two weeks. Here in Chicago,
where we raised eight regiments in
one week, this sounds a little queer,

ernor Todd of Ohio raised 40,000
men in two days. That was when
Kirby Bmith was threatening Cin

Ohio who possessed rifles, powder
and lead to meet at their county
towns, organize in oompanies, and
proceed at once to Cincinnati. He
stated that the city was in great
peril, and he appealed to the older
men who owned squirrel rifles and
knew how to shoot, because be felt
that they could make immediate
response and could go into service
ready to shoot.
"The response was a surprise to
even the most sanguine. Old men
and vounir men (fathered by the
thousands, each bringing his squir
rel rifle, bis powder horn, and
pouch of bullets, his haversack
loaded with home provisions, and
his blanket or comfort or quilt
These men were transported in ex
tra trains to Cincinnati, went at

trenchments, and remained until
Kirby Hmith retreated. Not many
of them had a ohanoe to shoot, but
those who did shot at Confederates
as they would at squirrels and
deer, and it was believed that the

negro baby is born in the cotton

the white man. we would be un
grateful to run away and leave
him now, and we are not going to
do it. I was asked the other day
in New York what the negro can
do to get his rights. 1 answered,
'Make himself useful.' His citisen
ship will be recognised and valued
in proportion as he is worthy.
"Industrial eduoation is the key
to the situation. The negro must
keep pace with progressive civilis
ation. The negro must have edu
oation and thnlt, They must know
how to apply their education. We
have enough minister! and profes
sional men for the present.
