eleventh volume. It is just a plain
everyday kind of a paper published with
out any bluster, just to give the local
and general news in a readable manner.
Every once in awhile some one says they

have gotten to be like department stories,
big, bulky affairs full of yellow journal
ism, who want to fill the whole field.

we do manage to get a pretty liberal pat

gift of $330,000 of the people's money to

He again voted against the recognition
of Cuba, and also against taking action
on the disaster of the Maine. (See Cong.
Record, page 4196.)
On April 31, 1893, be voted to seat a
gold democrat as a representative,- and
attempted to turn out of his seat the
regular democrat who was elected by a
clear majority. The scheme failed be
cause a large number oi repuoucans
would not allow such injustice to be
done. (See Cong. Record, page 4578.)
On Aprils, 1898, he voted to allow
railroad companies in the Indian Terri
tory, to merge, and to lease other lines,
tons giving the railroad companies in
that section an opportunity to increase
and water their capital stock and add to
the burdens of those who are compelled
to use the railroads in marketing their
agricultural products.
In fact, the record of this representa
tive is unequaled by any in the United
States, and the state of Oregon must do
her duty on election day to prevent his
return to the 56th congress, if the inter
ests of the people would be protected.

We hear much of the Pilgrim Fathers,
and it is right thst we should honor their
memories. It is true they csme to inhos
pitable shores and made a nation in the
face of wbat seem almost insurmounta
ble difficulties, yet did they exceed the
pioneers who opened this beautiful val
ley to civilisation? The Pilgrims fled
from oppreseion and danger to life and
property, to seek freedom nd opportun
ity for growth
The pioneers left a fertile country .good ,
climate, peaceful and untroubled sur
roundings and hosts of friends to brave
tbe dangers and hardships ot tbe plains
and ot life in a new bostilo land.
This article is intended to give a por
tion of the honor due to one of that noble
b and.
Mrs. Sarah M. Hogne, relict of James
P. Uogue, died in this city February 1st
1898. She was s nsti ve of Kentucky, the
daughter of James Finney, and was born
near Flemingsburg. April 19th, 1810.
Her father was a Covenanter of Scotch
Irish descent. He was a farmer, and as
bs wss opposed to slavery moved from
Kentucky to s fsrm near Princeton. In

slsrn the lessons of life in a free state.
Sarah M. Finney was married tolsmes
P. Uogue in 1829, snd sfter their msr
risge they msds their home in Princeton,
in.liana, until l&Jo, wben they moved to
the present site of Monmootb. Illinois.
Tbe town was then little more than a
poetotfiee and it was -necessary to plow

burned. Mr. Hogue bought land for a

home until 1844. when they again re
moved this time to a farm near McComb,

In 1871 the father was called Irom his

whataeemed the prime of his life. The
writer ot this met him for the only time

active lils. It proved otherwise.
Upon Mrs. Uogue now fell tbs care ot
tbo farm and ot several motherless
grandchildren, these duties were per
formed as her whole bie bsd been, witn
unselfish devotion and her memory will
always be cherished by her relativee and
friends ss of 00s who slwsys snd uncom
promisingly stood for the right, snd as
one wbo trove to do her whole duty.
She was assisted by ber youngest son
Chas. P. Uogue, who administered his
father's eat ate snd ntsnaged ths farm till
it was tented in 1874.
Mrs. Hogue then came to Albany, and
built a borne In which shs resided till her
death. During the later years of ber life
sbe wss constant! with the family of her
daughter Mr. Ida Irving and passed
sway surrounded by those whom she
loved.
