The entertainment given by the congrega tion of the Episcopal Church of this city, last Friday evening, at the City Hall, was a very pleasant affair, and clearly demon strates that our English cousins, under the leadership of Mr. ki Mrs. Nash, know how to make a sociable a success financially, nd otherwise. The net receipts of the en tertainment amounted, we understand, to about $160. Pretty good for unpleasant weather. The attendance was large, and the best class of society represented. Nearly .all the ministers, professional and leading business men of the city were present. The evening was so entirely given p to social conversation and a "good time" generally, including an excellent supper, that but a small portion of the literary exercises were rendered, except a most entertaining and amusing reading by Mr. C. J. Hervey Gray. Mr. Waliis Nash presided at the organ, while Mr. Carrick, Mrs. Johnson, and others favored the audience with some very excel lent vocal selections. During the evening the Second Brigarte Band, under the able leadorship of Prof. Miliier, discoursed their choicest pieces. The fine display of photo graphs, paintings, sketches, &c, formed a marked feature of the entertainmeut. The literary and musical portion of the enter tainment, unavoidably omitted on that oc casion, will be rendered at the City Hall, this eveninc free. Evervbodv invited. Mr, Nash's desenntion of travel in Nor- ! rk openini? the road way, illustrated by water-color paintings, will be very interesting. Mr. Hamilton has kindly tendered the use of the Hall free. GOOD TEMPLARS. For the past two meeting nights Excelsior Xodgc, No. 9. L O. G. T., has given way, in consequence of church sociables. There never has been, and we trust never will be, a conflict between the Good Templars of Corvailis and the Chnrjhes. Many pillars in various churches have taken their first step thitherward through some temperance or ganization. Paul preached "temperance" as well as righteousness. For nearly fifteen years Excelsior Lodge has kept her banners -to the breeze in Cm vail is, and most of that time has held regular weekly meetings. To accomplish this graad work has cost much labor and sacrifice of time and money on the part of a few faithfal, zealous workers. No mortal can tell the good that has been accomplished. The reward of these "labors of love" are only expected in the hereafter, Imt it is a satisfaction to feel that we have done our duty to our fellow men, and en deavored to aid in their reformation. The great aim of temperance workers should be to educate the young and save them from yielding to temptation. In order to do this we should make our lodge rooms attractive and pleasant. Excelsior Lodge has a neat hall, and a fine organ, and presents a fine opportunity to the young and ' old for a pleasant social evening, each week. But we need more workers more church membet more ministers more of the parents of Corvallis. Regular meeting at 7:30 this evening. Nomination of offioers for the en suing term. Chenoweth is resident agent for both companies, and will take pleasure in writing you a policy at the best rates. The Republican convention paid no atten tion to Hon. Jas. Chambers' letter in onr last issue. Blade. Of course not. A Republican convention would never go to that source for informa tion relative to the status of Republicans. And, upon sober - second thought, we are confident Mr. Chambers wi'l discover his error and regret that he allowed personal feeling to get the better of his judgment in the matter of letter writing. The Alsea Road. Since the big storm in January, the road over the Alsea moun tain has been almost impassible, in conse quence of fallen timber. The County Court has made an appropriation for opening the road and we understand the Spencer Bros. , living on the South Fork of Mary's river, have the contract for the same. A few Weeks of good Weather will insure a good wagon road over to Alsea. Vocal and Instrumental Concert. The Second Brigade Band, assisted by ama teur talent, will give an evening's entertain ment, at an early date; the concert will con sist of selections by the Band, instrumental quartets, cornet solos and duets, four and six hand pieces on pianos, choruses, duets and solos, The time will be announced by posters. The Band has always been pleased to assist onr religious denominations, fire men and citizens in their entertainments, hence we predict for the boys a crowded house. The proposed entertainment for the bene fit or the Al. is. Church is postponed. Mr. E. Hamer, of this county, lost a fine horse, last Monday night, from bots or colic. A large lot of old type for sale at Gazette o3.ee. It is an excellent substitute for Bab bit metal and much cheaper. The delegates to the State Republican convention, from this county, started for Portland last Tuesday. A large invoice of the finest brands of cig ars and