Tho Northern papers ore filled with reports
of the profitableness of the Ncr. I'erces mines,
and, as a consequence, a large number of per

and others are rushing thither notwlth-

these mines will prove extcnslrc or generally
profitable. Those who liaro had experience
In searching for gold In newly discovered mines
aro nwnrc that there Is no business so unccr
lain as placer mining, and none In which nn
Inexperienced person Is more likely to deceive
himself and friends, For example, we recol
lect an Instance of a miner on Frnser river. In
1858, writing to his friends In California that
the mines were very rich, expressed himself as
confident of lliclr being able lo mako their

He saw men on Texas and Hill's liar make

puro gold, purporting to have been purchased
from Thompson Hirer Indians. In company
with others, he prospeelrd the Upper l'rascr

turned, dlslunrtuicd, to 1-ort i nlc, where lie
fiiund his California friends, who had followed
the ndvlco given In his letter, and were await
ing his return to point them on the road to
fortune. With thousand (if others, they were
s.nlly disappointed, and hurriedly matte their

school or experience.
. It Is not sufficient Justification for a stam

statement will not Jutlfy miners In going n
