In another column appears an article from the San Francisco Chronicle, bearing upon the grain industry of the Pacific coast. The outlook is most discouraging to farmers, and gives the lie to dem ocratic campaign oTators who went about the country two years ago telling the people that under a free trade policy the grain grow ers of this country would receive Jlflterjmces for their crop. One of the steeug arguments used against.lhe republican principle" o( protection was that the grain,.fleeU came hefe each season in ballast, whereas Siwder free trade these 'snips would.', come freighted with cheap Eur6pean goods and return loaded wi thj wheat, f fitis-saving. ,to . the farmersVat least one-half of the cost of transportation. But the scheme failed to work. In stead of the United States having the world for a market, the world has found a market for its products in the United States. Our exports have steadily decreased in volume while more than a proportionate increase has been shown in our imports under democratic control. The prices for wheat during the past two years has been the low est known, and farmers are realiz ing to their sorrow that the demo cratic campaign cry of ''Cleveland and dollar wheat," was a delusion and a pnare. Senator Mric-HBLL voiced the sentiment of every true American, Tuesday evening, when lie said that if he could have his way about it every loreigner coming into this country should remain as long as he did before being al lowed lo vote. There is too much looseness in our naturalization laws lor the good of the country. and the sooner they are amended so as to shut off the voting of the illiterate class who come to our shores, the belter and purer will be our election. It cannot flo otherwiso under the present order of tilings. - "And now the remedy the farmers must grow diversified crops, if they would con tinue in business. I know of ranches around Salinas, a few years ago a source of constant loss, now making their owners rich by sugar beets. Surely this is not the only poition of the state that will grow sugur beets. "We import annually 100,000,000 worth of sugar lrom Germany. Why not grow thoso .beets in America? - "I know it is hard for a man to turn his back on what he has looked upon as the only means of legitimate farming, but he must look the matter square in the face. Let him follow the tips and downs, and it is all downs now, of. wheat farming. Last spring I thought the yield of wheat was go ing to be enorniou. It was calculated at lyiOO.OOO tons, lint north winds in the Sac ramento and rust in the San Joaquin valley did thi-ir deadly work, and the yield was about half this amount. This is nn instance of -the vicissitudes of wheat farming, aside from low prices and a prospect of them be coming still lower." Wheat farmers will find little consolation in a statement of the coudition of tlio grain industry of the state made public yesterday by tho Granger's bank of this city, says the San Franciico Chronicle. This statement consists in part of a table of comparative prices of grain at Port Costa for the last thirty years. The figures show that there has been a remarkable decrease in the price of wheat during that time, a decrease so great that it would seem to portend that the wheat ranchers of the coast must turn their atten tion to new fields of effort if they would con tinue in business. "These figures," said A. Montpelier, cash ier and manager of the Granger's bank, "have a moral that every wheat-grower in this state should give ear to. They sound the warning that the', wheat industry of this is doomed. It is idle to eny that the price will come up, and good times are yet in store for the wheat raisers. The issue must be met squarely, it is either a change of crop or inevitable bankrupcy. I know people say the depression in price is only temporary, due to the general financial unrest the world over, but I submit the figures as a silent, but to my mind, convincing refutation of such a statement. "If anyone will take the trouble to study the table and do a little thinking on the side lor himself, thetrue cause of the hard times among farmers wil l become apparent at once. Wheat is selling tday at 90 cents per cental at Port Costa 5. Deduct ..transport Viavi Remedies the Only Cure Viavi Tabloids are a sure care for all Stomach Trouble.
