I mportance of C orrect P unctu ­
ation .—The importance of correct
punctuation xvas strongly illustrated
the other day at a meeting of the
Ways and Means Committee, when it
was shown that a comma in one ¡»lac«'
was worth $2,000,000. In the tariff
bill which xvent into effect August 1st,
1872, the free list was extended by
the addition of several articles.—
Among the number added was “fruit
plants, tropical and semi-tropical,”
for the purpose of propagation ami
cultivation. In engrossing the bill,
or in the process of copying it for ofli-
cial printing, a comma was inserted
after “fruit,” an« I all fruit was thereby
placed upon the free list, The custom
officers, however, not noticing the
change, continued to collect duties on
fruit until the error was discovered.
The Ways and Means Committee have
now agH'ed to report a bill to remove
comma, in accordance with the intent
fo 1872. The amount of tax illegally
collected is not far from $2,000,000.
T wenty C ent P ieces .—A bill has
been introduced into the Senate of the
United States to authorize the coinage
of twenty cent pieces. The Pacific
Coast needs such a coin. Fractional
currency is unknown to California,
excepting transaction with the Post
Oflice, and the twenty-five cent pieces
does not fill the void in our circulating
medium. We have no twelve and a
half cent piece, and yet in many of
our minor dealings we find that sort
of enumeration adhered to, which
compels either the purchaser or the
salesman to be the loser of two cents
and a half. This is not the first time
the grievance has been complained
of; everyone has felt it, and mur­
mured against it ; and it is to be hoped
that a united effort will be made by
the entire delegation from the Pacific
Coast States and Territories to ¡»ass the
Bill to which reference is made.
E dwin B ooth , the greatest of
American actors, has not only gone
into bankruptcy, but is in actual pov­
erty. In his schedule of personal
property, he estimates the jewelry
xvorn on his person at $390 ; the value
of his Itooks and pictures at $2,303, and
his other personal property at $3,150.
His debts are a good many times that
amount. When such actors as Booth
fail in life, the outlook to s(*cond-rate
performers must be dismal indeed.
S enator F lanagan , the back-pay
orator from Texas, has succeeded in
discovering the real cause of the late
unpleasantness. When the bill pro­
viding for the appointment of a liquor
traffic commission was before the Sen­
ate, the other day, Flanagan Itoldlv
averred his belief that “the use of al­
coholic liquors caused the late split
between the North and the South.”

P ermanent W hitewash . — The
season of the year has returned when
the inquiries for good whitewash are
raised. We give the following as ex­
cellent: Take a half bushel of excel­
lently burned lime; slake it with hal­
ing water ; cover it during the process,
to keep in the steam. Strain the liq­
uid through a fine sieve, and add to
it seven pounds of salt previously well
dissolved in warm water, three pounds
of ground rice Itoiled to a thin paste
and stirred in boiling hot, one-half I
pound of powdered Spanish whiting,
and one pound of clean glue, which
has been previously dissolved by soak­
ing it well, and then hanging it over
a slow fire, in a small kettle within a
large one tilled with water. Add five
gallons of hot water to the mixture,
stir it well, and let it stand a few days
covered from dirt. For this purpose
it can be kept in a kettle on a portable
furnace. Alxiut a pint of this mixture
will cover a square yard.
We are now ready to sell anything in our
line at lowest cash prices. Persons wishing
