After an extended tonr through Clacka mas county I think 1 have stn enough of it to give you an idea of what kind of a county we nave ana the uaturo of its population, its yield of crops, etc. Dur ing my progress through the county I kept my eyes and ears open and although a man with a threshing machine is not ovorburdoned with much leisuro timo, still I have had an opportunity to gain a little insight into the domostio life of many of the inhabitants of Clackamas couuty. fJJackamas is one of tho larg est and best timbered counties in the State. In fact, it labors under the dis- Mr. Marrowfat had been complaining of nervousness, aud declared that of late he felt so bad that any excitement was most distressing to him. One day be asked the family physician what he would take for it. "Is it noise that chiefly troubles you?" "I think it is," said Mr. Marrowfat. "Very well," said the astute and sympathizing Galea, "put a spoonful of paregorio in your wife's coffee every morning." He had been the boy of the office: the lowest one in rank about the concern. and when he was promoted a notch he was as pleased as an actress with a bono uet shedidn t pay for herself. They asked him about the change. "No," said he, "my work isn t easier. It s meaner, too. and the sniarv isn t raised any to speak of. C. Coffin has figured out that New Hampshire produces bread enough to feed her population twenty-eight days. Massachusetts furnishes enough for one day, and Rhode Island did not raise nough to give ail her people a breakfast. The dog looks sick. He has been cel ebrating the Fourth of July. There is a Bunch of Fire Crackers Tied to his Tail; also a Tin Dipper. The Dipper does not seem to bother him as much as the Fire Crackers. He is wiihing it was Christmas. We fear he is not a patriotic dog. The experience recorded by a Brighton season-ticket holder is unfortunately by no means singular. The lawless eel Hsu ness of certain specimens of the daily railway traveler is one of the things that show how thin is the veneer of civilization even in the classes that would be most offended if they were called barbarous. The correspondent attempted to enter several compartments where there were vacant seati, but they were all "kept" by a newspaper or an umbrella, and he was politely turned out. "noticing a num ber of other gentlemen coming down the piattorm in the same predicament, look mg in vain for Beats," continues the writer, "I returned and resolved to take the first unoccupied seat I could find. entered a carriage in which there were three empty seats, but was immediately assailed by a volley oi abuse from the three gentlemen already seated, saying it was a private carriage into which l had no right to 'force' myself; that I was no gentleman and must turn ont. I mildly remonstrated, explaining that I had en tered the compartment without noticing the small card placed in the window, and stated that there was no more room in thd train, upon which I was told that it was a 'downright falsehood' by one gen tleman, and by another a' lie.'" these selfish gentlemen-roughs are only acting according to the law of their kind, but one asks: Where was the station master, where the inspectors? It is they who are responsible, and they ought to be made to feel that they are so. A daily railway journey is now the fate of many thousands of people who pour into Lon don to their business every morning, and yet there is no claw, for whose com fort so little is done. If any one wishes to see the abject confusion into which onr "practical English race is capable of falling, we commend him to pay a visit any afternoon, from live o'clock to half past six o'clock, to the dismal shed whence the Southwestern Railway Com pany dispatches its passengers along the Loop Line. As a specimen of official helplessness, uncertainty, self-contradiction and general disorganization, it is bomplete. Fall Mall Gavette, , parta it requires years of unceasing toil and untiring exertion to clear enough land to raise a large crop. Notwith standing this objection many sturdy Germans have moved into the timber and beneath their manly strokes the huge tlr trees are foiling rapidly. In many parts of Clackamas there aro scenes of natural beauty that are excelled by no other section in tho United States. It is well supplied by many silver stcumlets which meander down from their sources in the mountains and are alive with speckled trout, salmon and other fishes The black bear, cougar, covote and sov eral other oniu.als are also to be found in plenty and a deer hunt is an everyday institution in some parts of the county. One of the best bear hunters in the county is Tom Boving of Damascus. Tom has slain bears without end, but his last encounter with bruin was a close call. He succeeded iu vanquishing the bear. nowever, and Drougai home one of his claws us a trophy. ihe nght between him and the bear oc curred after dark, one wet night, and immediately thereafter he was afflicted with terrible rheumatic pains. One of his neighbors suggested that his limbs be rubbed with that old and reliable rem edy, St. Jacobs Oil, and. he experienced instant relief. Since then there has been no day that this remedy has not occu pied a conspiouous place upon bis man tel piece. His brother, C. H. Boving. who lives a few miles from him, also keeps it in bis family, and lauds it to the skies on every occasion that he can. The density of the tirsbor in this locality where they live renders the atmosphere very moist, and rheumatism is quite prevalent in that neighborhood. I have had occasion to travel much in my own vicinity, and cau cito fifty of my neigh bors for miles around who, year in and year out, keep a bottle of St. Jacobs Oil constantly on band. Living remote from town, and not knowing what mo ment an accident to one of the family might happen, or some of the cattle get lamed, nearly every farmer very wisely keeps a bottle on his mantel. They promptly replace the bottle with a new one every time it is emptied Among others whom I can mention in this locality as having implicit reliance and uuswerving faith in the merits of St Jacob's oil are M. Meaning John Martin, F. Revenue and a host of others. Mr. Revenue, whose store is the hrst stopping place the emigrant halts at this side of the Cascade mountains, keeps it in stock right along. Whenever a farmer happens to meet with an accident or gets bruised in any manner, tho first remedy that it invariably applied is St. Jacob sUil. ' v Uncle John Martin, a near neighbor, was connned to his bed for over two years. He had the best med ical attendance that Oregon could supply, and yet no relief was afforded him. To day the old gentleman, who is over Beventy years of age, is hale and vigorous, and attributes his rescue from death in no smt.ll meas ure, to the wonderful ellicaoy of St. Jacobs Oil. This part of our county is settled mainly by countrymen of my own (Germans) and it is with no small degree of pride that I preceive the rapid ad vances of civilzation that are being pustied forward by them. In every Ger man family thatoomes out here you will invariably find as a part of their lug gage one or more bottles of the inevita ble St. Jacobs Oil. As for myself I think thft my own experience will not prove uninteresting. I was out hunting about eighteen months ago and in at tempting to cross over a fallen log I full and hurt my leg. I discharged my gun several times to attract the attention of my comrades but they did not come to my rescue. A heavy shower come ud and I was wetted through before assistance arrived. My wound was attended to and I recovered from that nicely. But my exposure to the storm resulted in a severe illness: my entire frame was racked with intense pain, and my joints were immensely swollen. Having been relieved years ago in the East by St. Jacobs Oil, I be thought of the remedy and roc u red it and it afforded me marvellous re lief since then. I have recommended the remedy to hundreds and they have all used it with much success. Among others who have csed this remedy in this county are J. W. Taylor, New Era; Gottfleid Wallars, Postmaster, Highland; David Zimmerman, Needy; Jacob Wolf, Needy: J. F. Dibble. Mo- lalla; Chas. Wade, Marshfield; J. Welch.Damascns; John Mitchell.Sandy; and over one hundred others whose names I cannot nojr recall.