tobaccos just received at Geo. Ger hard's. Last Mondav was a lively day for the Recorder and Marshal. The spring fights have commenced early. A large assortment of all kinds of pipes, cigarette and cigar holders will arrive short ly from England, for C. J. Bishop, Vincent House. Quite a number of our citizens availed themselves of half-fare rates to visit Port land, this week. The Wcstside road is a great convenience. The railroad excursion for the benefit of the Evangelical Church, will take place on the 8th of May. Tickets for round trip only 3 00. Ike Smith, at the lower saw mill, last Tuesday morning, allowed his left hand to come in contact with a saw while in motion, and is minus the end of a thumb. Mrs. Charman, of Oregon City, returned home last Monday, after a few week's "isit with hr parents in this city. Her two sons are attending the State Agricultural College. New and elegant stock of millinery goods just received, at Mrs. E A. Knight's, which will be sold cheaper than they can be bought any where else in the city. S. V. Applegate and family, from Mans field, Ohio, recently arrived in this city. They come to stay, and we are clad to wel come them. Look ont for uncle "Jake" Modi and have your dollar, for poll-tax, ready. He commenced his usual round of assessing last Monday, in the lower portion of theconnty. Marion Ruble, of Alsea, was in the city last Tuesday. He reports a gang of man at le roa 1 over the mauntain between this city and A'sea valley. Dr. (J. A. Whitnev, of Philomath, was called to McMinnville, last Tuesday, on professional business. His family accom panied him. Hon. J. J. Walton, of Eugene, Democratic nominee for Judge in this district, pave usa friendly call, last Friday. The Judge was, doubtless, looking after his chances for election. L. W. Felton, of Albany, the indefatiga ble newspaper correspondent nnd canvasser, gave us a pleasant call last Friday. He is doing good work for the Albany Herald, over in Orleans precinct. Our readers will be rejoiced to learn lhat Mr. H. C. Buckingham, of the Belknap set tlement, whom we mantionsd, re ently, as lying in an unconscious and hopeless condi tion, has rallied, and is now able to walk about his room, and strong hopes are enter tained of his partial recovery, at least. C. H. Whitney, formerly clerk and book keeper for a firm in this city, but now part ner in a store at McCoy, came up on the Saturday evening train and returned Mon day morning. "Charley" has a "hanker ing" after Corvallis. We would call the attention of onr rerders to the advertisement of the Alsea saw mills. Mr. Pitman has succeeded in removing and repairing his mills, under very adverse circumstances, but is now prepared to furnish a superior quality of lumber, at reduced prices. CARD OF THANKS- The congregation of the Episcopal Church desire to express their warm thanks, first of all to the kind friends who assisted in providing the refreshments for the company at the City Hall on Friday evening last and to those who gave so many articles for sale; to the Band, who so freely tendered their services; and to those who attended, and by their presence contributed to the great suc cess which was attained a sum of $160 was realized; and it is hoped that its expendi ture in fencing and beautifying the lots on which the church stands will add to the at tractiveness of the city. As it was found impossible to finish the progamme provided, it was arranged that a free entertainment should be given on this, Friday, evening in the City Hal , consisting of music, in glees, duets and songs, and readings and recitations, with Mr. Nash's narrative of travels in Norway, illustrated by water color drawings. GREENBACK CENTRAL COMMITTEE. At a called meeting by the chairman of the Greenback County Central Committee for the purpose of filling vacancies occasioned by the resignation of A. G. Mulkey and Na than Whealdon for Representatives, and Hon. John Burnett for Senator, the follow ing nominations were made, viz : Dr. J. R. Bayley for Senator, and C. B. Mays and J. H. We acknowledge re ceipt of a book entitled "The San Francisco Chronicle and it's History." It is a volume of sixty pages, printed on tinted paper and handsomely bound. It is the story of the foundation of the paper, its struggles of ear ly life, success, description of office, machin ery, etc., and comments of the press. Very readable indeed, and shows what enterprise and energy will do. , A CARD TO THE SINGERS We have been disappointed again. The necestary books, for our proposed, cantata, cannot now be obtained in timT R have the concert before the closed of the schools. Sincerely thanking onr many generous friends for their willingness to aid us, we ask them, and the interested public, to look forward to the early autumn, when, when with increased facilities and am ple time, we hope to furnish a rarer treat than we could have presented