A CARD TO THE (UdLl5 Editor Gazette : This country swarms With such numbers of felonious robbers of private character and virtue, that no honest or good citizen is safe; especially as these cowardly, base assassin, stab in the dark, without having the cotlrage to sign their names to their malevolent and false produc tions. A writer, who signs himself Plexus, Jr. i in the Benton Blade of the 3d inst., opens upon me a general tirade of abuse and personalities. Plexus, jf. knows he has no other means of wounding" my pride and feeling, than from some missile weapon, shot from some obscure corner where he thinks he will not be discovered, lie seeks, as all such defamatory writers do, to raise suspicion in the minds of the people. But I hope that my friends will be no longer deceived by artful, designing men, who, bankrupts in business, id fame, and in honor, mean nothing more than to involve others in the same common ruin with themselves. Hence, it is, that they are constantly aim ing their dark, and too often fatal weapons against those who stand forth as independ ent, fearless, conscientious men. Mr. alitor, in conclusion, let me state that I cannot take the time and space in your valuable paper to step aside from m v "mission" from the warning of the "still small voice," to notice those malicious per il rial attacks relative to myself, and the Greenback Party, but expect to keep right on in my accustomed course, neither turn ing to the right or to the left, as the man in the moon does when the little cur barks at him. W. A. Wells. CorvaUis, Oct. ft, 1879. FARMERS OF BENTON, ATTENTION. The attention of the farmers of Benton county is called to the Oregon and Washing ton Colony Land Company. Persons desir ing to sell lands will be glad to know that there is an immense company organized. With $100,000 capital for advertising pur poses. Its object is to enswer all reasonable inquiries of persons who contemplate com ing to Oregon or Washington Territory. This is done by giving full and complete descriptions of all farms offered for sale, with 'the price of the farm over the signa ture of the proprietor. These papers are kept for gratuitous distribution in their offi ces, in all the cities ot the United States, so that every man desirous of coming to Oregon or Washington Territory, can know just what kind of a farm, and at what price and locality he can get, before he starts. In this way many persons have bargains fully made before leaving the States, subject to the condition of finding everything; truly described. There is no cost attached to ad vertising, unless a sale is made ; in that event six dollars a year is charged for adver tising. This company has commissioned Messrs. Chenoweth 4 Johnson as their agents at this place. See advertisement in another column. On for Missouri. W. H. Johnson and wife gave ns a farewell call, yesterday. Mrs. Geo. R. Helm and son, of this city, intend spending the winter in California. Boots and Shoes, of almost any descrip tion, at M Stock A Co. 'a. The first snow of the season on Mary's peak, last Sunday night. Overcoats and Ulsters, for men and boys, at M. Stock & Co. 'a. Mr. Allen Parker has been appointed postmaster at Oneatta vice S. Case, resigned. Fall and winter styles just received, from New York, at Mrs. E. A. Knight's. " B. T. Harris and Prof. Sheak, Of Philo math, returned from Portland, Thursday. Nicholas, secretary. A very fine assortment of Ladies' and Children's Knit Jackets, Hoods and Nubias, at M. Stock & Co.'s A late San Francisco telegram announces that Gen. Grant would sail for Portland yesterday. An immense stock of Ladies' Cloaks, Dol mans, Ulsters and Circulars, very cheap, at M Stock & Co.'s We stood our trip to the Yaquina Bay very well, but it disappointed us in our in tended visit to the State Fair. Miss Amelia Stock, of this city, had some of the finest specimens of needle Work at the State Fair. Prof. Walker, editor Philomath Crucible, went to the Fair on Monday and returned by Tuesday's stage. We were surprised, last week, to find so many new buildings in progress at Philo math. Corvallis should look to her laurels. Grand opening at Mrs. J. H. Kelly's mil linery store, commences to-day. Our lady readers should make a note of this. Hon. M. Jacobs, Mayor of Corvallis, has received an invitation, inviting our citizens to participate in the Grant reception, at Portland. Mr. J. M. Sabin, of San Francisco, general agent of D. Ransom, Son & Co., whose ad. appears in the Gazette, gave us a call, last Wednesday. Thanks to Master Ralston Cox, for ffles of late Eastern papers. He intends opening a news depot, at the Vincent House, in a short time. Mrs. Sarepta Smith, M. D., will be at the Vincent House, in this city, on the 12th and 13th inst. Mrs. S. makes a specialty of female diseases. Consultation free. A Cauthorn & Son have on hand the Mor rison Bros, plows, the best in the market. For lightness and durability, they are un surpassed. All in arrears are cordially invited to call and settle. Senator Slater will return to Washington next month. He expects to leave his home, at