Tim great fraud of 1870 should alword all other issues, ud the rectifying of that wrong would furnish incitement to action. Thi, at least, is the way the advocates of the old ticket argue. It is conceded hy all New Yor" Democrats tlmt if any candidate from the Empire State is to Ir presented to the next national convention it niunt be Tild"ii, hiiiI serious douht is enter tained Ly a large portion of tho Demo- crala whether any candidute I mt Tilden could he sure of carrying tho State, but would Tilden accept! This is the uestiin that continues to he aided hy many who havo read the account of Watterson's visit to Oreyatone, And who ata not a warn of the c1iaii"i that ins coiiih over the dream of the sag", tnd which has been wrought, as his iends say, hy an entire clung in the ntuition. Your correspondent interviewed on old and intiinatu friend of Tilden as rollows: "You are awaro that a wido discus- inn lei arisen as to Mr. Tilden's wil- ngness to undergo (lie strain of a 'residential content. What do you think are his own convictions! "I wm satisfied he views his ptiMic career as a matter absolutely in con trol of public decisin i that lie will acitly ahide the event of rennmination. In regard to the .idea of excessive strain Ujin his physical condition, he has been fully prepare.! for any contin ency of this kind, not merely hy his rapid restoration to health and vigor, hut hy his changed relations to such a campaign, should it occur. At one time, not long since, even his immediate followers Abandoned the idea of his further leadership and went to seek tln-ir fortune iu other direc tions. Many of them are now srine what alarmed at the prospect of his re nomination, as they have it set up for themselves, or have joined adverse, in terests, Sut that Tilden will reepond iu the affirmative to a proper demand by his party and the people there is not a particle of doubt It is also his con viction that the tint ', opportunity and necessity for his identity with a wovo ment for reunminatiou of the ticket which was (leuted by the people but denied by their tribunals in 1876 is now at hand. The recent course of Ifeudricks has perha s t;iven this idea more positive vitality than it seemed to have a few months Ago. The refusal of Hendricks to recognize this histori cal justice, as well as the popular expe diency of the renoniiuatioii of the old tii ket by the last Democratic conven. tion, caused the nomination of Han cock nu 1 liegot. failure for that experi- (From th N. While Mr. Jaiiifs was collecting eyidence of the ring's work, and cut' ting oft the fraudulent service which Drndy had erected, tfu dismissed chid of the ring was busily throwing up iff trenchineiits behind which lie proposed to defy the law. At the outset h bought three Washington newspapers, and lilt) rlv fought in theni the admin-., i (ration And all who engaged in t he- work of uncoteriug Ids offenses, ' - The annual pay for a useless route in the Indian Territory was raised from (0,330 to 1.V),000. The msil Amount ed to two letters a month which, a soli tnry horseman carried over the wild prairies. The annuaf pAy for four routes in Oregon, in the indictments recently tried, was raised in this waj from U6.732 to 164,189. The testimony of Price) who held thirty tlx routes, upon six of which ha secured "expedition" that raised the annual pay (ruin $48,070 to $109,813, aim wi.o nuu rien contract couiu nos , be more explicit. He taught his Hex tin hliowaiKi's" by lurge bribes, paid io postal drafs ill one case to Senator Kel- ligg, And to ilraily. Links hein and there have Wen supplied by other Usti iiiony, and the chain is complete, The service in nine Western and Southwestern States nnd nine territo ries was let at the beginning of the term for $2,1)00,280 per annum. In, these states and territories wore the rings route. In one year Brady raised the pay far this service to $5,700,997,. mainly by "extra allowances" to ring Oiitraclors, amounting to $1,700,000 per annum. In the first half of the second year he added almost $800,000' more to tho inemWs of the ring, and gave them "temporary contracts," with out competition, which yielded nearly $1,000,000 a year, many temporary routeB lioing useless. The baker's dozen w ho, with Brady composed tho ring, were bleeding the treasury by frauds that were notorious. On only 415 routes held by these men and their representatives Brady added 2,09."),53i to the annual pay, raising that pny from (1,202,503 to (3,307, 703, And at the same time decreasing the number of n ib-s on which the mails were cirried. The inquiry was narrowed until it related to ninety- three of these 413 routes, and it was found that tlm Annual pay for the ninety-three routes had li-en raised by the addition of nearly $2,000,000, from $702,838 to $2,723,403. These figure! show how the frauds were limited to a comparatively small numUr of routes, and (hat nearly one-half the annual ap propriation was given by IVady to only thirteen out of a lare body of contractors. These thirteen were di vided into several groups, each group having its agents and its lines of influ ence. The members of one of these groups who were lead by a Senator of the United States and a powerful poli tician, have been on trial (with Brady) and have been acquitted. This group's share of tho "extra allowances" waa nearly $500,000 a year. True Pizm. Arkansas Traveler.
