Chronicle, bearing upon the grain
industry of the Pacific coast. The
outlook is most discouraging to
farmers, and gives the lie to dem
ocratic campaign oTators who went

ers of this country would receive

Wheat farmers will find little consolation
in a statement of the coudition of tlio grain
industry of the state made public yesterday
by tho Granger's bank of this city, says the
San Franciico Chronicle. This statement
consists in part of a table of comparative
prices of grain at Port Costa for the last
thirty years. The figures show that there
has been a remarkable decrease in the price
of wheat during that time, a decrease so great
that it would seem to portend that the wheat
ranchers of the coast must turn their atten
tion to new fields of effort if they would con
tinue in business.
"These figures," said A. Montpelier, cash
ier and manager of the Granger's bank,
"have a moral that every wheat-grower in
this state should give ear to. They sound
the warning that the', wheat industry of this
is doomed. It is idle to eny that the price
will come up, and good times are yet in store
for the wheat raisers. The issue must be
met squarely, it is either a change of crop or
inevitable bankrupcy. I know people say
the depression in price is only temporary,
due to the general financial unrest the world
over, but I submit the figures as a silent, but
to my mind, convincing refutation of such a
statement.

the table and do a little thinking on the side
