Mr. Wilson Henderson, who has been in 1 1 J:; t T 4-1. I- iiuucimn Liiiiuiiioii lor hcvciui iiioiiLua othBb. t lieu on uesuay luurmiig iaai, ma uuiue, aboat three and one-half miles west of Cor vaUis. For six months preceding his death, Mr. Henderson had been suffering from a tumor of the abdomen, of gradually increas ing size, the exact nature of which was very obscure, though it had been examined by several of our resident physicians. Permis sion for a post mortem examination having been obtained, Drs. Lee, Bayley, Farra and Cauthorn, of CorvaUis, and Dr. Whitney, of Philomath, performed the same, and with the following results : A large sarcomatous tumor, commonly spoken of as a cancer. f had developed in the attachment of the intestines to the posterior waU of the abdo men. This was of considerable size, and in an advanced stage of disintegration. Conse cutively with this, smaller tumors, varying in size from a walnut to a hen's egg, had de veloped in the mesenteric glands, so as to make the intestines and their attachments or mesenteries appear almost as one large tumor. The right lobe of the liver was also very much enlarged and involved ; the whole surface being studded with sarcoma tous nodules. The kidneys and spleen were not affected. A smaller tumor of, no doubt, the same nature as the original one, had begun to manifest itself in the deep structures of the neck. The contents of the chest were not examined ; had they been, no doubt, from certain symptoms presented, the lungs would have been found to have been extensively invaded. The scene at the post-mortem proved conclusively that all had been done that could have been done, and that Nature had acted wisely in with drawing from the unequal contest. A CARD TO THE PUBLIC- Editor Gazette Dear Sir : In your item concerning the pastor and people of the M. E. Church, in this city, you give cur rency to certain idle rumors wh;ch are void of truth, but full of injustice. Immediately after our arrival here some one or more of our neighbors found time to concieve anf circulate a series of falsehoods and misleading insinuation, s to the effect that our temporal necessities were nearly or quite ignored by the officers and members of our charge. The slander soon reached our ears ; but, though somewhat annoyed by it, we tried to tieat 'it with the silent contempt which its very meanness deserved. But since our excellent Gazette has been betray ed into propagating the falsehood, even be yond the limits of the charge, it is time to speak. The facts are simply these : Our temporal wants liave been carefully anticipated and the wherewith to supply the same cheerfully furnished Since our appointment to thiB charge no proper kindness or attention has been withheld from us by our people. The officers of the church, finding themselves backed up by an unusually large appropria tion from the conference, are saved from un due anxiety, yet they have not relaxed their efforts nor neglected their duty. Let the skeptical call and examine our cash book. Let our gossiping neighbors ob serve the black preacher's "Eleventh com mandment," which was, "Let every one mind his own business." W. T. Chapman. CorvaUis, Feb. 22, 1880. Alsea Road Matters. Mr. G. H. Bye craft, of Alsea valley, was in the city this week, looking after the matter of getting county assistance to remove obstructions from the road leading from Huffman's mill to Alsea, which is at present impassable ex cept for footmen. We hope the county court will cheerfully appropriate the neces sary money to open it to travel, as it works a hardship upon the citizens of that valley to have their communication with the outside world cut off. Mr. Ryecraft is also energetically working to stir the people up in the matter cf building the twenty miles of road necessary to connect the Alsea valley with salt water. This road is greatly needed, and would be of much benefit to the people of that section, and .to the whole county. All who are interested in the progress and development of our county should lend a helping hand to this enter prise. From Independence. About twenty five young people came up from Independ ence last Monday evening to attend the Firemans' BaU. They expressed themselves satisfied with their trip, and we hope that they may come often, as much of the pleas ure of the party was due to their presence. Business on the W. O. R. R. is increasing A large assortment of fresh garden seeds at Kay at son s. The price of potatoes has not been affected by Mr. ParneU s visit to America. If yon want bargains in real estate, call on jyi. is. w oocicock. Mr. Thos, Baldwin, of Alsea Bay, was in town LuesUay, en route to The Dalles. Smoked halibut, boneless codfish and her ring at Ray & Son s. The City Market has been removed from its old stand to the next block opposite the Occidental Hotel. Choice fresh roasted and ground coffees at iay & Son a. The ball supper at the Occidental hotel last Monday evening was "taken in" by 140 persons. Mr. A. The Blue Ribbon Club will meet Satur day evening the 28th inst., in the Presby terian church, at 7 o'clock. An interesting meeting is auticipated- J. A. Hanna, President. W. B. Mose Neugass, of the firm of Jacobs & Neugass, left Thursday morning for San Francisco, where he will remain some three or four weeks purchasing a fine stock of goods for his firm. The enterprising grocery firm of John Ray & Son, have just received a new invoice of fresh groceries. Let the hungry public give them a trial and satisfy themselves of the correctness of our assertion. Dr. F. Cauthorn has just received a supply of fresh animal vaccine, from the Pennsyl vania vaccine farm, at Chambersburg. Now is the time to get vaccinated, as the small pox " boom" at the east is liable to reach Oregon at any time. To horsemen The Gazette job office is prepared to print horseographs and jacko- types for the campaign of 1880, on short notice and in good shape. Bills struck in cloudy weather. " Secure the shadow ere the substance fades." Pygall, Campbell & Co., have the exclu sive right to sell slabwood and will deliver the same to any part of the city, at $3 00 per cord. This firm also has for sale, a quantity of red fir 4 foot wood and will de liver same to any part of the city, at $4 00 per cord. Farmers, make