La Grande, abont the 10th, and will take with him his wife and three youngest chil dren. Our Salem correspondent "Ned." writes up the State Fair for the Galette, in his usual racy style Another interesting let ter next week. To read these letters will be almost equal to a visit to the grounds, in person. Max Friendly has jnst received, in addi tion to his full stock of general merchandise, a large stock of watches and jewelry, gold and silver, which he is selling very readily, at Eastern prices. All goods strictly guar anteed as represented. A special committee of the State Agricul tural Society, after investigating the charges preferred against the managers and secreta ry, fully exonerate them. To say nothing of paying the principal, the interest on this huge in debtedness is terrible to contemplate, and the question as to Whether the debt will ever be paid becomes a serious one to con' aider. To calculate the interest on the entire in debtedness would be impossible, because we could not arrive at the average percentage paid, but the interest on the National debt runs up at the following rate : Per second ..... .3 17 " MhiulA . m ZA Hour, , 11,415 Off Dav 273,973 00 Year!'.'.'... . 100,000 000, 00 This is how labor is taxed to pay the in terest on our untaxed, unjust, unconstitu tional bonds, for the support of an idle, un taxed, privileged aristocracy. These bonds should be paid immediately and the mighty dram of interest stopped. They should be paid Off in legal tender lawful money at once and then no more bonds forever. The na' tion must be arrested in its rapid strides toward bankruptcy, or the Republic is lost. As the load becomes heavier labor becomes more oppressed, because it is labor that Itis to foot the bilL We say pay off the Na tional debt, cut dow a official salaries, stop the outrageous official extravagance that prevails throughout out land, tax capital the same as other property and provide the people with a sufficient circulating medium to transact the business of the country on a cash basis. ' Masquerade Ball. At a speeialnieet- mg of the Hook & Ladder Co., last Monday evening, it was voted to give a grand mas querade ball, for the benefit of the company during court week, in November. Keves. formerly of this county, but for the past year in East ern Oregon, after spending a couple of weeks, very pleasantly, in visiting relations and friends, returned to the Bunch grass country, last week He was accompanied en this visit by a cousin, Z. T. Keyes. Miss O. C. Keyes, a sister of J. W., returned with them. They go to Mitchell, in Wasco county. Hope they will all return to Ben Ion, ere long. Print Cigars. Why don't some enterprising capitalist erect about a dozen ? It would pay and, besides, accommodate a number of families desirous of availing themselves of our superior edu cational facilities. THE LOAD (JETTING HEAVIER. Mr. Editor : The public debt statement for the month of July, shows an increase in the public debt, during the month, of over six millions of dollars. So it has been go ing on under the present financial policy of the John Sherman ring, who control our public affairs. The load grows heavier -ei ery day, every hour, every minute; every second as time passes, and the road we travel now can only lead to national bankruptcy, and the downfall of our Republic. As an excuse for this monstrous increase in the public debt during July, Sherman says there was paid for arrears of pensions during the month $8,694,600. By turning to the finan cial statement mentioned it will be seen that he reports $282,605,273 as the amount of cash in tfietretuury, and yet to pay a few pension arrears he finds it necessary to plunge the natron over six millions dollars in debt; notwithstanding the fact he could have paid the pension arrears out of the idle capital locked up in the treasury, and still have held a reserve of many millions more than? there is any necessity of keeping. Perhaps, however, this $282,605,273 la not m the-treasury, but deposited with certain favorite, pet bankers who pay Sherman moderate rate of interest to use in buying more real estate at mortgage rates; (This is only a surmise of mine, founded upon inference. ) However, this may be, the in- famous outrage of increasing the interest- bearing debt at the rate of six" millions month, while a superabundance of cash reported in- the treasury most be apparent to every one. The man- who would borrow money to pay a thousand dollar debt when he had on-hand a hundred thousand dollars in cash that he had no use for would justly be considered a fool, and John Sherman, we may justly consider worse than- a fool knave. We ask, in the name of heaven how long the people will allow this work to go on? Remeentatives of various papers pub lished in Eastern Oregon met at the Union county fair last week and organized a press society, the object being to gain the various advantages of co-operation. Following are the officers : J. H. Shepherd, president ; E. S. McComas, vice-president ; f. H. Turn er, secretary ; W. J. Snod grass, treasurer ; Paul d'Heirry and S. U.
