THE INDEPENDENT. HILLiTT ) : r.iua day "ICT DOLLAR DOI-PII- Ed. Independent : As J. N. Dolph attorney for ikn Holladay; has re cently been slandering and villifying the people of "Washington county, especially those who have the tem erity to look after their investments in the West Side Railroad, it may not be amiss to show jusi who this man Dolph is. The "claiis" of Yam hill and the "hordes" of Washing ton want to know who it is that dares throw mud at them for calling his master Ben Holladay to account. We can tell them. Dolph sued Watkinds, Superin tendent of the Penitentiary, not long ago for slander, and the case has re cently been tried in Portland. The case is stated by Mr. Bronaugb, Dolph's partner, as follows, as we find it in the report of the trial in the Oregoniam Mr. Bronaugh opened the case for the plaintiff. He stated that tbe ac tion was brought on account of pub lished slanders. The plaintiff (Dolph) had been a member of the last State legislature and was oie of a committee appointed by the legis lature to investigate the affairs of the penitentiary, of which institution de fendant is superintendent. The re port of this committee had been published in pamphlet form by the defendant (Watkinds) and appended to that report was a cavd by the de- fmdant charcmsr J. iN. Dolxm, a member of the firm of Mitchell & Dolph, with Laving received from Hawley,Dodd & Co. a bribe or remu neration for the purpose of lobby ing through the legislature certain claims against the State, and stating that when this bribe was received by said firm Mr. Dolph was a member of the legislature and voted in favor of the allowance of such claims. Af ten ads, counsel proceeded, Mr. Watkinds published in the Ore youian a tiill more bitter card, in which he charged Mr. Dolph and Mr. T. McF. Patton, members of the penitentiary investigation com mittee, with being guilty of perjury; repeated th allegation that Mr. Dolph had accepted a bribe while a StaiC Senator to lobby through the legislature certain claims against the State, and wound up by charging Mr. Dolph with being a sanctimoni ous scoundrel and villain. Mr. Dolph now sought redress for such charges at the hands of twelve of his countrvmen. The damages were laid at'$10,000. To show still fuilher tbe charac ter of the chargo made again Dolph, we copy th9 following extracts from thecard of Watkinds published in the Oregon fan, Nov. 2d, 1874, and on which the action was brought: I desire fio say, through your columns that I am preparing an an swer to the report of Dolph and Pat ton on the investigation of the peni tentiary affairs, and hope the press will withold farther comment upon the prison affairs until I can slum up in its true b'ght the perjury of theso two men. if "The whole report is a tissue of falsehoods, garbled evidence, erro neouslv drawn conclusions and men dacity; and before thi3 question is settled I will show in my charge against Mr. Dolph, that the law firm of Messrs. Mitchell, Dolph & Co. were employed to help lobby through certain claims against the State, as appears on the books in my office, while some of the members of said firm were members of the legisla ture, and did vote and sustain the the payment of said claims above re ferred to, is true; and I will show Patton to be just the man he is shown to be in that printed report. And also I will show these sanctimo niouss coundrels to be a pair of vil lains. That is the roughest charge ever made against any public man, or. any other man, in the State of Ore gon. As soon as Watkinds was served with the papers, he came into court and answered that it was true he had made these statements about Dolph, and that more than that they icere i.vc ana ne teas read j to prove iliem. Accordingly they joined issue and went to trial last month before a Port land jury, in Dolph's own county. The substance of the testimony is all puDiisnea in ine uregoman, ana so strong and convincing was it that the lury crave UoJpn tne enormous sum of just one dollar for! his char acter, and compelling him to pay all the costs, about a thousand dollars A he testimony was very rough on Hippie, Dolph and Dodd, and the jury, or a) majority of it, was in favor of giving Dolph 37 cents, (the verdict the Museum man got for a staffed monkey), but concluded they would not, out of respect for the monkey, i Such' is the character of the man j who is now laboring as the tool of Ben Holladay to bully the farmers of Washington county ont of their lights on the railroad. He is a fit tool for such business. We. hope old Benny is pioud of his attorney. He will get to be Governor of Ore gon now in a hurry. Dolph enjoys the proud distinction of being the only man in Oregon, the value of whose character has been judicially .deter mined by a jury of his neighbors and fellow citizens. Go it "let" Dollar Dolph! "let" Dollar Dolph. Mr. Dale the Sheriff of Yamhill county is responsible for this. He says he started from St. Joe tbe morning the jury decided the Dolph Watkinds case, and being curious to learn the result, he inquired at each station along, as the train stopped, if they had heard the result in the "Dolph case." When he got down to Wappato Lake there was a band of Indians camped there, and stand ing around at the station. As usual he lepeated his inquiries, when a big "buck" stepped up and put in with, "Sa3', you talkee about hi dollar Dolph?" The truth flashed upon him at once that Dolph had been valued at one dollar, and when the train reached Porlaud he found that Mr. Hammond's Meetings ( fhe Grove. . We of Forest Grove irere much pleased to hear that Mr. Hammond would visit us, though but for one day. The . previous evening Capt. Wilkinson of Gen. . Howard's staff held a meeting, and also conducted the meeting the following evening. He is full of noble enthusiasm and it does one good to hear and see 6uch a man. For he not only talks, but acts. He devotes his whole life to the cause of Christ, going among the lowest and the most degraded, giving whole-hearted sympathy and help, taking them to his own home if need be. Everyone was pleased with him and aroused to labor more earnestly for the glorious cause. Capt.Iugersol also spoke very effect ively, and impressed many for good. Others too made interesting remarks or gave earnest testimony to the truth of the religion they professed. Mr. Hammond did not ' stay Jong enough to get us accustomed to his peculiar stylo and method; I be lieve it has been notorious of lrim that people are not at first pleased but as they come more in sympathy with his efforts and are convinced of his earnestness and sincerity, they cordially unite with him.
