Harrington, once occupying the chair of astronomy at Ann Arbor and subsequently chief of the United Stat«« weather bureau at the national capital, is said to be work ing as a day laborer in a north Pacific coast lumber camp. Shortly after the political changes which led to Profess or Harrington's downfall in Wash ington his health failed. Insomnia un dermined his strength and impaired his activity. Within the last six or eight years he lias had a variety of experi ences. He was president of the Uni versity of the State of Washington for a year or two. went to the orient, where he was overtaken by scarlet fe- ver, and after bls return to this «»un try worked on a Louisiana sugar plan tation. Still more recently be filed a homestead claim in the fir forests of Washington, but instead of clearing the land himself be entered the employ of a lumber company at Port Blakely. An Ann Arbor dispatch says that hla outdoor life is improving bis health, conducing to sleep and restoring his ambition. He has hopes of returning to his old place in the intellectual and scientific world. Good for Rheumatism. We must raise more of our food at borne and pay out less cash! That ap plies not to all but to many farmers. It luis come to be a habit to patronize tbe butcher, grocer and baker until a good share of the food on some farms is grown, baked or canned elsewliere. Cash Is bard to earn at present prices of farm produce, and when we pay it out in this way we are forced to pay big profits to tbe handlers. We are sometimes told that it costs more in the end to grow food on the farm, but that is not always so, because tbe ex tra labor ban no such cash value as the money we pay out of our pocket. With many of us the time has come when we must reduce cash expenses as far as possible and utilize farm labor and, if possible, unsalable products in pro viding food to eat and sell. Some of us are trying to do special crop farm ing on farms that ought to be used for a great variety of crops.—Rural New Yorker. A distinguished senator of the United State« went to Atlantic City a week or •o ago for a few days’ stay. He took a room at one of the American plan ho tela, agreeing to pay $8 a day for his meal« and room. The next morning after he arrived he was seized with an attack of rheumatic gout. The Population of Mew York. The population of the city of New York, according to the census of 1900, was 3.437,202. Of thia number 1.270,- 00» are foreign born, all but about 50,- 000 being natives of Europe. It is a matter of frequent discussion bow many New Yorkers were born in New York. The census does not tell that, but Its returns do show that 1.882,719 of the ¡»opulation of 3,437.202 were born in the state of New York. De ducting the foreign born population and this New York state population, it leaves us only 274,414 citizens who were born in other states than New York. Of the native American citizens of New York six out of every seven were born in New York stats. That seems rather a surprising piece of in formation. for the reason that one sees and hears so much of New Yorkers who come to New York from Connecti cut Massachusetts, California, Mary land, Illinois, Ohio and lately Pennsyl vania that he gets an impression that the town draws heavily and soniewhat Impartially from all states. The truth Is it draws aspiring, successful and well to do men from all over the coun try, but recruits the bulk of its popula tion either from near at hand or from across the seas. Poorer people don't «»me great distances to New York to peck their fortunes unless they come in steamers.—Harper's Weekly.
