The Dcmocrftpy have taken the lead in the campaign and will male n strong, oggre :sive fight, with the chances of a victory in their favor if they put out a good candidate. With Independent and Republican condi dates in the field there 13 not a ghost of a ch&nco for either unless the Democrats should put out a bad candidate. If the straight Republi cans would not put any candidate in the field but unit with the Inde pendents on a liberal man there would be some prospect for his elec tion. Or if Kesmith would run in- Debaucners of Youth. It is a common practice of a large class of men in this country to sit around street corners or in the stores in the country villages and othtr places aud relate obscene stor:e3 be fore, not only adults, which is bad enough, but also before boys of all sizes and ages. Some of these people think theselrcs the cream cf society, and in fact some of theai aie esteemed as good citizens. This class of persons is of different complexions. Some only throw out hints or innuendoes followed with a leer or a wink to give them point, direction and a certain dramatic viv idness, but others who arc not so shrewd or politic, yet who are not a whit worse than the first named, spit cut their oaths, obsceuity, and filth with tobacco juice, even in the hear ing of girls and worn n. Both class es are quick to misconstrue and tor ture words aud phrases uttered by others into obscenities and pass their smuttv exchanges across from street to street. This is true of a portion of the Democrats, who joined the movement l. cause they were in a hopeless minority in certain districts, but many of them, even, will remain with us, and all of them are more or less infected with the air. of political independence and will not bear a stifT party bit any more. But Republicans in this county and throughout the State have become more independent than ever. And why not? Was not that party made up of the free elements that burst party chains in 'Gl to fight for an idea instead of booty and party success? The Independents of Washington county have reached that high standard of political inde pendence and mental freedom that they will not vote for a bad man even if he be on their own ticket. It is only a ring of oftice holders and their hangers-on and paid advocate? who howl for a straight party fight and their scalps will hang on the belts of the Independents in '7G. " j In Athens the man who corrupted the morals of the vouth were either banished from the state or heavily fined or put to death but in this boasted laud of freedom and enlight ened christian civilization our youth are daily debauched and grow up to debauch others. We have been led to make th.?se remarks partly by the disgraceful behavior of a voung man in the M. K. Church last week during Bishop 1 Peck's discourse and partly by the conduct of others who know enough to know better and do better. It is a fact that the village with its two dozen idle boys, half-dozen drunkards and do-nothing., is about the worst place for the rearing of pure-minded and noble women and men that there is on earth.
