TUn I HHUAL Of UStfUl RECEIPTS fntX Tariff sad Wool, Recent years it lias been a favorito policy with Repulilican politicians to create an itnprctwion or ljclief in tho minds of the populaoo Uiat the tariff is not to be considered an a party issue, hut a mere local question, and at tho same time muko cnjiital for themstlves by individuals promising a protection for some local industry. This was tho course pursued hy Congressman George in his recent canvass in Oregon; who in a stereotyped speech promised tho farmers of this Stato to maintain n protection on wool that would keep out of competition the cheap wools of Aus tralia and South America. ' That ho went squarely hack on that promise is evidenced by tho present low price of wool, and the fact that a Republican Congress passed a tariff bill reducing the tariff on wool, and at the same time increasing tho tariff on manufac tured woolen gooda This bill catches tho, wobl.gfowcra of Oregon both ways. It not only (ecrtweB, thn price of his wool but increases tha prico of woolen goods which lie is required to buy. What he has to sell is ct't down and what ho has to buy is increased,, in price, llus was done by a Republican Congress and that, too, after the wool growers of Oregon had been promised a protection l y Mr. George. We are le to comment upon this matter from tho fact that some of the Republican street politicians in and around Roseburg havo been dishonestly representing to farmers that tho decline in wool is caused by the Domocratic policy of freo trade. No statement can ho further from tho truth. Tho tariff upon wool has novor been equal to what it would bo under the Democratic policy. . An. honestly adjusted advolo- rum duty for the purpose of revenue only, would "amount to moro than 25 per cent abovo tho average tnrriff yjion that commodity for the last twenty years, under a protective policy, as the liguros will full demonstrate. Upon fin honestly adjusted tanti for revenue only, tho wool growers of tho country would, during tho last twenty years, have received an annual protec- ion of twenty-five per cent above what they have received from tho Republi can policy; amounting to five hundred per cent more protection than has been accordt d to thnm. On tho other hand they havo been robbed in more than uublo that amount during the same period, b (ho dishonest policy of pro tection and compelled to pay an aver- ago of more than fifty per cent per an num ton tho ri!angfac, tured articles which they consume, over and, above what it would have cost thhm uiutyran honestly adjusted tariff for revenue only, A tariff for the purpose of reve nue will afford sufficient protection to any of our industies and a much greater benefit upoh tho agricultural interests of the country than that ruinous and dishonest policy of protection, which legislates tho hard earnings out of the pockets of tho producer and consumer into the coflVrs of the rich manufactur er and common carrier, wfmm it aicr.o benefits at tho expense of tho whole people. '. r . i . Twenty-five yearg ago more than seventy-five per cent of American com merce, was r,arri(d in American vessels under American canvass, with the glorious Star Spangle Banner flying from tho mast-head. With twenty years of a Republican protective policy li-ss than sixteen per cent of our own products are carried in American ships as shown by the official statistics, while more than sixty-five per cent is carried in English vessels with the English Jack nailed to tho mast-head. By this ruinous policy our people have been driyen out of competition for tho carry ing of our own products, and our flag virtually from the high seas. A tax for any other purpose than revenue is dishonest and ruinous to the laborer an consumer, and espec ially to the great agricultural interest in which tha majority' of our people are engaged. July 20th, AlfreJ lAnderson, who cruelly murdered his Arothej last Octolier, paid the penalty cl Iti.ii crima by hanging. Tho execution as con ducted in an orderly manner in the presence of somo three hundred specta tatora Before tho commencement of tho solemn sceno, Sheriff Sears politely requested those present to alistain from any demonstrations of any kind, An derson ascended the scaffold with firm step, and throughout the entiro' pro ceeding preserved a stolid firmness which was remarkable. In a speech of Eon'ic fifty minutes' length, he denounced the jury winch had, convicted him ana declared there was no ovj di-uco upon which to hang him. lfe assorted, that he was an innocent man, but in wm noticeable in all his remarks that ha did not say in direct language, "I did not kill my brother." A special re porter of the Welcome who sat upon the scaffold within thrcfr feet of the condemned man, closely watched every movement and noted . each sentence. He is decidedly of the; ('pinion that Anderson was guilty. VV'htlo profess ing to have faith iu the saving powers of religion, (lis action was not devout or spiritual, in any particular,;,.. While tho ministers were , reciting jheir ,)ast prayers the prisoners eyes word- wide open and roamed nervously around. Tho only moment iu which Anderson seemed to be alTecteJ was when the Rev. Mr. Larsen referred in ths Scan dinavian to guo to tho prisoner's father and mother. Tears came to his eyes, but as if feeling shame at this ex hibition of human grief, he hurriedly brushed them away. . Anderson' examined tho jiofisoiwitH careful hands and slipped .the, knot tip, and down several times as if testing its practlcq,biliiy.., lie then,, tpak his po sition upon tho trap, allpwing his limbs to be pinioned with a tremor, and fell saying, "Tho Lord Jesus savo " Death, was instantaneous, his neck boing dis located by the fall, . .... Sheriff Scars performed - his , duty, with great calmness, but a ploso.spocta, tor could see that ho was visibly affoot- ed by tho, tanlc. After springing the fatal trap lie turned his gaze from ,the unfortunate man and would not witness his death agoniea , i 1 Thus, once more, is justice meted put; to the transgressor of..MturBs.ymootf sacred law. The claim for damages is based on a ma licious attack which appeared in the Polaris a few months ago, charging Mr. Morris vith dishonesty in the matter of awarding contracts on the railroad.
