Tho Glasgow Herald has tho following ; Tho thunder storm wnlch on Monday seemed brooding over the city developed Itself with terrible Intensity in an easterly direction and gave rise to n scene of ex traordinary description on the Kdlnliurgh mid Glmgow line, nt n short distance cast of the Croy Station, occasioning n fi-ellng of the utmost alarm nmong those who were its unexpected witnesses, and whose lives were placed in considerable danger. I rom the Information wchnve been able to gath er, It appears that as the four o'clock ex press train from Kdlnbnrgh to Glasgow was nearing the Croy Station, and speeding nlong tho line, which nt this point is ctrricd through n deep cutting, the en tiinc driver was signaled, when parsing the four o'clock p.m. express from Glasgow, to proceed cui'tlously. Shortly alter the warning had been given, n furful noise was heard j flsihes of lightning gleamed though the hazy air j followed by quick crashes of thunder j Hie carriogra of the train were nt tho same time assailed with wlivl seemed to the affrighted passengers wlllilu a terrific shower ol hall ; and in an Instant n perfect delugo yai water, came sweeping down from the shelving rocks on cither side of (ha cutting. A water spout had evidently burst in the vicinity of tho line ; and before the speed of the train could be diminished to any considerable extent, it shot right into the suddenly released wa tcrs, which, foaming nnd seething, rushed Into the cutting in solid sheets. 'I he wa ter gradutlly roe outside the carriages, reaching In n short time tho foot-board, and aficrward Heating to the first clis compartments, white tho hissing noise which was produced through contact with tho works of tho engine tended to increase the feeling ol consternation nnd alarm which already prevailed among the passen gers. The difficulties of the situation were father complicated by the sudden descent of n quantity of stone work from the hlglits above, arising probably from the givlug way of n stone dyke, which spreading ncros tho ralM, destroyed any hope that might hare been cntcrtulncd of n passage effected down the line nflcr the water cleared away. All this was the work if u lew minutes. The passengers had been placed In n most critical position, and the safety with which they wcro cnubltd to tide it over no personal injurios having been nutnlned was probably owing to the presence of mind of the engine driver, who, when he saw the turn which affairs weie taking, at once fixd 'his damper over the furnace, thus preventing the Ingress of "C water and avoiding the cxplo'ii which might, otherwise have followed. The train was by and by backed out of tho water, and while It was evident that lliojournry to Glasirnw mint li for some tim deliy-til all positive d.iugir was at nn cud. The water-spcul had evidently been limited to a comparatively narrow area, with which however, it had operated with terrible force, for on reaching Croy It was found that here the elemental strife had been even more alarming whilst It lasted. The telr graph wires along the lint had bten des I roved m that communication with Glas gow was cut o." Damishoi'si.y Kitten. On Wednesday evening last, a gentleman residing nbnut a mile from the city, was bitten by tome in sect, and was In a short time afterward la ken violently 111 suffering the most Intense agony during tho whole of the night. Par oxysms of the moil violent character en sued about evry live minutes. Dr. Ling don was immediately called to the sufRr's assistance, and failed In giving reliefduring the night by all tho antidotes he could sp ply. In tho morning however, his patient became comparatively cay, continuing throughout the day. During the night while tho suffering teemed more than a hit. man could bear, the phylsican applied II quor in copious quantities ; also chloroform, morphine, laudanum, and lathed lLo body of the sullercr with chloroform, yet without producing tho desired effect of relieving the pain, or even having the slightest stup ifying Influence on the patient. Tbe Doc tor says that in all his experience as a phy sician be never saw a man tnfier to much. The functions of tho system were almost wholy suspended, and the nerves complete ly prostrated. It has not been posltvcly ascertained what bit bin ; but it Is suppos ed it must have been a tarantula, scorpion or centipede. Another gentleman of this city was bitten prccisley Iu tho tame man ner tome timo ago, and camo near losing his life. At the time it was thought the lat erwas bitten by a spider, but of this there was no certainty. Stockton hiltpmdtnt. Lkadkii. We received the second num ber of tho California LtaJtr this week. The number of letters which arc now being received nt the Dead Ixttcr Office In Washington, scut there tinder the now law, which makes prcpoy. ment of postogo compulsory, amounts to more than 16,000 per week. Tlicso figures denote tlmt cither carelessness or Ignorance of the law on tho part of the senders of tlicso tetters. The public should remember tliat the old law allowing letters not pre paid to be tent forward according to I lie address, and double postage collected cf the leccivcr, has been repealed ; that now every letter not annua to be carried through the malls free must hnvc n stamp upon It, or it Is sent to tho Dead Letter Offico. Kspcclul care should be tuken by every person to observe at the time of de positing a letter in tho Post Office that the postage stamp is firmly fixed upon It. Such attentive scrutiny would soon reduce the number of letters "held for postage," and consequently prevent tho embarrass mnt and vexatious delays now arising from tills class of letters.
