I ------- -- - ----------- ------------------------- • D eath of a P ioneer .—When a good man dies, it is the sad but con soling privilege of those who knew him in life to add their tribute towards filling the measure of his merit. In the demise of Edmund B. Magruder the State of Oregon has lost one of her early settlers, the world at large one of its most honest and purest men, and this county a most useful citizen. Mr. M. was born in Maryland on the 14 th of May, 1801, and was conse quently a little over 74 years of age when he died. In company with a brother, now living in Crescent City, he left M issouri, and after many toilsand privations in crossing tho plains, ar rived at Fort Vancouver in 1814. After a sojourn of 31 years in Oregon, most of them spent in Jackson coun ty, Mr. Magruder’s reputation stands forth unscathed, his integrity untar nished. All classes unite in pronouuc- ing his panegyric, tho tribute to a good and worthy man. He stood be fore this community socially, intellec tually and personally as possessing good qualities of mind and heart. The deceased was well known to all the pioneers of the State, and his memory will I m ? borne in grateful remembrance. Having been in feeble health for many months, he finally yielded his spirit to his Maker, on Wednesday, July 7th. Requiescat in pace. *#* Democratic Precinct Meeting. J acksonville , July 17th. The meeting then proceeded to the election of nine delegates to represent Jacksonville precinct in the County Convention to be held in the Court House on tho 21st inst. The follow ing gentlemen were elected as such : Calvin Lacy, Henry Klippel, II. L. Webb, K. Kubli, T. B. Kent, Morris Mensor, N. Fisher, John Cimborsky, Fred. Heber. We acknowledge the corn. Being in haste last week, we over looked the mistake in reading proof, which accounts for its appearance. But it docs seem a little strange that a young lady should travel all the way from this place to Oakland, Cal., to go to school on Sunday, as our precise co temporary would have us believe; while in the same issue with great in dignation he announces that a China man had been nearly beaten to death by a Portland hoodlum, and had not been arrested and was not likely to he. O, horrors ! what outrageous peace officers they must have there.
