The argument for "electing a man in harmony with the Administra tion" is just a little behind the polic ical and moral progress of these time. Democrats, Republicans or Independents do not propose to prostitute themselves to get in har mony with Grant's administration. Harmony" with the Civil Rights bill, the Force bill and the postoffice, express jobbery bill, is not a desira ble position just at this time. Re publican principles are very good and we indorse them them, but they lire the shadow now,while legislation against law and without law, and po litical prostitution and siock jobbery arc the substance. What Heat Failing. , Failing was beaten for Mayor in the Portland citv election last neck by tho whisky and communist vote, and beaten only tix votes at that. The opposition of those tiro elements does him honor. "We think more of Failing beaten than Failing victorious. Failing would make a good Congressman, and if ho would run he would probably poll the full independent vote of the State. We indorse the man who is opposed by whisky men and communists. It is a sure sign that he is a man of integ rity and courage. ,u J)n. F. A. Bailey's address to the graduating class of tho Medical col lege at Salem on the 24th instl is highly complimented by tho State press. The doctor has received a 4M letter from the class asking for a copy of his address for publication and he has complied with the re quest. We havo just received tho cata logue of Willamette University for the college year of 1874-'75. The number of student in tho collegiate classical courso during tho past year were 34; collegiate scientific 15; pre. para tory, 130; academic, 105; medi cal, 25. Whole number of students for the year, 309. Land buyers are numerous in this county now, and real estate is changing hands dai ly. The reason is that Washington county hfts the best lands and nearest tha market for tho least money that can be found any where in the State. Gaunt and Young, passed through Uayfayette last week en route for Eastern Oregon. Three thousand salmon a day have been reported at Booth & Co's cannery, Astoria, last week. The directors are meeting with vcr3' good success in soliciting sub scriptions for the State University at Eugene City. They have only been out a day or so, and have suc ceeded in raising nearly a thousand dollars, and feel confident that the cstiro amount will soon be raised. idgre Notice.
