This tribunal lias been in session
for several Jays, and thus far rumors,
inferences and suspicions, such as aro
always bad in a heated contest, aro

the majority seem intent to give color
to tho necessity of the commission,
which they can only do by gathering
the wild rumors and baseless suspic

Grover obtained his election by fraud
or other disgraceful means, none will
be more gratified by his exposure and
punishment than we. lint that the
people should bo Imrlhcned with the
cost of proceedings to gather only the
exhalations and loul vapors emitted
by the healed discussion, petty in
trigues and vague suspicious, always
the accompaniments of political imil
personal contests, seems most incx

Ed. Guard i It was my misfortune to be
born before the era of railroads, telegraphs,
sowing machines and agents generally.
I learned to write with a quill pen and to
plow with a wooden mold-board "instru
ment," when flint-lock fire arms, honest men
and home-made goods were common ; there
fore I may be excused for not being able to
see the necessities of our times as agents see
them.
I never made a plow, but I have used sev
eral kinds, beginning with the Carey and in
cluding the "Moline," Peoria ltounder, a
half dozen patterns of home-made articles,
aud eliding with the "Garden City Clipper."
It may be worth while to say that the Moline
plow I used tweuty-seven years ago was not
a "John Deere" sheet iron humbug as known
in Oregon, but the best plow probably ever
made by man the "Peoria plow" did mag
nificent work twenty years ago, but it may
have been counterfeited out of use or degen
erated for all I know. Modern "improve
ments" iiuplows have nearly made them use
less as well as worthless. . With this intro-
luction, permit me to answer Mr. Cleaver,
agent for the "Garden City Clipper" in Eu
gene City, who seems to be angry because I
expose the faults of his wares, a liberty which
I have always enjoyed and generally exer
cised, and I am sure he cannot find more ob
jections to my statements than I do to hi
"Clippers.
He says I wrote in regard to "Garden City
Clipper plows." I did not, as reference to
my communication will prove at once they
are not plows, at least No. 19J are not they
have some appearance of plows, but they are
no improvement upon the "instrument" in
dited by Tubal Cain and used by "Kings
and the awful fathers of mankind," when the
Chaldeans lay upon the ground and arranged
the constellations in the heavens. The
plows, so called, imported when Cortez sub-
ugated Mexico, were probably not as ele
gantly finished as the ''Clipper," but were no
doubt equal to it in honest service J for be it
known my hands have never held s plow of
so little utility as a Garden City Clipper.
But agents are truthful (?) people, very
honest (?) and their business is to. sell for a
per ccntago of the sales ; for instance, they
sell a seven dollar plow for twenty dollars,
and a twenty dollar sewing machine for 85 to
(10 dollars, aud only get thirty per cent, for
selling tlicin, or five dollars for selling a plow
and twenty-five for selling a machine, aud so
in proportion for every article sold by agents.
An honest Moliuo plow used to sell for a dol
lar an inch in Iowa, Illiuois aud Missouri,
but hero a twelve inch G. C. C. sells for nine
teen dollars, a dollar and nearly sixty cents
an inch, aud then they aro not plows ; the
agents may be indignant because it is their
biisince.i to cheat but as I have been cheat
oil, I hope to save others from a similar ex
perience whether agents liko it or not; iu fact
I ain writing for the benefit of tho public and
not to pleaso agents, cheats and swindlers,
who live at case whilo the poor farmers pay
the piper.

that is all a mistake, as I had no liberty to
return the Clipper, the agent from whom 1

1 told him afterward, if he would present me
a wagon load of his "Gardcu Oily Clippers,"
I would not haul them home to plow with,
he failed to explain what chances I had to
have luy money refunded. Your city agent
is a stranger to me, yet I know him by his
deeds aud wares, consequently my name can
be ul no earthly use to him since he can kuow

