aptly that too many teachers and pupild seem to entirely lose sight of the true end and aim of all study, and in stead of teaching and studjt ing to know, devote their energies to pieparing for recitations and examinations, with lit tle thought of anything beyond.
