Tho Northern papers ore filled with reports of the profitableness of the Ncr. Those who liaro had experience In searching for gold In newly discovered mines aro nwnrc that there Is no business so unccr lain as placer mining, and none In which nn Inexperienced person Is more likely to deceive himself and friends, For example, we recol lect an Instance of a miner on Frnser river. In 1858, writing to his friends In California that the mines were very rich, expressed himself as confident of lliclr being able lo mako their fortunes by selling ofTor deserting their claims In California nnd migrating to Frnser river 1 He saw men on Texas and Hill's liar make from 820 to SilOO with a rocker, and wns told the roll wns growing richer ns the water re ceded i and was also shown large chlspas of puro gold, purporting to have been purchased from Thompson Hirer Indians. With thousand (if others, they were s.nlly disappointed, and hurriedly matte their departure for their old cabin hmnes In Cali fornia, having received a costly lesson In the school or experience. . It Is not sufficient Justification for a stam pede to the Sit.
