SATURDAY MORNING, OCTOBER 28,1871.
A lady correspondent sends the’Mobile
Register the following parody on “The
Raven,” by a gentleman now residing in
Mobile county, Alabama. It will, no
doubt, meet a responsive shiver from
those who dwell among the marshes and
by the river sides:
One« upon an evening bleary,
While I iat me, dreamy, dreary,
la the sunshine, thinking over
Thing! that passed in days of yore ;
When I nodded, nearly sleeping.
Gently came a something creeping
Up my back, like water seeping,
Seeping upward from the floor.
“’Tie a cooling breeze,” I muttered,
‘•From the regions ’neath the floor—
Only this and nothing more.”
Ah 1 distinctly I remember
It was in that wet September,
When the earth and every member
Of creation that it bore,
Had for days and days been soaking
In the meanest, most provoking
Fogy rains that, without joking ,
I had ever known before ;
Bo 1 knew it must be very
Cold and damp beneath the floor—
Very oold beneath the floor.
So I sat me, nearly napping,
In the sunshine, stretching, gaping,
Craving water, but delighted
With the breeze from ’neath the floor ;
Till I found it waxing colder,
And the stretching growing bolder.
And myself a-feeling older—
Older than I felt before ;
Feeling that my joints were stiffer
Than they were in days of your—
Stiffer than they’d been before.
All along my back the creeping
Soon gave place to rushing, leaping,
As if countless frozen demons
Had concluded to explore
Al) the cavities—the varmints I—
’Twist me and my nether garments,
Up into my bat and downward
Through my boots into the floor ;
Then I found myself a-shaking,
Gently first, but more and more,
Every moment—more and more I
’Twas the ager 1 and it shook me
Into heavy clothes, and took me
Shaking to the kitchen—every
Place where there was warmpth in store;
Shaking till the dishes rattled,
Shaking till my ivory chattered.
Shaking, and with all my warming
Feeling colder than before ;
Shaking till it had exhausted
All its powers to shake me more—-
Till it could not shake me more.
Then it rested till the morrow
When it came with all the horror
That it had the face to borrow,
Shaking, shaking as before.
And from that day in September—
Day which I shalklong remember—
It has made diurnal visits,
Shaking, shaking, oh 1 so sore !
Shaking off my boots, and shaking
Me to bed, if nothing more—
Fully this, if nothing more.
And to-day the swallows flitting
Round my cottage see me sitting
Moodily within the sunshine,
Just inside my silent door,
Waiting for the ager, seeming
Liken man for ever dreaming,
And the sunlight on nre streaming
Throws no shadow on the floor ;
For I am too thin and sallow
To make shadows on the floor—
Nary shadow—any more I

John set up a wofyl yowl.
“That cat has^got a cold,” remarked
John yowled^louder than ever.
“Confound it, bring a light, and scare
the thing out.”
Thia was too much,* and John made a

“Thunder ! what a cat I” .said the pa-

He also drove Dexter in his best wagon

on record, of 2: 20}, 2:17 and 2:20}, by

the time being 4} seconds better than any

brilliant record, he drove the Maid at
