S3 00 1 0C 75 6c 2 AO The deadly cyclone and the funnel-shaped cloud of the East will now yield the floor to the yellow fever of the South. . , It has cost the people of Illinois $30G,7GS to experiment with demo cratic county treasurers. This is enough to place that state solidly in the republican ranks. t - ' Financially, the Argentine Re public is hard up. The national debt is $330,000,000 or more, the several provinces owe $13,000,000 besides, and the city of Buenos Ayres owes nearly $25,000,000. 1st discussing the federal elec tions bill the democrats are horri fied at the prospect of muskets at the polls, and the republicans express the same horror at the spectacle of shotguns. Washing ton Star. America this year will produce 9,000,000 tons of iron. England's production will be 8,600,000 tons. It is hard facts like these which make the good protectionists re joice, and dismay and demoralize free traders. An Oregonian reporter says the str. Modoc on her last trip could not reach Albany, being compelled to turnback atCorvallis on account of the low water. And yet Cor vallis is twelve miles up the river from Albany. A magazine which soberly dis cusses the theory that the sun is losing its heat and the earth is growing colder, with the result that the human race shall be finally frozen out, is attracting some at tention just now. In view of the iceless winter and the present ele vated condition of the mercury, it will be necessary to put the theory in a patent ice machine to prevent it from spoiling.-New West-Echo. Curious "robberv:" Although coffee and tea are on the free list, no change is observed in their price, especially coffee, while other articles affected by the "robber tariff" have universally cheapen ed. How is this? The parrots that prate that a "tariff is robbery" should pause and consider tin's peculiarity of "robbery" which makes the things of which the pub lic is "robbed" cheaper and more plentiful than the things of which they are not "robbed." States man. A good town is one in which the farmers spend money with the home merchants, the laborers spend the money earned with the local tradesmen; where the feeling and good will of every citizen is in sympathy with home industries, and where every article that can be made or can be had is bought of the local dealers. This is the spirit of reciprocity between busi ness men and merchants, trades men, laborers and farmers, and it makes business lively, the town prosperous, and above all a pleas ant town to live in. Prineville News. The Jacksonville Times, in men tioning the fact of Judge Bean being sworn in and taking his seat upon the supreme bench, pays its compliments to Judge Thayer in this manner: "We are sorry that Judge Bonham was not the fortu nate individual: still the great majority of the people are very Lappy that Judge Thayer steps down and out into merited obscu rity, for he made Oregon's highest legal tribunal the laughing-stock ol the judiciary; of other states and a by-word in the mouths ot all hon est, high-minded people. Vale, Wm. Wallace! You will only be thought of with, derision and contempt.'.' A GOOD A D MINIS TRA TION. It is announced that President Harrison Willi be a candidate for renomination. Ot course he will be and being nominated will be elected. He has made a good president and the second term will be an improvement on the first. During the first half of his present administration, he has made not a few enemies in his own party by iiis refusal to act as hastily as they desired in t he matter of the distri bution of offices, but it will be seen before the expiration of his term of office that he acted so wisely and fairly that even those whom he has offended will be willing to afford him stronger support than before. The Cleveland administration left many questions of serious im portance to be settled by the Har rison administration notably the misunderstanding with Germany over Samoa, and thev have been adjusted satisfactorily and credita bly and with becoming dignity. A misunderstanding with Eng land over Behriug sea has arisen and negotiations are now pending between representatives of that and this country. There is not a person in the United States who does not believe that the matter will reach an amicable sett'eraent. This is because there is such faith and confidence in the adminis- m tration. President Harrison's administra tion during his first four years will not have been a dazzling one, but will be shown to have been a safe and dignified one, just such as the people of this country will want to have conl i n ued . Tel egram. The idea that a western city can not get along without Chinamen is disproved by Tacoma's experi ence. There are no better hotels, restaurants and laundries in the world than in that city, notwith standing there is not a Chinaman within its borders or in the county in which it is situated. The Globe observes: '-San Francisco has 21,- 000 Chinamen. Tacoma has not j one. This city wants a big popu lation, and is obtaining it with a rapidity that is astonishing the world, but it proposes to try and get along somehow without the 'Heathen Chinee.' " o tm There died in Washington a few days since the only man who could have prevented the assassination of President Lincoln. His name wat J. F. Parker and it was his duty to stand by the door of the private box in which the presiden tial party was seated and see that only those entitled to do so entered the box. Becoming interested in the play, he moved off some dis tance, and J. Wilkes Booth seized this opportunity to enter the box and execute 'his murderous pur pose. Ex. The silver bill has become a law not according to the original provisions, in favor of free-coin- re but a compromise measure between this and the ideas of Sec retary Windom on the question. We hope this will silence contro versy on this subject in congress, and, if the tariff bill was passed, the people might hope that some attention would be paid to the river and harbor bill and the for feiture measure.-Times-JMountain-eer. The work of classifying and adding up the census returns is done by machinery. The machines have a keyboard like a typewriter, and look a great deal like one. They are operated by girls, and fifteen girls can count and classify 500,000 names in a day. They re duce the vast work to an easy me chanical operation, in which mis takes are impossible. What a blessing it would have been could the count of the population have been done by machinery. The New York Press notices that whenever the democratic par ty sees itself being carried around to the bottom of the wheel of for tune it yells "Revolution!" CAN'T AFFORD IT. The Philadelphia Press sums up the Behring Sea situation editor ially as follows: Neither the Uni ted States nor Great Brittain can alord to run the remotes risk of a collision over a head of 3,000,000 seals in the Behring's sea. One day's excited rumor would cost a hundred fold more than all the seals in Alaska. The United States has three paths to secure its ends. It can prove that open sea fishing will wipe out the last surviving herd ot seals in the world; it can establish a right to Behring Sea as a "closed sea," and it can claim protection for seals as strayed live-stock, whose property interests vests in the Uni tedStates, because they start from and return to its territor It is the first duty of the government to agree or arbitrate. Nothing is great or small, good or bad,-exeept by comparison. A gentleman named Gohn came to Salem from Johnstown, Pa., some time ago, but became dissatisfied and recently returned to that much-stricken city. The iollow- j mg is an extract lrorn his ing is an extract from his letter after arriving there: "We landed safe and went to housekeeping this week. Johnstown looks rough. ' It don't look like the same place any more. If I was br.ck in Oregon again I would stay. People don't see the dif ference in the country until they come back. It costs more for liv ing here than it does in Oregon. Bent is higher here and most things for living are higher. There will be no fruit here. It makes my mouth water when I think of the nice fruit in Oregon." The prompt action of President Harrison in signing the new silver bill is meeting with approbation on all sides, and the republican party has reason to congratulate " j lp f i : . . ... .1 I. .
