every one w ould perceive that cleanliness
o f the skin is one of the con d ition s o f good

It happens w hen bath in g is
disregarded, that the lungs, k id n ey s or
bow els have m ore than their a pp oin tm en t
o f w ork. If these are strong and h ea lth y,
they m ay bear the tax w ith little apparent
in ju ry, but, in m ost cases, a low erin g of

Large bath tubs are pleasant and con v e n ­

On a certain day, on a Pennsylvania rail­
road, a belle of a thriving Pennsylvania
town, the daughter of a wealthy lumber
merchant, was traveling in the same car
with a shrewd old citizen oi lier native town
and an agreeable gentleman from the West
who tells the story.
The latter had been talking to the belle,
but as the night drew on and the young lady
grew drowsy, he gave up his seat to her and
placed himseli beside the seme what cynical
Pennsylvanian. The latter began the con­
versation by pointing to a high mountain
past which they were whirling, and said :
“ You see that moutaiu? Six or eight years
ago it was covered with as fine a forest as ev­
er grew, and was worth §10,000 and upward.
Now without a tree and covered with stumps,
the laud is scarcely worth a continental.
The net produce of that mountain lies over
there in that seat,” and he pointed to the re­
cumbent belle; “ that is my calculation. It
has just absorbed all of that lumber, which
. her father owned, to raise and educate, pay
for her clothes and jewelry, bring her out
in society, and maintain her there. Some
o f you young men, if you were given your
choice between the mountain yonder, as it
now stands, and the net produce on that
seat, would take the net produce, butas for
me, give me the stumps.”
C areless E nglish .—A lady and gentle­
man were crossing our meadow one cloudy
day, when suddenly it began to rain.
“ Won’t you he kind enough to hoist my
umbrella?” said the lady.
“ Certainly,” said the gentleman.
I was astoni shed at this, for it “ went”
means anything at all it means will not;
and therefore, according to my translation,
the gentleman had really told the lady that
certainly he would not be kind enough to
hoist her umbrella!
But no. Even while he spoke he opened
that useful article and held it gracefully over
Jiis companion.
“ Thank you,” said she, earnestly.
“ Not at all,” said he, still more earnestly.
And on they went.
“ Why, the fellow flatly contradicted the
lady,” said I to myself, “ How outrageous.”
But po, again, for they were on the best
of terms, and the lady smiled sweetly at his
words.
Yet the birds tell me that this sort of talk
is quite usual among genteel human beings.

ty in the use of ‘lie’ and ‘lay.’ In families
whose hens ‘set,’ every thing ‘lays’ and all
‘lay abed.’ The quoted words 'are wrong.
Lay means to place, and requires an objec­
tive, as, ‘ the hen lays eggs.” ‘Now I lay
m e.’ “W e should say the book lies on the
table; he lies abed; lies low, everybody lies,
if you please, but nobody lays unless lie has
something to lay.
