Balliet is well known all over the Pacific Coast, having posed as the Cecil Rhodes of America, lie bought the White Swan mine near Baker City, Eastern Oregon, RAILROAD WRECK and advertised it as a wonderful property through a newspaper he owned in Near Redding Causes the Death of Baker City and a mining journal contnolled by himwlfin San Francisco. He also Engineer White and Fire Hentout circular advertising matter through the mails claiming that the mine man Van Tassel. was a producer. By these means he sold stock amounting to $250,000. The southbound Oregon Express, on the Southern Pacific road, which left Redding at 10:45 o’clock Tuesday night, was wrecked about 15 minutes later, near Clay creek, four miles from that city. The accident win caused by a half open switch, which bad evidently been left in that condition by some unknown person, with malicious in tent. The train is what Is known as a double-header, having two engines, and was running at a good rate of M>eed, as It was on a down grade. Both engines were thrown Into tbe ditch and completely wrecked. Engi neer J. M. White and Fireman Robt. Van Tassel of the forward engine were thrown under the wreckage and crushed to death, their bodies being fearfully mangled. Tbe mall car was thrown across the track, where It now stands. All of the passenger coaches were ditched. A number of the passengers were more or less Injured; but so far as can be learned none were killed. The names of Die Injured passengers have not yet been ascertained.
