W. N Thomas, a rancher on Rock Creek, above Mehama, appears to be in a little trouble with his neighbors and has been warned to leave the country, by a vigilance commit tee. Mr Thomas is charged in the notice served on him, with threatening the lives of some of the best men in the commun ity ; that he tried to disgrace every woman in the same place, even his own sister ; that he poisoned stock, broke open houses and perpetrated other offenses for which he should have been punished. The penal por tion of the notice provides for a necktie festival after ten days. Thirty days having elapsed since the date of the notice leads Mr Thomas to believe that the "vigilance committee" was simply a hoax, and he still remains on his own illihe. In replying to the notiee Mr. Thomas simply denies that any stock was ever poisoned in his neighborhood, or that he ever broke into any house other than his own. He prob ably knows the temper of his neighbors well enough to know whether or not to be more circumspect in his conduct, if the al leged charges are true. Vidette. Children Cry for HOW MUCH PROTECTION Dr. Watts snoke ta a slim crowd at the Court House lait week. He advanced! nothing new on the tariff except this : He v. Raid republicans favored a tariff schedule so arranged that the duty imposed upon mported goods should he just high enough to equal the difference between the cost of labor In this country and in Europe. The Dr. is very much in error In stating the po sition of his party. I ic states the democrat ic position exactly. Let us put tbe matter to a test: Democrats want a reduction of the tariff of y per cent on woo'en goods. Republicans oppose, lly reference to the First Annual Report of the Commissioner of Labor for tS86, page 124, we find that the labor cost of making a pair of blankets in New Jersey, weight 5 pounds, was 14 rer cent of the entire cost of the blankets, or 35 cents. The duty under our present law on apalrof blankets just like the above named would be 70 per cent or $1.70. In other words, the duty imposed upon this pair of blankets is more than five times the entire amount paid for labor in inakinir them. Again, referring to the same document.page 10a. The labor cost of mining a ton of bi tuminous coal In Ohio is 47 cents, and the tariff duty upon the same kind is 75 cents per ton. The duty being more than the entire labor cost of mining the co"l. Again, page 122, same authority shows that in Pennsylvania the labor cost of making one yard of casslmere, weighing 16 ounces.was 23 cents, while the duty upon the same is 89 cents. So that It Is plain to be seen that our present tariff laws give five times as much protection as Dr. Watts says his par ty asks for. The democratic party would gladly give all the protection which the Dr. says his party favors, and would then add 10 per cent to it and be more than satisfied. It is now announced upon what seems to be good authority that the rcpub lean members of the ways and means commit tee have decided that they cannot play the l. The bill, it Is said, has been agreed toby all the repub lican members of the committee, except Judge Kelley. It proposes a reduction of half the duty on sugar, a repeal of all the taxes on tobacco, and upon alcohol used in the art. and the adoption of a wool schedule atri crd upon by the wool convention. It claimed the total reduction of revenue 1 ..a ... aa a . AS Mt effected by this bill will be not far from $65,000,000. The significant thing about the proposed bill is that the republicans have decided that they cannot go to the I country In the coming presidential contest on a record of opposition to all reduction of taxation w bile the surplus in the trcas jry is steadily mounting up. The democratic politicians who have been reported ta be opposed to Mr. Cleve land have cc:t .-d to exist so far as appear ances are concerned. They have probably gone with tha states that our republican friends announced would never endorse the president.