preparations to save and dry your fruit next fall. It will pay you. Here is an illustration of what can be done in a small way : W. Morris, of Linn county, last fall used a Plummer dryer and made 160 clear of expenses. His two little girls, 9 and 1 1 years of age did aU the work. Rev. H. C. Jenkins, of the M. E. Church, has been conducting a series of revival meet ings in the school house, opposite this city in Linn county. More than twenty conver sions and a very general quickening of reli gious zeal throughout the community are among the visible results of the meetings. On and after March 10th, as our gentle manly and genial Postmaster wends his way to the Postoffice in the early dawn, the air will be filled with music. And this will be the burden of his song : "God bless the man that invented sleep." "But blast the man with curses long, and loud, and deep, that invented that artificial cut-off-early rising. In our walks about town, we notice very many bad holes in the sidewalks. When some unfortunate pedestrian shall fall throuh one of them, breaking a leg and our city is made to respond in a suit for damages, to the tune of five or ten thousand dollars, greater care will be given to repairing and keeping in order all our walks and crossings. Mr. G. Dyer, representing Messrs. S. C. Wells & Co., manufacturers of Shiloh's Con sumption Cure, and WeU's Persian Perfume Hackmetack, at Le Roy, New York, called last Saturday and contracted for an ad. in the Gazette. Messrs. Allen & Woodward were appointed agents for CorvaUis. The Pallace Gallery, branch of David son's, Portland, has just arrived in CorvaUis and located on the corner in front of the Occidental hotel. Mr. Davidson invites everybody in CorvaUis and Benton county to call in and see what kind of work he makes. As he sends all his negatives to the home gallery to be finished, he can safely guarantee satisfaction, and will only charge his Portland prices, viz : 3 a dozen for Cards, and $5 for Cabinet Photographs. He also makes all kinds of ferrotype pictures, from the little Gems. 36 for 50 cts., on up to the largest size. All those wanting Port land works, at Portland prices, should come early as the Palace will not remain long. Young America's Ball. The ball given by the Hose boys of Young America Engine Company, on the 23d inst., was a success in every respect. There were over seventy couple of dancers, and a large number of spectators present; the music was good and everything harmonious. The company will realize about $50 after paying expenses. The party was, in every respect, a decided suc cess. Protracted Meeting. The protracted meetings that have been held at the Evan ical church, for the last six weeks by W. C. Kantner, assisted by Rev's. Emery, Croasman and Bowersox, will close this evening Con siderable interest has been manifested and a number of accessions to the church were made. Close Call. The usual quiet of our den was disturbed last Wednesday by an un earthly noise in the rear of H odes' gun store. Glancing through a window we be held our friend Zeph. Job trying to hit the side of Blair's old warehouse with a young mountain howitzer. He tried several shots, but we beKeve the buUding came out of the trying ordeal unscathed. Although we were considerably to the left and rear of the marksman, we took the necessary steps to escape stray bullets. Zeph., shake I3T WASTED, The public all to know that a safe remedy has at last been discovered for the cure of diseases of the Kidneys and Bladder, made out of Oregon grown herbs. It is no less than the Oregon Kidney Tea. For sale by the druggists. Directions accompany each package. YAQUINA BAY ITEMS From Wm. Grant, who returned from the Bay last Sunday, we obtained the following items : The weather is still bad and the road ob structed in many places with fallen timber. The loging camps have been started for the Oneatte mills, and the mill will soon be manufacturing lumber. Mr. L. E. Davis is preparing to build a new steam ferry boat to run across the bay at Newport. The leap year ball at Oneatta was a deci. ded success. Mrs. Parker and Mrs P. M. Ab bey were floor managers: the supper' prepar ed by Mrs. Parker and her daughters, was excellent, and the music good. It seems that the letters of Mr. Hawley to the San Francisco Bulletin were not "love's labor lost," as there is now- a gentle man at the Yaquina who read one of them in Eastern Nevada, and immediately settled up his business for a year and started for Yaquina, and now says that he will settle there permanently. PRICE OF REAL ESTATE. Ed. Gazette: J am disposed to take issue with you as regards your views as to the price of real estate, expressed in an edito rial in your last issue. I think that if you will make a careful personal examination of the matter you will find that the prices asked for town lots either on the main, or the back streets, are not at all unreasonable. Without going into particulars at present, I request you to confer with Dr. Bayley, Mr. Woodcock and others and give your readers the result of your interviews. Your article was calculated to retard progress and keep intending purchasers away. Men who have moneg to invest in town property can be accommodated on reasonable and advan tageous terms. Give this matter a fair look ing into and you wiU find that I am right. As for people who come here expecting to buy business sites or whole blocks of home stead property for a few hundred dollars, I am afraid they will be disappointed. CITIZEN. A disordered liver is frequently caused by worry and trouble, overwork, the use of to bacco, intense study, hard drinking, immod erate eating, indolence, fast living, late hours, licentiousness, etc. , etc., and undoubt edly the best remedy is that standard medi cine, Emil Frese's Hamburg Tea taken as occasion requires either with or without medical advice. But unless you discontinue the evil that brought about your diseased liver, you have no right to look for more than tempoary relief from your troubles. Be warned ere it is too late, and try the medicine we recommend. Why Will You Allow a cold to advance in your system and thus encourage more serious maladies, such as Pneumonia, Hemorrhages and Lung troubles when an immediate relief can be so readily attained.