The Mercury says : Dr. McCauley, the phy
sician who attended ujxin Alice Townsend and
administered her the dose of medicine a short
time previous to her death, has been arrested
and lodged In jail His examination, we are
informed, will take place on Monday before
Justice Jol nson.
The Coos Bay News says that a fine vein of
coal has been struck in the Henryville mine ICO
feet below the surface, the shuft is to be sunk
about 90 feet deeper, where the Superintendent
expects to strike another vein, and of greater
thickness. The paospects of getting a paying
mine look more favorable than at any former
time.
The barn of Mr. E. S. Remington, living four
miles southeast from Silverton, was burned on
the afternoon of Sunday last The origin of
the fire is hot certainly known, but is supposed
that it was caused from fire-crackers, since two
neighbor boys were seen firing crackers near
the barn. The lues will fall heavy on Mr.
Remington, as he will hardly have time to re
build before his crop will be ready to put under
shelter.
By the morning train, says the Mercury, four
recruits for the "raccoon brigade" arrived and
were taken to the Penitentiary. Jerry Dunn,
sentenced from Multnomah county for five years
for robbery,- was in charge of George C. Sears.
The others were from Wasco county and were
in charge of Sheriff Crosson. Of these, Collins,
for attempted murder, will do the State service
for live years j Hughes, for perjury, four years,
and a man whose name we did not learn, for
larceny in a dwelling, three years. Sheriff W.
P. Gray, of Grant county, who brought a per
son from his county to the Insane Asylum at
East Portland, accompanied the party to this
city.
Ten Mollie Mnguircs were hanged
June 21st in various towns in Pena
sylvania, for murders committed dur
ing the few years that the nrmy has
been kept in the Southern States to
protect thieves and ccuduct elections.

exerted to make political capital out
of them; but as Pennsylvania was a
Radical Northern Siate, it was left to

The telegraph brings the news of
four more murders, by the Mollie
Maguires, in Pennsylvania, since the
execution of ton of their brethren
June 21st. If these statements are
true the condition of society in that
State is worso than it has been in the
South, where tho army had to ''keep
tho pence." But experience incliues
us to believe that tho Irish citizen

There will be trouble now; Gen
Howard lias but about eight hundred
men within reach, and it is doultfu

with provisions at a cent a pound.
Mr. E. V. Smalley, of the New
York Tribune, has been in Florida,
and interviewed Governor Drew ol

ing: "Florida is getting on very
well under the new order of thing!.

experiment. Next day they are taken
from tho boiling water and a small

or longer than the first lime.

correct deed to real property.
To the above named defendant, Mounterrille
Fergeson : In the name of the State of Ore
gon, you are hereby required to appear in the
above entitled suit, brought against you by the
aliove named pluintitf, in the Circuit Court of
the State of Oregon, for Lane county, and to
answer the complaint filed therein by the first
day of the next regular term of said Circuit
Court, to be begun and holden at Engene City,
Lane county. State of Oregon, on Monday the
5th day of November, 1877. The defendant
will take notice that if he fail so to appear and
answer said complaint, as above required, the
plaintiff will apply to the Court for the relief
therein demanded, as follows, to-wit :
That a certain deed made, executed and de
livered to plaintiff by the defendant, on the'
second day of March, 1858, be reformed and'
made to conform to the intention of the parties
thereto, by a decree of said Court, so that the'
description of the premises contained in the
said deed, read as follows, to-wit s Beginning at
the N. E. corner of the S. 4 of section 30, Town..
lo 9., it. o west ; running thence north Mi
rods, thence east 26 rods, thence south 214l
rods, thence west 26 rods, thence north 161
rods, to the place of beginning. Also the S. E..
Jof section 30, Town. 16 S., R. 3 west Th
above described premises beim? parts of claimi
No 57, notification 3027, containing 200 acrts
more or less, in Lane county, State of Oregon.
That plaintiff have judgment for the costs and
disbursements of this suit against the defend
ant, and have such other and further relief aa
the Court may deem equitable.

said Court, made and of date June 25th, 1877.

in the Eugene City Guard, a weekly newspa
