The deaf male school at Salem will have 41 inmates. Salem's wharf accommodations are being vastly improved. Pacific university, at Forest Grove, will have about 125 students. Ex Governor James E. Boyd has been visiting Oregon this week. Methodist conference was held at Tillamook Saturday and Sunday. Forty tramps got off the overland train at Grant's Pass last Saturday. Gervais will have races and other out-door sports on Sunday, 'Oct. 15th. Oregon City is paving her streets with vitrified brick of home manu facture. The closing of the Wasco Inde pendent academy is lamented at The Dalles. W. J. Foster, southeast of Pendle ton, harvested 14,1)00 bushels of wheat. The Albany cantilever bridge is be ing tightened up for the high water strain. Juds:e Riddle, the Southern Oregon fruit-grower, will have 200,000 pounds of prunes. Parke k Lacy have sued the As toria & South Coast to pay for a lot of railroad ties. The Commercial bank of Portland opened for business at the usual hour Monday morning. Salem's current street assessment notice makes three and one-half col umns of small type. Mrs. McDonald, the old woman as saulted in Columbia county, cannot live more than a day or so. The woolen mill at Albany has re ceived a Contract froiu Philadelphia for 4,000 U. S. army blankets. O. H. Page, the new collector of customs at Astoria has 276 appli cations for positions under him. VV. L, Ward threshed an average of 18 bushels per acre from a large field of volunteer wheat near The Dalles. It is said that the celebrated Linn county breeders, Barrows Bios., are going to move their business over into Polk. Geo. Miller, of Eugene, expects to have his akycyle perfected in time to fly to San Francisco for the mid winter fair. Go to the River Front plaining mill of F. J. Objerer for all kinds of turn ing. Ball, of Ballsion, picked .36 bushels of Bartlett pears from one tree. At the price they .have been sel ling at, that tree's fruit was worth $18. Robert Campbell stepped into the cylinder of a threshing machine in Wasco county to avoid a swinging derrick fork, and one leg was crushed instantly. Circuit court at McMinnville con fronted 129 cases. Work will run well over into this week, and the next legislature will likely be asked to pro vide three terms annually. It is not necessary for Nelson Bros, to keep a poet .employed to write up their praises as they still continue to do a good and thriving business at the Occidental shaving parlors and bath rooms. James Bell has begun in the circuit court at Salem an action against the Benedictine fathers at Mt. Angel for $1,500 damages, sustained by reason of alleged fraud and. bodily assault upon him. Dr. H. A. Davis, of Harrisburg, has finished picking jiis hops. The crop is in excellentcondition, better than any during recent years. The yield was over 1,300 pounds to the acre, or 100,000 pounds for the entire yard of 75 acres. ' Bob Hoffman, of Woodburn, is un der arrest at Salem for larceny. He is also behaved to be the man named Frederickson who murdered the Southern Pacific brakeman, Bruce, in the Siskiyou mountains some time ago for which " a reward of $5,000 is of fered jointly by the railroad company and Wells, Fargo & Co. Steps are about to be taken toward the" construction of a fish-ladder at the falls of the Willamette at Oregon City, for which the last legislature made an appropriation of $10,000. Governor Pennoyer and . Treasurer Metschan will make an investigation of the prem ises today, in company with United States Fish Commissioner McDonald. A Grant's Pass .minister received this anonymous communication: "We have heard all we want to hear from you ; either in the pulpit or on the street. Th next time yon have any thing to say about the Chinamen we have ten men who will wait on you and give you a coat of tar and feathers. We will not do with you like they did at Linkvill, burn you on ifega, but we will take it out of your hide." French Canadians are returning to' Canada in large numbers from the New England states. The St. Louis police are dangerous. During the past four months they have killed six people. It will be a year before power on a very large scale can be furnished by the Niagra Fall tunnel. Chicago has but 2,000 of her un employed laborers at work cleaning and repairing her streets. The yellow fever mortality at Brunswick, Ga., is exceedingly light. The cases all seem to be mild. It is reported that hundreds of small pearls have been found in Grand river west of Grand Rapids, Mich. Toronto people are now kicking be cause the street cars run a few minutes after 1 2 o'clock on Saturday night. An agitation is going on in Canada to have the law repealed which al lowed a man to be sent to prison for debt. The Dominion government has pro hibited the importation of dried figs from Smyrna, because of the cholera there. . , Several families of pauper, immi grants have been detected at Mil waukee and will be sent back to Europe. Emperor William is much pleased with the reception the Hungarians gave him at the Austrian army ma neuvers. New York's obelisk is to have a gilded aluminum cap. The monolith is believed to have had a ' gilded top originally. A straight-back steamer left Chicago for Buffalo, last week, with a cargo of 141;500 bushels of corn, the largest of its kind ever carried on the lakes. Secretary Herbert has fixed the Cali ber of the new magazine rifle for the navy at .233 of an inch, the smallest adopted by any of the foreign powers. The electric light has been intro duced into a new flour mill near to the supposed site of Calvary and close to Damascus gate of Jerusalem. - Peekskill, N.
