You never know when you will overtake the section hands. You will be going at the "rate of forty miles au hour; away you go around a curve and you will dash by the boss and hands and have to go back to them. There is alwavs a eood deal of talk over the wages and much time is taken up. The next unpleas ant train to handle is an excursion train. Everv one living alone: the line of road knows you from see ing you come by every day, and they think you know them as well. When on an excursion they pre sume upon their friendship to en deavor to ride on the engine. No other .place will do them. The engineer has to refuse them, as it would amount to docking his wages from thirty to sixty days if he complied, as it is positively against the rules of the road. The person denied the privilege always feels hard about it and looks upon the engineer as unaccommodating The last and the worst of all, how ever, is the officer's train". - If you run slow they say you are scared and fear to run fast. If you make gaod time they say you are care less and reckless and want to kill somebody. You can't suit them." Atlanta Constitution. SHE PASSED AWAY. The following true story is ful of Bathos, but it reveals sucli an odd ignorance of the conventiona meaning of a customary phrase that it will provoke a smile upon the lips ol those who most sincere ly feel the sadness of it. Last winter the wife of a Ver mont farmer came to California broken down with consumption in search of health. She came too late, and though she rallied for a while, never grew- strong again and died a few- months ago. The people with whom she had been staving, telegraphed to the hits band the fateful news, in tlies woi-ds: "Your wife patsed away quietly this morning." A little more than two weeks after, came a telegram lrom the husband say ing: "My wife has not yet arrived at home; do you know anything of her?" The answer was- sent back at once: "Wo telegraphed at the time of the event that your , wife had passed away on the 10th of June." A month after this a gentleman came to San Jose and sought out the sender of the tele gram. It was the husband of the lady who had passed away. He made inquiries about his wife, and not until it was explained to him in straight' Saxon speech did he uaderstand the significance of the phrase and know that his wife was ctead. EXTRAORDINARY HENS. Seth Stevens, a Brookfield, Mass., hatter, noticed that one of his hens was hardly able to walk. He shut her in a coop and doctored her. Ashe continued 'to grow more feeble, yet showed no signs of sick ness, he determined., to kill her. In dressing her for the table he found inside her six perfectly form ei eggs, shells and all, and seven fulhsized eggs -with soft shells. Henry Hoter, of Orange, of the same state, had a hen that walked as though overloaded, and, lifting her, he was surprised at her weight. Being of a curious turn of mind he killed her, performed an autopsy and found twenty-six egg yolks inclosed in one soft shell covering. Each yolk was full size, and lacked only the white to be a perfect egg. The whole bunch was as large as a cocoannt and weighed over three pounds. Louisville Courier-Jour nal. , . " Clilid ren Cry for; A POWERFUL FIRE BOAT. The new fire boat which New York will have next spring will be one of the nautical wonders of the port. She is to. throw four solid four inch streams of watery and the range of these streams will be from 350 to 450 feet solid water, not spray. It is asserted that the firemen can bore through the brick and stone walls along" shore with ease with these streams just as miners in the mountains bore into and wash down the faces of solid cliffs with streams carried' down the mountain sides. To fully comprehend the power of a four- ineh stream it should be remem bered that it is from eight to twelve times as large in cross sec tion as the streams irom t he ordi nary fire engines, while the noz zle velocity of the water is several times greater. The efficiency of such a stream is probably twenty five times as great as the stream from an ordinary engine. The new boat will flood out a fire as with a deluge anywhere within 2,000 feet of the water front. WILL WE WRITE? Will the coming man write? Not at all. . There will be no more need of his learning to write than rf V i cj loorninfr irk em'n W7Vi fin will have become one of the lost arts and a wholly unnecessary art by the time the coming man ap pears. His writing will be aone by the phonograph, which will be placed on his desk as pen3 and ink are now; and whenever he has story, a poem, an essay or a private letter to indite he will simply talk into the phonograph and send on the plate which has recorded his words. The teaching of penman ship w.'ll be unknewn in the schoo of the future, and writing, in the present fashion, will be regarded as much among the barbaric methods as we now hold the rude hieroglyphics of theifncients to be Boston Traveler. AN OLD LOVE -WAGER UNCLAIMED. Samuel Condsf of Christian Hook, L. I., seventy years old, has in his possession $80 depositee; with him as stakeholder. Twenty hve years ago two young men were both suitors for a girl's hand Uue was rich ana the other poor The poor man said he would bet all the money he had in the world that he would win the girl. The total amount of his w?alth was $40, and this he put up. The rich man accepted the wager and covered the $40 with another $40 the stakes being placed in the hands ot Mr. Jonds. he poor man won the girl, but disdrmed to claim the stakes: Mr. Conds has rreld them lor twenty-live years, lie says he will keep the money until he dies unless it is claimed by the winner. N. Y. Tribune. : SHE HAD A BITE. Every one had his or her line over the rail of the boat awaiting a bite, when one freckled-faced gir with auburn hair turned to the young man with a downy mustache and two watch chains, and ex claimed: "O! Augustus, I believe I have a bite." "Then pull in," ' he command ed. "But it may be'a great big fish and he may Dull me into the water." . "I won't let him." "But if he does?" "I will save you or perish with you." "Then I will pull." ' She pulled and brought up a sea robbiu about as big as your finger The peril had passed. We sneered at the catch, but they minded it not. Not until that moment had they daredacknowledge their love. He was her'n and she was Jiis'n, and they were very, very happy as they spit on their bait fr more luck. . Pitcher's Castoria. FOR WOMEN. Susan B. Anthony has 1 written New York, permanent to Mayor Grace, of suggesting that, one building of the worlds lair be set aside to women, for an exhibit of their w.ork. "While the ' men ' of the country," she says, "shall rear temples in honor of Columbus, it will surely be most fittling for the women to celebrate the virtues of Queen Isabella." EDITORIALLY. A DIG IN THE RIBS, If on the right side and lower part of the diaphragm, though playfully meant and de livered, is calculated to evoke'' profanity from a chappy whose liver is out of order. When that region is sore and congested, pokes seem fiendish. Look at a man's coun tenance ere you prod him under the ribs. If his skin and eyeballs have a sallow tinge, you may infer also that his tongue is furred, his breath apt to be sour," that he has' pains not only beneath his ribs, but also, under. the right shoulder-blade.
