SUBSCRIPTION RATtS lerYoar, -: Sue Months, Tiiree Months - Sfngle Copies - fcsr If ear (when not' paid in advance)... . $2 0C . 1 01 i: 2 50 THE RESULT- The republican. party-in Oregon has fully established Oregon's place as republican state beyond a peradventure. The last general and presidential elections having been more or less affected- by the cry against '"Free Wool," it has been considered, by many that perhaps on a quiet election, such as the one just passed, we might not hold; so great a balance of power;, but the result of Monday's victory emphatically proves that these is no uncertain sound in her pretensions to a place among the elect. Governor. Pennoyer, it is true, has demonstrated that a large element of votes can be gulled and pulled when the effort is put forth to do so and ili is no credit to the republican party that this is the case. Admitting that Simon in liis frantic, sorehead rage knifed Mr. Thompson to the loss of a Targe vote and that the republican candidate lost a large .vote on ac count of the water bill veto and the union party,, the real point seems to, have been that Mr Thompson, is immensely wealthy and voters at the polls will vote against ' wealth,, because they as sociate wealth- and monopolies so closely together that their own discernment tails to detect the difference. This has been unfor tunate for Oregon, because there is a difference between Mr. Thompson and- his wealth and those monopolists who make the poor man's life and work a burden while they enjoy the luxuries of life at the price of his skill and toil: Mr. Thompson's lot has not been cast in such a place and while it is true that he is very wealthy it is also true that his riches are not employed in that manner which deprives our free-born American citizens of their freedom and binds them with- the chains f monopoly. But a republican legislature will be watchful in what it submits to his Excellency in the fyturei This county,, which, was thought to have been republican by 150 or 200 has dropped back into her old place as a "tie" county,, and this result may be attributed in part to the wool tariff issues made, the last two elections and also to the disolution of the prohibition party most of whom, it is conceded, re turned' to the party which gave them birth while perhaps a few drifted into the union party! It s-houldbe remembered in reflect ing on the constituency of .the two latter parties that the principles set forth by each are not synon imous and that while backs1 iders of one ilk constituted; the follow ing of the one; a different ilk, but still backsliders make up the supporters of the other, so that it is not safe to- assume that the pro hibitionists just simply organized under another name. Not. all. The indications are that the pro hibitionists returned to the demo cratic ranks while the union party is supplied principally from dis satisfied republicans. . This would account in itself for' Benton's re turn, to a doubtful countv. The great amount of scratching show ed that there was no -evidence ol an organization on the part of either party but the result tends to show that the party strength on each side was, on the whole, very well maintained. Generally, the result is quite satisfactory to the republican party and while there is regret at Mr. Thompson's defeat there is an abundance of room in which to rejoice over the result in ether respects.. Children Cry for COUNTING THE PEOPLE. - The eleven tK census of the Uni ted States is being- taken in this monthv The census enumerators began their work last : Monday, June 2, and will visit every house and ask questions concerning every person and every family in the United, States. The questions that are asked call for the name of every person? residing in the Uni ted States on the first day of June, with their sex and age and whether white, black, mulatto, quadroon, octaroon, or Chinese, Japanese, or Indian, Inquiry will be made also of every person as to whether they are single, mar ried, widowed or divorced, and, if married, whether married , during the census year. The place of birth of each person, and the place of birth of the father and mother of each person, will also be called for, as well as a state ment as to the profession, trade, or occupation followed and the number of months unemployed during the census year. For all persons ten years of age or over a return must be made- by the enu merator as to. the number able to read and write, and also the num ber who can speak English. For those who can not speak English the particular language or diaiect spoken by them will be ascertain ed. For children of school age, also, the number of . months they attended school will be recorded by the census enumerators. In the case of mothers an inquiry J will be made as to the number of children they have had, and the number of these children now living at the present lima. This inquiry is to be made of all women who are or have been married, in cluding. all who are widows or have been divorced. Foreign born males of adult age, that is, 21 years ot ago- or over, will be asked as to the nunlber of years they have been in the United States, and whether they are natumlized or "hava taken out naturalization, papers. O. the head of each family visited the question will be asked as lo the number of- persons in the family, and whether his home is owned or hired;, also if owned, whether the home is free from mortgage in cumbrance. If the head of the family is a farmer, similar' in quiries will be made concerning the ownership- of the farm. In addition to these inquiries, all of which are made on the population schedule, the law under which the census is taken makes provision for special inquiries concerning such of the population as may be mentally or physically defective in any respect, that is, insane, feeble-minded, deaf, blind, or crippled, or who may be tempor arily disabled by sickness,. disease or accident at the' time of the enumerator's visit. Certain spe cial inquiries will also be made con cerning inmates of prisons and re formatories and of charitable and benovolent institutions. Besides this, a statement will be called for concerning all persons who have died during the census year, giv ing their name, age, sex, occupa tion, and cause of death. This official count of the people comes but once in ten years, and every family and every person should consider, it to be theiriduty to answer the questions of the census enumerators willingly and promptly, so that definite and ac curate- information may be gained concerning the 65,000,000 people living within the bounds of this great country. " . Oregon is one of the greatest wool producing states in the Union'. In fact wool is so plentiful that it :aii be found over the eyes of the majority of the citizens of the state. It was put there during the recent campaign by Governor Pennoyer, and accounts in a great measure for his re-election to office. Telegram. Pitcher's Castoria. TO BENEVOLENT SOCIETIES. ; No organizations in the United. States have .multiplied more rap idly in the past ten years than the sick-benefit, funeral-aid', death- henefit, and other kindred socie ties. As they are generally confined to those who are in the humbler walks of life, the good they have done is incalculable, carrying sub stantial aid to thousands of strick en families and inspiring those who are fortunate enough in being members with a courage which might not exist in their hearts without them. The members of these organiza tions will be glad to learn- that Hon. Robert Pr Porter, Superin tendent of the eleventh census, will endeavor -to secure statistics of .the noble work these associa tions are doing, and it is safe to say that no other branch of the census will be more interesting. The business of gathering the data has been placed in charge of Mr. Charles A. Penney, special agent of the insurance division, 5S William street, New York City, and all associations throughout the United Spates, whether incorporat ed or private, should assist by sending to him the adddress of their principal officers. Last year the revenue from dis tilled spirits andiermented liquors amounted to a little more than the sum paid for pensions to veterans. The taxes of 18S9 on distilled spirits of all sorts were $74,302, 8S7, and on fermented liquors $23,723,S35,. i m That was a hard hit an irrever ent voter gave to a politician who was a strict church member when he said: "You must think more of your politics than you do - of your religion, because you have often asked me to vote for you, and your party ticket, but you have never asked me to join or attend- your church." There is something in this to set some political church-members to think ing. Astorian.
