The Oregon immigration edition of the
La Grande Chronicle came to hand Wednes
day. It is a nine-column quarto chock lull
of advertisements and replete with de
scriptive matter evidencing in strong terms
the enterprise of the business men of that
community, which will undoubtedly re
dound to their adyantage. This number of
the Chronicle is the best newspaper speci
men we have yet seen in the state, and the
energy of its publishers is deserving of
marked success, while the public spirit of
the business men of that city is commend

Newton Hamer, son of Mr. and Mrs. O
B. Hamer, of Summit died at his father's
residence Tuesday morning, Oct. 3d, at the
age of 21 years. Heart disease was the sup
posed cause. On Monday he was about the
house and seemed to be feeling quite well,

Ernest Williams is now languishing in
the county baatile under Sheriff Osburn s
cire. - He was wautea by cne aucnonues
for stealing a horse from Mr. E. Maude, on
William Kitridge's place last August, and
was recently captured by a Lane county
deputy and delivered to our sheriff at
Eugene Wednesday morning, The prison
claims to have botight the horse from a
band of gypsies.
HOTEL CORVALLIS VACATED.
The Hotel Corvallis is once more vacated,
Mrs. Armstrong having moved out and into
her new cottage in the northern part of the
city. Although Mrs. Armstrong's lease
was not up for a month longer she found it
like the Oregon Pacific, not a payiug con
cern, owing to lack ' of business and to the
fact that the unfinished conditiou of the
building exposed the midnight siumberer to
the elements of this webfoot weather. The
hotel is now the property of the Coryallis
Hotel Co., and will be occupied by Mi!a
Wilkins.
Oue of the subjects which the state press
association should have discussed but failed
was the matter of ''scab" newspapers.
There are several of the scabby sort on our
exchange list that have no right to the claim
of "newspaper," one of which is issued
daily in a little town near Corvallis, and
which persists in clipping matter from our
columns and giving credit to other sources.
The Albany Democrat is the guilty party
and we cannot say that their method is ap
preciated. Better not give credit at all.

orchard work of all kinds, spraying for all
insect pests and fungus, and is pronouueed
invaluable by all fruit growers. Its cost is

Albany Herald : The remains of Mr,
John A. Dean, editor of the Oregon Popu
list, were laid to rest yesterday in the city
cemetery by friends. No relatives were
present to assist in the ceremonies, it be
ing impossible lor tnem to reacn nere in
season. Rev. Mr. Longhbottom, pastor of
the Cumberland Presbyterian church, con
ducted the services and an abundance of
floral decorations were prepared for the
grave.
