Eugene City Guard. BATCBDAT JUNE 13, 1891. A Woman Miner. Jefferson county, Montana, Iim a curioHity in the 1ihik of a mine, not only owned, but orated by a woman. The mine is situated on Willow creek, and the fortunate owner in Mm. KobinHon. Although Bhe is 73 years of age she has done all the work in developing the property herself, carrying out the ore and waste upon her back. ThiB Bho has been able to do from the fact that tho shaft is on a mountain incline and comparative ly easy of ascent. She has been doing this steadily for two years, and apiwars to have lost none of the faith with which she started. If any assay has ever been made of the ore taken out, it remains a Becret with the owner ; but the out side world is very willing to be lieve, from her evident faith, that she has a bonanza. Company 0, Third Regiment, 0. N. G., recently organized at Pendle ton, has been short lived. A meet ing was called for Thursday even ing to elect a captain to succeed C. J. Fraker. resigned, and bo few members appeared that it was de cided to let the militia company go to the "demnition bow-wows." Col. Houghton will accordingly be notified of the company's disband mcnt. This is to bo deplored, as Pendleton will have no protection in case of an Indian outbreak or a Chinese riot. In Australia the government owns the railroads. It only costs a person 1(5.50 to ride 1000 miles thero. Commutation rates for local services aro still lower. A work man can rido to and from his work, a distance of Bix miles for two cents a trip ; 18 miles for 0 cents ; 24 miles for 8 cents ; 30 miles for 10 cont. Yearly tickets, gxxl for 30 mile trips, are sold for 17.40. This is the kind of centralization wo need in this country. It cen tralizes bread and meat in the mouths of tho workingman's chil dren and clothes on their bucks. Tho present prospect aro that Lane county will lie blessed with abundant crops tho present year. Grains and grasses are looking splendid and promise a yield far abovo tho average. Tho price will also be gixxl, a shortugo in Europe being apparent from tho freezing out of winter grain. If tho formid able hop louse will let tho hops alono we may enjoy a full measure of prosiH-rityj ' Do not discourage any homo en terprise. Men aro too apt to grum ble boeauso projects' conceived and Is-ing carried into execution at home aro not as imiuenso or grand as those ut some other city. Tho field of ojK'ration circumscrilws the efforts and ambitions of every man or place. Eugcno cannot exjHvt to rival Portland, nor that place San Francisco, and so on. The atmosphere of the nineteenth century is not conducive to the sta bility of a monarchiul government. Itrazil was tho last country to ac cept this fact. Portugal will be the next. The signs are multiplying daily which show that that country longs for tho free spirit and govern mental system of a republic. The sooner she joins the procession the better. The Hoard of Uailroad Commis sioners are making a move that may benefit their constituent. If they can force the Southern or Union Pacific railroad to give lower rates on freight, the creation of tho Commission will not have been in tain. Heretofore they have nobly drawn the salary attached to the office. The Willamette valley U keeping up her reputation as a sure rain country thli season. The last legislature divided the oflice of county clerk in Union lcounty. Now a test case is being tried as to the legality of the law. Tho Pendleton East Orcgonian says: K. Eakin, J. W. Shclton, T. II. Crawford and Mr. Carroll are in the city from Union to make furth er argument before Judge Fee in the case of the recorder and clerk of Union county. Tho former official commenced a mandamus proceed ing to obtain certain books which the clerk has withheld. The clerk brings a "quo warranto" proceeding to see whether the omce oi couuiy vnnnnler pxisU in law. The action ia a frioniMv nnfi for tllG T)UrtX)SO of a i i j a test. The extent and magnitude of our cm i ntrv becomes more apparent , .. to our minds when teiegrapruc aw m n 1 ! - patches give accounts oi notxts in one section and lorest nres in an- other. Mr. Gould is by no means a modest man. When he does not see what he wants, he very readily asks for it, and it comes. A Bow. About 9 o'olook Tborsdsy mornina while dIsj ln cards.
