A Port Town&end dispatch of June
28th conveys the following about the
Skagit country:
Jl gentleman of experience and reli
ability to-day returned from isitinj:,
the Skagit mines and reports the river
boonvng. On Friday last the bteatner
Nellie could only make forty-seven
miles above the mouth of the river,
and passengers had to disembark at the
de'U and get to their destination as
best tbey could. The. river was rising
at the rate of six to eight feet daily,
and in many places was overflowing its
banks. Indications show that some
years ago the Skagit overflowed to an
enormous extrnt, and there is eyer
indication this vear of an unusua

says, is a never-tiring worker in the

bill distributer lias disappeared from
the streets and his bills trampelled in

its silent mission in the family circle.
It appears to a constituency three or

A speaker at a recent meeting of a
Massachusetts Teaclier.s'association said
very aptly that too many teachers and
pupild seem to entirely lose sight of the
true end and aim of all study, and in
stead of teaching and studjt ing to know,
devote their energies to pieparing for
recitations and examinations, with lit
tle thought of anything beyond.
Speaking of William H. English the
Indianapolis "Journal" says: "If any
body thinks that he can carry Iudiana
they are woefully mistaken. TI.e
strongest man in his party could not
carry tho State this year, and he is far
from the strongest man in his party."
The Fort Wayne "Gazette" says:
"Garfield unites all shades of Republi
cans in Iudiana. There will be no
stay-at-home Republicans in that State
this year. The general"satisfaction of
the ticket will bring out a full vote."
