The studied silence with which the Oregonian and popu lists now regard each other is tooSt 'oppressive, indeed. It was only -a few short months ago that "a most bitter warfare raged between these two forces. The Oregonian, with It's accustomed 'Vieorand spirit, filled it's col- UtttBS to overflowing with the most bitter denunciations of the entire populist fraternity, and anarchists, socialists, red-handed -riotors. dvnamiters were some of the vigorous epithets which . 3ckrtland's great daily heaped up- cn the heads of the luckless pop ulists. But they were equal to the occasion and their newspa pers and public speakers replied in kind, calling the Oregonian a fit representative of the pluto cratic press, the monopolists' henchman, the trusts' defender, the swell-headed man of the tower aud dozens of other equally as contemptuous . references. But those bloody days are past . and no more will Brother Scott be compelled to lay awake nights listening for the populist mob bent on r tearing down his high and costly tower; neither will the lowly but strong-lunged pop ulists have to dodge around the corner to avoid the ponderous and deadly editorials which the Oregonian has been hurling at their hapless heads. The din and noise of battle is over and sweet, blessed peace now reigns over this land of Oregon. A debt of gratitude of ML Hood dimensions is due from the peo ple of this stats to Messrs. Si mon and U'Ren, for to them is due the honor and glory of stop ping this fratricidal war, which has for so long brought only trials and troubles and political death to so many worthy pluto . crats and populists. May the - followers ofrthese two warrior statesmen rise up and call them - blessed. Oregon City Enter prise. Kincaid has employed two lawyers to represent his peculiar views in the courts, with the un derstanding that they 4 'are to look to the legislature for their pay. and are not to ask more than $oo each for their services. They will doubtless be kept look- , ing. ' Kihcaid has no particle of authority for . saddling such an expense on the state, nor for ig noring the attorney general, who was chosen by the people, to be the legal advisor for the state. Any man with common sense knows thatrthe position assumed by Kincaid in regard to the com mission and various omces, is un tenable, and in a legal contest the state is sure to be beaten. No 'matter how much we may desire the repeal of the law creating the railroad and other commissions . there but one way to do it. and that is by direct act of the legislature. No one believes in Kincaid's pretended devotion to economy. He is simply a very expensive fraud. Abusing the Oregonian, is pleasant occupation, and some times it needs abusing. Often nowever, the condemnation is really absurd, and ponderous ex . pressions, intended to awake in dignation, call forth only smiles. The Washington Hatchet, last Friday, flew in frenzy over the following Oregonian editorial: "Members of the Grand Army, who participated in the first bat tle of Bull Run, can fully sym pathise with the Greeks after the fall of Larissa," and calls it a conteinprable insult to the "boys in blue." Does the insult lie in the suggestion that our old sol diers are capable of sympathy, or in the inference that they would have preferred a different termination to the first battle of iBull Run? The First National bank, of Pillsboro, an institution doing a large and profitable business, has dosed and the stockholders are operating a private bank instead. Ou;r populist friends will hardly . claiai that the stockholder made the. change because they were grostig rich too fast. - Will they continue to believe that Na tional fcanks make enormous profits from their circulation? The truth is, a bank pays for all the advantages -it may enjoy by reason of its being under na tional control, and organizes as a juat'i'onal bank for the sole pur pose .of attracting: custom. Mr. H.
