On motion, the nomination of Mr.
A L over with an E ye to the
M ain C hance .—The following story
of a young man, who, until recently,
lived in Lawrence, Mass., is told by
the Aineric<tn, of that city: “He
was eng tged to be married to a young
lady of Lawrence, and in the ardor of
his affection made a number of pres­
ents. Two’or three weeks since tho
young lady died, after a few days’
illness, and the grief of the sadly
stricken suitor was very sad to contem­
plate. Everything that had belonged
to her was very dear to him, ren­
dered doubly so by her untimely tak­
ing off. lit* prized the few tributes
he had given her to such a degree
that he couldn’t think for a moment of
leaving them with her family. He
cami* with a box before the funeral
occurred, collected them very carefully,
nailed them up, and forwarded them
by the next express* to his home.
The sister of the deceased expressed a
desire that she might be allowed to
retain some small «oticenir, and the dis­
consolate lover suggested that perhaps
she would like a muff. If so, he was
ready to sell it. He wouldn’t be mean ;
it cost him $15, and seeing it w i- her,
she might have it for $10. She pro»
duced the money, took the muff and
the lover after the funeral ceremony
«¡(‘parted—doubtless to bestow the
presents he had regained on some new
obj«*ct of affection, providing, of course,
that they are to revert to him in case
of death.
J oaquin M iller did an act last
Christmas which would go far toward
immortalizing a much smaller man
than he. He sent his two children a
pair of stockings apiece from London,
one of cotton and one of wool. But
then Joaquin always did do things
on a grand scale. That historic horse,
you know, w.is rather an extra sort of
cayuse. Not only is Joaquin, the
Webfoot, a poet, but he is a man of
soul, a thorough philanthropist, as his
children will hereafter elieerfully and
gratefully testify.
A young man in Indiana sued his
father for loaned money, which the fa­
ther claims was his own property.
The latter’s counsel, in summing up
the case of his client, remarked:
“Twice has the prodigal returned to
his father’s house ; I wire has he beeu
received with open arms; twice has
the fatted calf been killed; and now
he comes back and wants the old cow.
A bill has passed the California
Senate tu allow each convict when dis­
charged from the State Prison a suit
of clothes and twenty dollars, and
provides that he shall not have hin
hair cut for three months prior to Ids
discharge.
