readers. The wool interests of Oregon
are scarcely second to any other, and
it is important not only to exclude
disease from the flocks but to keep
them in a condition to improve every
year and grow better sheep and better
mutton.— Record.

Two brothers named GaflT have es­
tablished a mammoth hennery in Col­
orado, ten miles from Denver. It cov­
ers about four acres, which is laid out
like a village, with streets and ave­
nues, along which are built long rows of
houses of various designs. Regular
families of hens are assigned to these
houses, and it Is found that they quick­
ly domesticate themselves without
troubling their neighbors. The popu­
lation of the village is about 2,000,
divided closely into social cliques of
Brahmas,. Cochins, Shanghais and
Dorkings, and the chief products are
eggs and Spring chickens. Sunday in­
cluded, the industrious matrons of the
village turn out. daily from forty to
fifty down of eggs, which are eoW In
Denver for from thirty to fifty cents a
down. The brothers Gaff express but
a single regret, and that is, that they
did not found the colony fifteen years
ago, when eggs brought five dollars a
dozen. and a Spring chicken was worth
a pennyweight of gold dust.

A game of chess between Europe
and New York, which was started in
1859 by correspondence, was recently
concluded, after having been in prog­
ress for sixteen years. Thq contes­
tants were Dr. Brenzinger, or Pforz­
heim, in Baden, Germany, and F. A.
Brenzinger, of New York. The latter
player won the game.
