HOW A HE YO UH FEETt 1 aithful care ol the feet has more to <io with good look» than most young la dies are inclined to believe. They must lie kept warm and comfortable by pro|»-r coverings and bv daily bathing and rub bing. No part of the body requires battling more than the soles of the feet. The pores here are very active and should be kept open. All hardening and cal lousing of the feet should be avoided if possible. If the feet are given to excessive per- . r t --------- ;---- ; » • «Piration a few drop« uf ammonia should thpirdailv ha.Hu* nf water. wutor If be added to theirdailv batlu* of they burn, or are very tender, bath them iu weak alum water. The water should always be warm. Cut the nails care fully, shorter than the finger wails. If they break, rub on mutton tallow be fore going to bed, wrapping the toes in soft linen cloth. Corns may be nipped in the bud by a prompt treatment with kerosene oil. Cut the corns down as much as {»uaaible, without making them sore, then rub on the oil, night and morning. If ttie corns make their appearance between the toes, wet ■ piece of tissue paper with the ker osene, and put this between the toesov- ertbecorns, Keep it thereall day while the feet are dressed, ami renew it night and morning. If the corns are young they will speedily vanish. Tiioee of long standing will hold out longer, but finally succumb. The beauty of (he foot doesnot «lepend, as so many think, upon its small size, but rather U|>on its slenderness, height of instep, and |>erfect arch, and upon i’s firmness ami coloring. Beauty is op posed to a tight boot. Any foot looks lietter when the shoe fits perfectly than when either too tight or too loose. A tight hoot makes the face red, not a pretty flush which might be welcome, hut a «lull, purplish red, which is not at all becoming. But a very loose boot is almost as bail for corns as a tight one, as the rubbiug will produce hard spots. Moderate heels should be worn. It is not easy to walk in shoes w ith no L>eels at all, and high heels are not only un comfortable ami bad for the health, but they destroy all grace of movement. If the feel are long and slender, wear front lace or button shoes. If short and I>1 umi [>, boots laced at the side will make them l«?uk more slender. A n O kei . un B eai tv .—1 <lo not think, hays the Pari« correspondent <•( the St. i Louis J’utt-Ditpalrh, that the lovely Mies Mattie Mitchell, daughter of the United 8t»tes Senator from Oreifon, and proba bly the most beautiful of all the Ameri can girls famed for their charm« who have visited Europe within the patt few years, ever received more genuine and gratifying Homage paid to her beauty than she won at one ot the recent dinner parties in Pan«. A L eaflet er 188s —A correspondent in Pennsylvania sends us one of the Re- pubiican campaign cards of 1888, which he took the precaution to save. It con tains these injunctions: W orkingmen ! “Protect your homes! Free trade re duces wages! Free trade will close American manufactories. Free trade serves the interests of Europe. “Protection insures fair wages and reg ular employment. Protection serves the interests of this country. “These are ttie issues.” F or sometime past a committee of the United States Senate has been investi gating the subject of cattle and meat prices and transportation rates, princi pally at Chicage and Kansas City. The main point of interest in t»>e investiga tion related to the quo-« n to the ea- i-tence and operatiou oi a combination among the dressed beef men. Testimony was adilueed at Chicago to the effect that there has been a steady decline in the value oi ta-ef cattle during the last few years without any decline in th» price to the consumer Another point brought out was that the freight tariff on live stock was higher than on dressed I beef, a fact confirmed by the general manager of the Illinois Central Kail road. Other witnesses declared that iu consequence of the higher rates for ttie live stock, dealers throughout the coun try were refusing to buy it, preferring to or«ler dressed iieef from Chicago. In short, the current of the testimony brought out was to the effect that the dressed- l>eef trade was killing the cattle men. Touching the fact of the existence of the combination a former cuniidential employee of one uf the timis undeistood to l>e in the dressed-beef combination declated that such a combination had l»een formed, the meml>ers of which had agreed on certain prices in certain states. This is (lie combination known as the “Big Four,” with headquarters at Chicago. The leading packeis of that city, when sub|o naed to ap|»ear tadorc the committee refused to du so, alleging that it was antagonistic to them and would not do them justice. It would seem at the first glance as though the bloated g.-ntry wete arrogating qs-cial privileges to themselves in thus defying the geneial government, as repiesented by the senate. It Geneial Jackson was piesident to-day there are some who think that Messrs. Arniour.k Co. would have tiie screws put to them a little, say to tt»e extent of confiscating their plant as being in an o|>en state of rebellion, or tunic such treatment, to bring them to a realisation of th.- fact that the people are »till supremo, ’spite of the fact that capi tal is so utterly ublivious of the rights of the public. These assurances will 1« recalled with a decided disposition to “kick them- selves” by many voters who were de ceived by them. ‘-Four years more’’ of high protection were hardly insured be- fore wages in the protected industries Im- gan to fail an 1 mills and manufactories to close. What do the coerced employes of An drew Carnegie think of the “lair Wages'* insured by protection? What do the cotton mill operatives in Fall River, forced to accept a reduction in wages and denied even an interview with the mill owners, think of it ? What do the coal miners of Illinois think of the “fair wages an,! regular employment'' insured by the triumph of protection '* How <lu the glass-workers square their reduction of 15 per cent, with these ante-election promises? < »eject lessons like these are a great help in the campaign of education.