this spring. W, T. Chapman. GROUND BROKEN AT SILVERTON. Last Monday was an eventful day in the history of Silverton, Marion oountv. Oresron. It is a matter of general interest to know that active operations have commenced, and that the long-talked-of narrow gauge rail road projects of the Willamette val l-y, bid fair to be pushed to early completion. The following cheering intelligence is from the Salem States man of the 20i li inst. It meins new life for Salem, and Marion county. Every mile of railroad projected in the Willamette valley is an addition al plea for the improvement of Ya quina bay, and demonstrates the im portance of another ocean outlet : Yesterday was a gala day in the history of Silverton, it being the occasion of breaking ground for the narrow gauge railroad from there to the Willamette. At 10 A. M. Gov ernor and Mrs. W. W. Thayer, Hon. J. B. Montgomery, Ellis G. Hughes, and a repre sentative of the Oreg nian, arrived at Ger vais from Portland, and were conveyed to Silverton in a coach. The party was met on the road by a committee with a brass band, and escorted to the Silverton Hotel where dinner was served. The party then pro ceeded to the stand at the head of Water street, where about twelve hundred ladies and gentlemen had assembled. After an ad dress by the Hon. Ralph C. Geer. Mrs. Gov. Thayer turned the first shovelfull of ground, while the crowd gathered about her and cheered vociferously. Addresses wer-s then made by J. B. Montgomery, Gov. Thayer, R. S, Ramsby and others. Successful. The first " blast" of the Corvallis onndry, last week, was a perfect success, and very satisfactory to the propri etors, Messrs. Kitton A Belknap Bros. They find that the sand procured across the river is of very superior quality for their business, and the castings were unusually smooth and clean. The Corvallis Plow and Agricultural Implement manufactory is now in successful operation. Advertisement next week. Omitted. Our loca's failed to mention the visit of Geo. Woodward, adjusting agent of. the Phoenix insurance company, last week. We are always pleased to see the happy face and rotund form ot Mr. Woodward, but deplore the calamities that bring him to our midst. The fire that de stroyed the dwelling of Mrs. Locke was the occasion of his visit The loss was adjusted and she and her son received $1,200 for the same. That Racket. On Friday night last can nonading in the direction of Portland was plainly beard in this city, and suppositions as to the cause were wild, various and nu merous, but it turned out to be only a little rejoicing by Cartain Tom Mountain's battery at having $50 per month pay restored by the courts. Gazette : Hoping my entreaty for some space in your valuable journal will not meet a denial, I take the liberty to annoy you with a brief essay in behalf of onr "bet ter half. So much is said and written about woman's rights and vote, that it nec essarily must become attractive, more or less, to aU of us. ine opinion ot most of tne men is un doubtedly not in favor of yielding to them all the rights they are asking for. Women of the present day may not be exceedingly fit for the execution of all and every office in the country, and in some instances may not be acquainted well enough with the pub lic mind and popular government, to qualify them as voters ; yet I predict the time, not so far distant, when women will enjoy bet ter rights ; but, before this time will arrive, women must do a good deal 'of . mending and purifying among themselves. Especially in higher life women ought to come to the un . derstanding that accepting all the follies of modern fashion don't entitle them to bi termed "good society"; neither will it bring them a single step nearer to the so mucn longed for "vote." A painted doll never will he anything else but a painted doll just like a fellow who splits his hair in the middle of his cranium, always will be looked at as " an empty headed fop." The life of our present high society is nothing else but a false nature ; and as long as women in high life keep on deranging themselves through pride, pads, tijrt lac ing, etc., they never will gam thff"Tights they are expecting. Our tender sex is much inclined to become the plaything of men ; to avoid that, they have to become more self sustaining. Matrimony ought to be made the holiest of human relations ; and after suck a junction is made woman should form a part with the man. One of the greatest women America ever produced, Margaret Fuller, said : " It is a vulgar errror that love, a love, is to woman her whole existence. She is also bora for truth and love in their universal energy.'" In regard to voting, I must repeat an an swer a lady of this vicinity gave me, after I had expressed rays If as if women were not well enough acquainted with politics: "They should read a few less novels, and use as a literary substitute, good newspapers."
