Several of our citizens at tended the well advertised foot race, last Saturday at Junction, which was to have been run between Messrs Lewis and Wool ridge for f 250 a side. Mr Amos Kichaidson made articles of agreement this week with Mr Eue Harpole fur a horse rate to be run in this county July 5, 18S4, for 11000 a side. A forfeit if 1100 aside was deposited. The horses are known as the California nisre and the Har pole horsey Suspended The Portland Hesperian, nee the Polaris bos suspended. Its editor, Robert Miller, says he has bought 82,000 worth of xnerienceand sennt nine months very happil. The Yaquina Sails for Yaquina Bay. Sax Fbancisco, May 28. The steamship Yaquina sailed to-day from this port for Ya quina Bay. This is the pioneer trip of the new line which will run regularly cetween tuts city and Yaquina, connecting at the latter dace by rail with Corvallis. The departure of the pioneer boat of the new line occasioned much interest n mercantile circle. The Ya quina carried upon this trip 1200 tons of freight and 125 tons of coal. A few passengers were also on board as invited guest ot Captain Thomas II Morten, who brought the steamer around from New York and was in command. He will leave the steamer at Yaquina, and after observations will return East by the Noithem Pacific railroad to supervise the con striction of two large and fast steamer which are to be built for the new line. . Irving has a population of 52; an increase of 30 per cent in the last two weeks. We will have two blacksmith shops opened here next week. J It Wiseman and family have returned from their trip to Missouri. They have bought property here and will locate permanently. Wiseman says Oreon is worth five of Mis souri. Several went from here to the foot race at Junction. They all decided it a failure and say they will never go to Junction again to witness their sham games, The spelling school at this pla , under the management of John Tait, is attended by a goodly number and quite an interest is mani fest, as we have siellers from several districts, Tait say we will have no spelling this week as he went strawberrylug last Sunday anil got his feet wet, the consequence was he took the worst cold in Irving or any other unincorpor ated town.
