Death of Admiral Farragut. It was, however, by his distinguished naval services during the rebellion, that he achieved his proud distinction among the great naval com manders of every age. Ttc-f t Having recently returned home from & protracted tour to Goose Lake and Fort Warner, we are able to give some particulars of this country, that, is. not generally known. The whole country east of the Siskiyon or -Cascade range of .mountains consists of. high table lands. Its altitude varying from 4,000 jkV$J00 feet above the Pacific ocean. l-Taiabout the same altitude as Salt Lakeland the surrounding country. A large portion of the-country is prairie, but the highest elevations contain plen ty of timber and good pure water. It is an excellent grazing country; and is settling up very fast Two or three hundred claims have been taken, and there is moie stock here, in proportion to population, than in any other part of Oregon. Owing to the high altitude the weather must be cold in winter, but during our tour through the country the weather was very warm, the ther mometer ranging from 89 to 102 degs". me met some settlers who had been in Goose Lake since 1866. They say the winters are much colder than in the Willamette or Rogue Kirer valleys, but not near as cold as in Missouri, Indiana and Illinois. There was good barley and excellent ripe wheat standing in the fields of Goose Lake; and vege tables in abundance on Link River and in Goose Lake valley. Among the number we noticed turnips, 'beets, cabbages, beans, potatoes, and toma toes of excellent flavor. On the east side of Goose Lake Mr. Gre enman had afew acres in corn, which had com menced silking and bid fair to make a good crop, j In our next issue we propose to give an account of other portions of that country, want of space preventing us from saying any more at piesent. The Sailroad Survey. The survey recently made by Hon. Jesse Applegate, for the Oregon and California Railroad- Company, runs through Sam's valley, crosses Rogue River above the mouth of Butte Creek and goes up the North Fork of Little Butte Creek, and crosses Link River about two miles below Nuss' Ferry, and enters California east of the sink of Lost River.. The highest altitude on this routeis south ofMpunt McLaughiin,. only 2,600 fret above Rogue 'River. This rise is gradual, and tho road can be easily constructed. On the east side oi ,the mountain the fall to Link River is only 126 feet, and from there to the California line 'the country is nearly level. This route aoids the sharp and high elevation ot the Siskiyou mountain, on the stage route, and the high rim which separ ates Bear Creek from Dead Indian Prairie. Mr. Applegate will recom mend this route for the railroad ; and it is more than probable if the road is constructed by the prrsent company this will be the route. To say the least it is as good a route as any other, and there is more vacant land for the road than np Bear Creek. Peooress of the Raiboad. Work on the Oregon and California railroad is vigorously pushed on, notwithstand ing the excessively hot and sultry weath er. The Pudding river bridge u ill be completed to-morrow, the piling of Lake Labbish will be finished in a few days, and the track is graded all ths way to Salem, and about three -miles beyond, toward Jefferson. A large force of stone masons and laborers are at work on the Santiam' at the point where the bridge will be built across the river. The arrival of the iron for the track is now awaited, and as the vessels freighted with it are each over due, their arrival. may bn daily expect ed. It will be an easy task to lay the rails as 60on as they shall be received. Doubtless the first of September will witness the running of the cars between East Portland and Salem. O. Bulletin. From the Oregonian we learn that the ship Tordensljold, with a cargo of railroad iron, 700 tons, arrived at Ast oria on tho 13th inst; she reports hav ing spoken another ship, also loaded with railroad iron for the Oregon and California railroad, off Cape Horn, which is expected to arrive soon. Both cargoes will be nearly or quite enough to finish tho track to Salem. America AGniccLTuniBT. The soldiers, indivi dually, are desperate. The Emperor U believed in actual command of army. Baden troops fired railroad near Stras bourg. Tribune cable says, 10,000 French wounded, at Campion, and the camp presents a scene of riot, disorder, and dissipation. Reports of disturbences in Paris have unsettled the garde mo bile, one half of whom would break away and return in case of revolution. Yesterday's Dispatches. Telegraphic dispatches, received at this office yesterday, although quite lengthy, contain little additional in formation. Proposals for peace from the English Cabinet were received at Berlin and also communicated to Na poleon. Napoleon expressed readiness to treat for peace, but King William and Bismark, who had been telegraphed to, replied, "if Napoleon wishes for peace, he must ask for armistice in the usual way. Issue must be decided by arbitration or war." A great battle is reported as progressing between Metz and Verdun, large numbers being wounded and killed on both sides, but, so far, neither side appears to have gained any decided advantage: A naval engagement occured in Baltic J sea in which the French were victori ous. Prince Albert of Prussia has been killed, leading a cavalry charge. Gen. Le Grand, a French general, was also killed at the head of his division. Ma ny brilliant cavalry charges are report ed.
